Through effort and caution, the journey though difficult, 12 without regrets, at the road you have traveled Dedication and hard work are necessary qualities for anyone interested in producing a yearbook. For a few years, the Ram’s Horn was advised by someone who possessed these qualities and. as a result, captured the students' memories by creating yearbooks which conveyed the students’ spirit, pride, and honor for their school. Though she no longer sponsors the yearbook. she is always willing to assist the staff in any way possible and answer any of their questions. The Ram’s Horn Staff would like to say thank you by dedicating the 1984 Ram’s Horn to . IT WAS A TIME WHEN YOU COULD REALLY BEGIN TO CONFRONT LIFE’S DIFFICULT DECISIONS. FACE YOUR FUTURE. AND REMEMBER YOUR PAST. REMEMBER THE LAST DAY OF YOUR JUNIOR YEAR? THE SHOUTS OF CLASS OF ’84. TM A SENIOR NOWAND ONE MORE YEAR RANG OUT THROUGH THE ENTIRE SCHOOL. AND THEN ... AUGUST 24, 1983, THE LONG-AWAITED ARRIVAL OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR FINALLY CAME AROUND. IN ONE WEEK YOU TRIED TO CRAM YEARS AND YEARS OF STUDY INTO YOUR BRAIN IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE A DECENT SCORE ON YOUR A.C.T.. AND IN THE END. DECIDED YOUR CRAMMING HAD PAID OFF. COLLEGE WAS THE FOREMOST THING IN YOUR MIND. WOULD YOU GO? WHICH UNIVERSITY WOULD YOU ATTEND? YOU FINALLY DECIDED TO LET FATE TAKE ITS COURSE. RATHER THAN WORRY YOURSELF SICK OVER IT. THE ENTIRE YEAR WAS FACED WITH ANTICIPATION AND SUSPENSE. SCHOLARSHIPS WERE GRANTED. AND THE SCHOLARS WERE HONORED. REMEMBER PROM DAY? GIRLS CAME TO SCHOOL WITH ROLLERS IN THEIR HAIR. AND GUYS DIDN’T SHOW UP AT ALL. A SPECIAL VITALITY AND SPIRIT FILLED THE ENTIRE SCHOOL. THAT EVENING YOU WERE READY TO GO. AND WAITED FOR YOUR DATE TO ARRIVE. HE SHE LOOKED MARVELOUS, AND YOU WERE OVERJOYED. AFTER YOUR PARENTS INSISTED ON MAKING 10 OR 12 PICTURES (IT SEEMED LIKE 40 OR 50) YOU WERE FREE TO LEAVE FOR THE DANCE. WHEN YOU ARRIVED. YOU WERE ASTOUNDED AT THE SIGHT OF THE BEAUTIFUL DECORATIONS. EVERYONE LOOKED STUNNING (YOU. THE BEST. OF COURSE) AND DREAMY-EYED. THE EVENING WAS PERFECT, JUST AS YOU HAD IMAGINED IT. LAST. BUT NOT LEAST. WAS GRADUATION. YOU HAD BUTTERFLIES. AND A NERVOUS SMILE. AS YOU WALKED DOWN THE AISLE. YOU COULDN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THE BEAMING PARENTS ALL AROUND YOU. AND THEN CAME THE APPLAUSE AS YOUR NAME WAS CALLED. I’M FREE YOU THOUGHT. BUT THEN CAME THE REALIZATION THAT YOU WEREN’T FREE AT ALL. JUST EMBARKING UPON A NEW PHASE IN YOUR LIFE. Contri FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK The 1983 84 school year has been packed with excitement for our school family. New students, staff members, and a wealth of activities will long be remembered by all. SGA activities, athletic events, scholastic competitions, assembly programs, the International Fair, May Day, and the Junior Senior Prom are but a few that stand out in my mind. Each person who is a part of our school family adds something to our total program. For me, 198384 has been a rewarding school year, and I am grateful to each of you for your contribution. I am proud to say that Ramsay is the best high school thanks to the young men and women who help to make it that way. Derrick Cooper. Ramsay’s senior guard-forward can play basketball. It was quite apparent to anyone who saw Cooper lead Ramsay to a 57-36 win over John Carroll Saturday evening at Birmingham Southern College. “He may be the mobt complete player in (Jefferson) County, Carroll Coach David Kilcoyne said. “He’s shoots well from the outside, penetrates well and he's certainly under control on the floor Cooper's versatility is perhaps the key to his effectiveness for the Rams. Last year, at 6-foot-l, b$ was the point guard. His job was to run the offense. Now a year older, he's grown an inch and is much stronger. Consequently. Cooper has been moved to forward as the team lost a lot of its strength from last season 1 like it, said Cooper, who said Texas and Iowa have shown the most interest in him “Hus is making me a more complete player. It allows me to help the team by rebounding and not just scoring. Now I shoot the ball from the baseline and not just out front Cooper scored 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out six assists Saturday. First-year BSC Coach Joe Dean, who previously was an assistant at the University of Kentucky, couldn't help but be impressed 1 got to know him at our basketball camp in Kentucky last summer, so 1 already knew Derrick Cooper was a super player. Dean said. “He’s a winner. and he plays all areas of the game extremely well. 'He’s definitely a major-college player, but if he wants to. he can play at Birmingham-Southern College. Cooper scored 14 points in the first half, as the Rams (9-8) held a 26-19 lead at intermission. Only the outside shooting of John Hartman and Richard Bailey kept the Cavs in the game. They just couldn't penetrate the larger and quicker Ram delense And the Rams bolted out of the locker room in the second half, connecting on four of their first five shots to take a 36-24 lead Hartman, who scored 13 points, and Bailey, who liad 14. scored all seven of the John Carroll points in Uie third quarter. Ramsay forward Jeff Toney (12 points) fired in two 20-foolers, and guard Charlie Abrams scored four of his 13 second-half points. Then Cooper swished an 18-footer from the wing, and it was 40-26 at the end of the third quarter. “We’.ve been inconsisent,” Cooper said “But we were ready tonight because John Carroll is right around the comer from us, so they are our big rival.’’ Romwy 83, Banka 51 Jeff Toney scored 20 points and Derrick Cooper 18 as the 14th victory against 11 losses. tains High school basketball KAM.SAV SCH Kill 11. Thuftdoy, Oclob«r 20, 1983 —Volley girls in volleyball By Solomon Crenshaw Jr. News sports writer Becky Green’s eyes bl like those of a child who had received what she wanted for Christmas The volleyball fell from near the ceiling in the Ramsay High School gymnasium to the perfect spot for her to pound it down the left sideline and give the home team a 15-14 lead. Moments later, when JacksonObn's Donnetu Davis was called for touching the net, the Rams had won the city tournament title. 15 1,12-15,16-14. Afterward, Ramsay Coach Rose Fiorella was happy with the win, but quick to notice that her team was making a costly mistake. They (Ramsay) weren't moving and weren't covering the positions for the type ball JO was playing. They were hitting a lot of dink type of ball, bumping it up and dinking (Upping) it over. Ramsay got off to a fast start when Jube Myers served the Rams to a 6-0 lead in the first game and her spike gave the home team a 10-1 lead en route to a 15-1 win We played belter in the first game, said Myers. We weren't aware that JacksonObn could come back so much. But come back they did. JacksonObn, which has only sue players on its team, trailed, 12 11. in the second game when the JO charge began. Amanda Hudson tied the score with a dink shot and Roberta Sheffield scored with three straight serves to give them the second game, 15-12. The momentum they found in the second game Tan over into the third game as JacksonObn held leads of 8-3 and KM. But the Rams, responding to a large number of students who stayed after school to see the end of the meet, came back with some fireworks of their own. Catnna Glasco scored on a spike, Green on a shallow serve and Myers on another spike to draw U) the Suuthside team to within three at 10-7. After a JO timeout. Marilyn Jones scored on two consecutive spikes to cut the Mustang lead to 10-9. . The game was lied two more times, at 11-11 and ' 14-14. to set up Green's spike and Jones' winning serve I Jodu Childress was the leading scorer for Ram-‘ say with eight points and Jadue Brown led JO with 7. ■ Green was named most valuable player of the tournament Other members of the ail-tournament ! team were West kind's Catherine Bogus, Angela • Pruitt. Joan191 The Road Not Taken Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry 1 could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh! I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference.
