Slamming lockers, hurried conver- sations, and shuffling books precede the quieting hush of the 8:50 bell. The drone of lecture, the syn- copated taps from the typewriters and the buzz of sewing machines is interrupted for twenty minutes on the surmise that one can stand in line, purchase a lunch disk, stand in line, redeem the disk for a tray, and finish the lunch in the remaining eight minutes. Another bell and back to class. Eventually that long anticipated 5:55 bell sounds. Amid the scramble to cars and jostling for bus seats, students leave for home.
