LEGION ESSAY THE RIGHTS WE DEFEND Some day rn hr tory class your teacher mrght ask you What are the rrghts and lrbertres we defend? lt would probably take you a moment or two o thrnk out the answer On the frrst frnger one would probably grve the rght for men and women to vote on the second freedom of relrgron on the thrrd freedom of speech the fourth freedom of the press and on thc- last prohrbrtron of slavery But I belreve our rrghts and lrbertres ex end way beyond frve frngers A government by the people has been left out You ask I-low rs the government of the people a rrght whrch we defend? Do you realrze that rf we drd not have a people s government we would not have any rrghts to defend? Our country would be a totalrtarran ruled by one man and hrs party Democracy would be wrped out and everythrng for whrch we have fought would be vanrshed Today we hardly realrze what democratrc freedom rs It can be sard that rt does not mean that every person rs a law unto hrmself or that he can determrne for hrmself what he shall be free to do It means rather that above all thrngs else we cherrsh and arc. prepared to defend the rrght of free men to determrn for thmserselves the central and drrectrng values of thrr socrty and to ma tho e rules whrch shall grve the rrght of way to the thrngs whrch hey have collectrvely chosen as good We have many crvrl lrbertres whrch we Amerrcans do not realrze exrst untrl they are taken away For rnstance we have freedom of relrgron We are able to attend a church of one s chorce and worshrp rn our own way We have freedom of speech and press In 1734 Peter Zenger a newspaper publrsher was arrested and trred rn New Yo k for crrtrcrsm of hrs government Hrs acqurttal marked the freedom of the press Thrs was the rrst trme rn hrstory thrs law was used I belreve that thrs rs one of the most rmportant rrghts whrch we exercrse today But what would happen rf we drd not have rt We would be unable to talk about our government Newspapers would not be able to prrnt about rt the way they see 'rt If we drd not have thrs rrght we would not have a government by the people Drd you know that the rrght for people to assemble and drscuss vrews rs an rmportant lrberty? We really do not realrze how thrs lrttle lrberty affects us A law of searchrng one s home wrthout a warrant has been rn practrce for a long trme Every day we wrll be coves the central and drrectrng values of therr socrety and to make defend them now' There are several countrres rn Europe and Asra who would lrke to take them away You have heard the phrase a person rs mnocent untrl he rs proven gurlty Drd you ever stop to thrnk why thrs rs true? If rt wasnt an mnocent person mrght be trred for a crrme he drdnt commrt In 1862 Abraham Lrncoln one of our greatest presr dents gave hrs Emancrpatron Proclamatron whrch freed all slaves Everyone today rs protected by thrs proclamatron except as a punrshment for crrme after due con Jrctron Many of us never stop to take rnto consrderatron our economrc rrghts we buy and s ll our food any trme and anywhere we wrsh But rf we were a communrstrc country we would have to work where and whatever the government drrected us We would buy whateevr the government permrts to be sold The government frxes and tells how much each famrly can consume Among these economrc rrghts whrch we contrrve today are The rrght for a person to have hrs own chorce of occupatron to sell products of hrs work to acqurre and own property and the rrght to work and earn one s lrvrng lf your teacher were to ask you What are the drfferent krnds of communrcatron? you would probably grve radro tele graph and telephone In a totalrtarran country these systems are all operated and watched by the government Newspapers and book publrshers are allowed only to prrnt what the government permrts the government keeps Control of publrc oprnron by allowrng no agencres to brrng you news or oprnron Educatron rs taken over by the communrsts Chrldren are taught to frght for the rrght of the state It rs hardly possrble to belreve that a young chrld would betray hrs parents rf rt were for the good of the state In the magazrne Is Thrs Com munrsm? a young chrld told the proper authorrtres where to frnd a hrdden radro set that hrs father had been usrng for antr communrst actrvrtres The father and mother were krlled on srght because of rt Do you want our natron lrke thrs? You may wonder how we got these rrghts whrch protect us today The Constrtutron rs devoted chrefly to settrng up the organrzatron of our government lt was formed for the purpose of perpetuatrng Amerrcan Lrberty by unrtrng the states rnto a frrm unron The states wanted unron but yet they were so realous of each other they almost lost rt I would lrke to quote a passage from an address grven November 29 1937 under the Masonrc ausprces rn Baltrmore Maryland Referrrng to the people rt sard What drd the people want? They wanted unron but not a unron that destroyed the states They wanted yustrce but not ,ustrce rnterpreted by drstant courts beyond the seas They wanted domestrc tranqurllrty but not the herded submrssron of slaves cowerrng under a drctator s lash They wanted defense agarnst forergn aggressron but not by an army that would over turn and eat up therr substance They wanted a government that would promote the general welfare but not a government that would encroach upon therr rrghts under the pretense of promoting therr welfare They wanted lrberty not for a day or year but for all trme and to thrs end they wanted a government that would be therr servant and not therr master The people were not dorng wrong rn askrng for thrs lt was a chance they had to take rf they drdnt want freedom lost So on the day lune 21 1788 a constrtutron was brought up The preamble began lrke thrs We the People of the Unrted States rn order to form a more perfect unron For what purpose? To make our Irbertles secure? For how long? As long as humanrty wanders through the wrlderness of trme For whom? For every man woman and chrld under the Stars and Strrpes Establrsh rustrce What rs rustrce but a guararan of lrberty? Insure domestrc tranqurllrty The people longed for unrty Provrde for the com mon defense Drvrded the states practrcally rnvrted rnvasron Promote the general welfare and secure the blessrngs of lrb erty to ourselves and our posterrty do ordarn and establrsh thrs Constrtutron for the Unrted States of Amerrca Thrs IS for what they had fought and thrs was what they wanted us to have It rs thrs for what we are contrnually frghtrng for today It IS almost as though the Constrtutron were talkrng to the people sayrng You are free and safe Worshrp your God rn your own way Speak the truth and be unafrard Gather wrth your nerghbors and boldly protest rf you are wronged No offrcer wrth out a warrant shall rummage through your home and steal your papers or property You shall not be krdnapped by law offrcers and be kept rn secret YOU are a crtrzen of the Unrted States as well as a crtrzen of the state and every state wrll grve you equal protectron of the laws Many of us do not use these laws correctly We mrsuse them and then expect to u e them rn return We drscrrmrnate agarnst other people who are not of the same color as we Because they are Catholrc Iewrsh or Protestant we belreve they are not as good as we are We even keep them out of our actrvrtres But why should we? We are Amerrcans and they are Amerrcans' They have the same rrghts we do They even apprecrate them more because some of them know what rt rs to be wrthout them Thrs rs not fo one rndrvrdual to do We must all help and frght to keep our natron unrted and peaceful lust because your nerghbor drscrrmrnates agarnst a Negro down the street rs no srgn that you should not do somethrng about rt It rs your rraht and prrvrlege But you cant take thrs lyrng down For rf you do the work of our forefathers wrll be rn varn Today we are a natron safe and secure What wrll we be tomorrow? We are a country rndustrralrzed and mrghty can we remarn thrs way? Somewhere rn our Unrted States the Brll of Rrghts rs vrolated every day Our most dangerous enemy rs you who have these rrghts but deny them to other people If we Amerrcans keep them safe then nothrng can tear them apart Freedom means choosrng and rt rs the only freedom we can ever get Freedom rs not somethrng to be read about rn books or talked about on the radro or rn speeches It rs somethrng real and rn the heart It must be practrced where busy men and women work to lrve If rt rs to persrst rt must be so used as to contrrbute to the satrsfactron of reasonable human needs Harry Emerson Fosdrck sard Lrberty rs danger ous but rt rs the safest thrng we have Is thrs not true? We are at the pornt where we have to decrae It rs our responsrbrlrty to make our freedom work even better for the common welfare MES 49 I 0 , . r '4 , . , . . .
