Sue Giovanni Secretary Arletha Durr Science Alan Goldstein Social Studies Chris Lafakis Fine Arts Sandra Moore Mathematics Excellence Jack Mann Director EXCELLENCE is an innovative program designed to challenge gifted and talented Birmingham high school students and to increase their awareness of an involvement with the community. Students in EXCELLENCE come from the fourteen Birmingham high schools for six weeks. Fifty students are selected for each session based on intelligence, reading scores, teacher and counselor recommendations, leadership potential, and students interest. Students in EXCELLENCE, at Ramsay Alternative High, maintain regular academic development through a flexibly scheduled curriculum designed to facilitate the students' individual program of research and community interaction. EXCELLENCE utilizes resources in the community such as city government buildings, industrial centers, libraries, university facilities, laboratories, museums, and other facilities. 21
