RAM’S HORN 1965 EDUCATION is a great monument; without it, the past would be lost, the present stagnated, and the future obliterated. Erskine Ramsay High School Birmingham, Alabama I 40 Teachers 898 Students Table of Contents Administration and Faculty 16 7} There is a loftier ambition than merely to stand high in the world. It is to stoop down and lift mankind a little higher. Henry Van Pyke. educator 1852-1933 Seniors and Underclassmen 26 7 The past cannot be changed, the future is still in your power. ” Hugh White Activities 72 TV Activity is the only road to knowledge. George Bernard Shaw £ Organizations 94 7 The noblest question in the world is What good may I do in it? ' Benjamin Franklin f Sports 118 Faster, Higher. Stronger Olympic Slogan Patrons 149 7? No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. Thomas Jefferson 2 Portrayed In this, the 1965 RAM'S HORN, is the life of Rams3y High School. The experience must be personal, must be wrapped up in the you and the me. The specific scenes and faces and events are only representative of scenes, faces and events that you or I might remember; the expressions and experiences have only a personal meaning . . . your meaning or my meaning. A high school is a small world of students whose lives center about the building: a world within a world. We live it ... we love it. Enveloped within it is a world of memories . . . disappointments and failures . . . moments of achievement . . . the search, the questions ... the knowledge, the answers. It is fitted with countless daily occurrences. It is a world in which sorrow and success can follow each other in the space of an hour--from lingering doubt, following a tough test--to anticipation of a big week-end. The numerous moments of experience are evolved with this place we call . . . But, as I said, this world is a building . . . . . . and echoes through the rooms. And we suddenly realize there is no world ... no Ramsay High School . . . without the individual ... the you and the me . . . the motion, the sound . . . the touch . . . of HUMANITY. A crowd of faces a blur of mixed expressions impatient glances, humor laughter and boredom ... in an inborn desire to participate to socialize and share ideas The expressions of eternal conflict, struggling together toward glory . . . despair . gain ... or loss . . . a diligent last minute to cram for valuable information Faces jubilant with group cooperation . . . . . . and individual responsibility. The momentary, fleeing goals are pursued . . . and individuals seek solitary fate through effort and accomplishment This thread of harmony runs through the continuous work unseen by the majority . . . but highlights the results. and is directed by guidance of the group . . . and of the individual. FOR THESE REASONS, we love our world ... its purpose . . . and the hope which overshadows it. We are thankful that WE--the you and the me--have been a part of it and have had the privilege of sharing the opportunities ... the solitude ... the gregarious moments. The outside world first sees Ramsay as a whole, then the student himself. If the outsider has little interest or time, he may never notice the student. Yet it takes the individual students working together to make Ramsay. Faces come and go and past leaders are forgotten as the new students step into their places. As many of us leave Ramsay for the last time to go forth to a new life, may we hold high the ideas and ideals that we have considered dear in our world” . . . letting their truth shed light where there is darkness. An evermoving stream of humanity is the life of Ramsay. An integral part of that stream is you . . . the student. The places you went each day and the things you did were . . . RAMSAY HIGH SCHOOL 1965. May the memories of these halls sound with the and still is . . . and will be. Dedication In fond memory, we dedicate this yearbook to one who has passed from us. Bob Holt gave of himself through his efforts and helped with us toward the prosperity of the school. His faithfulness and devotion to Ramsay was an inspiration to us. With sincere respect and gratitude, we proudly and affectionately dedicate to Bob this 1965 Ram’s Horn. 12 Appreciation We, the students of Ramsay High School, express our appreciation to Mrs. Estelle Willingham. Since coming to Ramsay in 1957, she has graciously devoted her time and interest to the students. She is senior advisor, student government sponsor, and acting head of the math department. She plans the monthly calendar and the auditorium seating chart. Outside activities include being a mother to two, attending First Methodist Church and relaxing with her hobbies - sewing and knitting. Her favorite quotation is “As a man thinketh, so is he.” Giving praise where it is due, we thank you, Mrs. Willingham, for being a part of Ramsay High School. Principal’s Message The Annual Staff is again presenting a record of events, activities, organizations, and individual student pictures to provide for you many hours of pleasure. Each time you refer to your “Ram’s Horn” it will bring back treasured memories of your days at Ramsay of that particular year. I know that each of you will join with me in expressing gratitude to Mrs. Wills, the annual sponsor; Richard Kessler, editor; and the other members of the annual staff for making this fine “Ram's Horn” possible. My very best wishes to each student, faculty and staff member. You are an excellent group with whom to work. t % r Foreword In the 1965 RAM'S HORN, we have tried to capture the most memorial experiences of the past school year. Without the help of our friends, students, and faculty advisor, Mrs. Wills, our yearbook would not have been possible. We sincerely hope that you find much enjoyment as you read the pages of our book. We have energetically and persistently devoted many hours of work to give you the best annual in the history of Ramsay High School. After reading your book, we hope that you will realize and take notice of the many traditions which formed this 1964-1965 school year. If, after you have read the pages of the RAM’S HORN, you have developed a greater appreciation of the Ramsay High School tradition, you will have made worthwhile our purpose; recording the history in book form of what we believe to be the best high school in Birmingham. Getting out this yearbook is no picnic. If we print jokes, people say we’re silly; If we don't, people say we're serious. If we clip from other books, We're too lazy to write it ourselves; If we don’t, we’re stuck on our own stuff. If we stick to the job all day, We ought to be out hunting pictures; If we do get out and hustle, We ought to be putting first things first. If we don't.print contributions, We don’t appreciate true genius; If we do, the book is filled with junk. If we make a change in a fellow's write-up, We are too critical; If we don't, we are asleep. Now, like as not, someone will say We swiped this from some other book -- We did I Francine Mitchell Linda Black Eileen Booher Frank Kanelos Vills Nancy Giles Janie Salmon Ruth Palmer Jean Kendrick Lynn Sedwick Ram’s Horn Staff RAM'S HORN EDITOR: Richard Kessler SPONSOR: Mrs. Patt Wills SPORTS EDITOR: Wesley Reese ACTIVITY EDITOR: Nancy Giles ORGANIZATION EDITOR: Francine Mitchell BUSINESS MANAGER: Richie Wood PHOTOGRAPHER: Lynn Sedwick TYPISTS: Ruth Palmer Janie Salmon Eddie Travis ART EDITOR: Eileen Booher PATRON EDITOR: Linda Black CLASS SECTION: Billy Newsome Mary Ellen Benton Jean Kendrick Blyth McLeod 117 SPORT 1ST ROW: John Habshey, Lee Nicholson.
