Study + Activities Makes the Ram Mighty THEME f rom the Little White Ram to the Mighty Ram In September, 1930, an infant’s bleat was heard in the Birmingham school system. Erskine Ramsay High School was the little white lamb making its first appearnace. Each year it grew until in 1933 the full-grown Ram had its first graduating class. As a fully accredited high school, Ramsay took its rightful place among the city’s other high schools. As first only a timid “baa” was audible, but as the Ram’s horns grew, its voice developed. In September, 1946, when we, as freshmen, entered Ramsay High School, we were completely overawed by the healthy bawling of the now mighty Ram. We gazed in admiration at the accomplishments of the Ram and wondered how we could increase and improce its attainments. Now, as we seniors look forward to our graduation in the new auditorium and glance backward over the four years of our high school career, we are aware of our progress. Perhaps we also have aided the fomerly little white lamb to remain the mighty Ram. DEDICATION With sincere affection and a deep sense of gratitude, for her cooperation through all the years, the members of the class of 1950 dedicate their Annual to Ramsay’s efficient and gifted art instructor MISS EDRIS MARIE HUGHES FACULTY J. Ramsay is one of the smallest high schools in the city, but in spite of the small number it has captured its share of honors. The Highlander, the students' publication, won first prize at the Alabama State Fair for the third straight year. Ramsay's display also earned first place and a $25 prize. Individual winners at the Fair were Nan Elliot, Peggy Curlee, Joe Parsons, Monty Clark, Sue Maxwell, Kitty McKee, Martha Moore. Douglass Rowe. Dudley Peeler, Martha Hcwes. Faye Berman. Lucinda Brown. Elaine Brodnax, Molly Murrell, James Lee. Jimmy Thomas, Ruth Powers. Elizabeth Golightly, Jane Ktnard, and Dale Pratt. In the local Scholastic writing contest, Maxine Gould. Bobby Calhoun, Judy Wilhoit Bernard Steiner, and Norma Cullen won keys. Mickey Friedman won an award in the art division of the contest. During the school year two girls have been awarded prizes for essay . Lois Flowers won the American Legion contest, and Dionne Patterson received $100 for her theme on What Industry Means to Alabama. Minann Pearce. Nan Elliot, and Judy Wilhoit were given medals by the French government for their superior French work. Within the school Pat Patterson. Donald Plasse, John Durr, and Nancy Williams received awards from the National Honor Society for having the highest average in their freshman class. Caroline Trueman was presented the Exchange Club trophy as the outstanding member of the January senior class. James Lee was chosen as Ramsay’s representative for the Laurie Battle tour sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. Ramsay also holds its own in military ranks. Its rifle team, composed of Jimmy Parrish. Robert Rieves, Henry McNider, Max Rosenthal, Jimmy Kennedy. Harold Apolinsky. Benny Fitts, Clark Southard. Charles Kahn, and Charles Denaburg, holds first place in the city. Colonel Charles Kahn is the highest ranking cadet in the Big Five R. O. T. C. and heads the regimental staff. Major Herbert Hahn is also a member of the staff. The presentation of the Sportsmanship Cup was one of the highlights of the year at Ramsay. This, along with the selection of Lois Flowers as Good Citizenship Girl for the City, shows that the school is doing a good job of training its future citizens. With an all-round program such as this, it is easy to see why Ramsay students consider it the best high school in Birmingham. By Eleanor Greenwald. Sports Ramsay was well represented in the field of sports this last spring. The Blues won city championship in track, tennis, and baseball, and the state championship in track. Besides this, the football team was runner-up to the city champion West End Lions. In football Thomas Tharp, leading scorer in the city, and John Baumgartner represented Ramsay on the All-City team, selected by the Big Five Coaches each fall. Baumgartner was also voted the most valuable back in the county and was chosen for the first string of the All-State team. With a baseball team consisting of many inexperienced ball players and very few veterans, the Ram nine captured the city championship with a season record of nine wins and one loss. On the team were some freshmen who did fine work to help the team come out on top. The only returning lettermen were John Baumgartner, Charles Hatcher, and Bill Cash. Although the boys won the city championship, they lost out In the semifinals of the county play-offs. The tennis team took its third straight city championship in 1949. The Blue netters had an unmarred record in city competition, losing only eight individual matches. Our Rams finished a highly successful season with an over-all record of ten wins and two losses, both at the hands of the Sylacauga High team. Members of the team were Jack Le vis, Charles Kahn. Rhodes Mazer, Glenn Cobbs. Leon Edwards. Jimmy Sherman, Albert Lee Smiith. Don Drennen, and Frank Barker. Winning three out of the first four football games, the Ram eleven slowed down the latter part of the season and finished with a record of five wins and four losses. The Southside Gridders played in the Crippled Children’s Clinic Game for the fourth straight time and suffered their first post-season defeat at the hands of the City Champion, West End Lions. Lettermen were John Baumgartner. Eddie Pharo, Thomas Tharp. Jimmy Bridges, Ed Duncan. Ralph Dillon, Travis Lindsay, Albert Keenum, Jimmy Eubanks. Billy Whitten. Ray Vaughn, and Robert Jamison. Basketball was the only sport at Ramsay that was entirely unsuccessful. The luckless cagers finished the season with a record of three wins and fourteen losses. By far the most outstanding sport at Ramsay last spring was track. The track team won the city and state championships. They defeated Bessemer 26Vi to 26 at the state meet for state honors and did not lose a meet in the city league. Corky Tharp, hurdler on the team, broke the state record three times in the high hurdles. Other members of the squad were Percy Alford. Jack Lewis. Allan Drash, Bobby Whitten, Lloyd Ross. Donald Denman, Cecil Holladny. Jimmy Nelson. Jimmy Keenum, Herbert Hahn, and Ralph Dillon. On a whole the Ramsay athletes made a fine showing in all fields of sports; but above all. the student body backed the teams to the hilt and showed a most enthusiastic spirit By Donald Long.
