RANGER is large, but so are its work load and its mission. RANGER is new, hut she has become a good ship, her crew are ordinary men who perform extraordinarily. Because of them, RANGER has become not only the biggest ship in the Pacific Fleet, but one of the finest ships. A new seapower has come to the Pacific

CAPTAIN PAUL D BUIE A native of Nashville, Georgia, Captain Paul D. BUIE attended the University of Georgia and from there received his appointment to the Naval Academy, from Where he was graduated in 1933. After serving aboard the battleship COLORADO, he entered flight training at Pensacola, Florida where he was designated a naval aviator in 1936. After serving with squadrons aboard various ships including the old RANGER QCV-4j, Captain BUIE in 1942 organized and commanded FIGHTING SIXTEEN attached to the USS LEXINGTON, which squadron was credited with shooting down 150 Japanese planes while onder his command. Following World War II, Captain BUIE served with various ships, stations and staffs. Prior to assuming command of RANGER on 5 March 1958, Captain BUIE served on the Staff of Commander Naval Air Force, Atlantic Fleet. Among other awards, Captain BUIE wears the Navy Cross, the Silver, Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two gold stars, the Air Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation l
