RANGER, most poweiful and most modern of all aircraft carriers, had joined the Pacijic Fleet. This book records her journey to the Far East, and her duty in the United States Seventh Fleet-the most important warship there since Commodore Perry opened the door to japan. In this book you will see what RANGER is, what she does, and how her people work and live. Many readers will have an especial interest in a son, a husband, a father whose Navy life they will join and better understand through these pages. We hope that you who read this book will see how RANGER and her sisters use the water runways of the world to project American air and sea power abroad in the service of peace and freedom. And we hope you will share the life and high purpose that animates every man aboard. Noel Gayler F fm.- x 1 im. VV f , ? ef I - ' ' K . M, R V .4-v' , . -1' V V' .,V....e ,V 15 VSV ,Q-kwa, . mln- . The city receives much of its foodstuffs from the communist mainland, yet seems to thrive under the constant threat of invasion. Americans, British, turbaned Indians, japanese, Chinese, German and Scandinavian merchants and ships continue to take advantage of the duty-free port for trading.
