vol. 43 Ramsay Alternative High School Birmingham, Alabama Editor: Ross Howard Assoc. Editor: Pam Boyd Advisor Mrs. Marian Rogers An Introduction to Change: In August of 1976. a change occurred involving the Birmingham school system which greatly affected the destinies of the students of Ramsay High School. Until that time the word •‘alternative had no significance in our educational system. Through the changes facilitated by our school superintendent. Dr. WilmerCody. and the members of the board of the Birmingham Public School System, the word alternative took a new dimension, a dimension of change. The formation of Ramsay Alternative High School as a secondary educational establishment, encompassing 3 variety of programs to meet the needs of its students, is a milestone in the history of Alabama Education. 4 6 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE In recent weeks I have had the opportunity to review the literature which was prepared to inform you and the public of the trimester plan for Ramsay Alternative High School. It is a pleasure to report that from an administrator's observation the trimester plan has passed the test and is proving to be a tremendous success. Most, if not all, students and teachers are delighted with what the plan has been able to provide by way of enrichment for all students: more course offerings, increased holding power of the school, and improved attitude toward learning. Teacher-student relations have improved to the point where very few cases of disciplinary action are referred to the advisor's office. Attendance is belter, there are fewer tardies, and there is an increase in the number of students taking more and varied courses. As we approach the spring holidays, I can venture a very optimistic projection of increased enrollment for the coming year with a freshman 8 9 Homecoming — A T radition 10 Queen — Sharon Fair Court — Phyllis Pierce MaryYeatman Unchanged. . . 11 13 14 Miss Ramsay Angela Hooks Old traditions even as new through the I st Alternate Lenora Ramsey Mr. Ramsay Ben McGhee hold steadfast changes filter school. The Accelerated Studies or the Enrichment Program is for students with the urge for a challenge. Classes in this program are for students with an average or above educational level who wish to get more from their studies. Their electives are chosen on the basis of their interests. The Personalized Studies Program is for students with a history of low achievement and or poor school adjustment. This is a highly individualized program with emphasis on reading and math. There is also the Creative and Performing Arts program which offers classes in Drama, Creative Writing, Music and Visual Arts. This program is for students Interested or show talent in these areas. Although it may seem like a harshly divided set up. it is not. It is not meant to categorize students. but it offers each and every student rich opportunities and a challenging environment. Many changes occur throughout a lifetime. Let's just hope that our generation has as much concern for the educational system as the adults do today. Through the years freshmen of 1976-77 will bring changes just as other students have, but our freshmen are going through one of those changes now. As many know. Ramsay Alternative High School has opened many new pathways for our old and new students alike. Entering into the Alternative School is not quite as simple as it used to be. To enter into Ramsay as a freshman one must submit an application. After the application is received by school officials, students are screened on the basis of test scores and records. If two students arc equally qualified for the program, then acceptance is given to the one who applied first. Upon entering Ramsay, the students are grouped into four main categories: General Studies. Accelerated Studies. Personalized Studies and the Creative and Performing Arts. General Studies Is for students on an average educational level. These students are offered basic classes with the freedom to choose clec- 39 Witherspoon. Yvas Yarboro. It brings feelings of joy and contentment to all that arc a part of it. Then one day change comes to visit here. long needed yet many times avoided. Suddenly age old traditions are abandoned. New ones must be formed. An aura of sorrow prevails: as it seems to many this great place is dying. But as time passes it is realized that change too is 3n institution and is as old and true as time itself. And the sorrow is washed away As the new day is dawning the institution still stands, stronger than the day before.
