Today, the streets of Rancho Santa Fe are busier, bustling with a population
of 3, 300. The Dieguenos Indians would marvel at our fast skateboards and
our enthusiastic basketball games coached by Mr. Schechter and Mr. Engelman
Certain feelings of kindred spirit, however, link us with the people of the past.
Visiting over a coke at the pharmacy, riding our horses along the trails, we
enjoy the beauty of nature that our town works to preserve.

In the year 1776, the Dieguenos Indians were living in what is now our town,
Rancho Santa Fe. Missions were being founded by the Spanish who were ardent
with desire to christianize the Indians. In 1835, the Osuna family came and
later in 1906, the Santa Fe Railroad bought what had come to be called the
San Dieguito Big Ranch. Now, two hundred years later in the year 1976, the
"Ranch" with its Spanish architecture maintains intimate ties with its romantic
past.
