The team, however, showed con- siderable spirit and enthusiasm, even though that first win never came. The soccer team had a great many underclassmen playing, and their inexperience showed on many occassions. One of the brightest spots during an otherwise dismal season, was the fine play of sophomore Ernie Fitzgibbon, who was rated by Coach Good- year as the team's top player. His play, along with those of Captain Louie Akoury, seniors Pete Banks, Jerry Thorner. Ron McKim, and Doug Tait, kept Quincy in close contention in many of the games. Juniors Joe Rosenthal, Bill Best, Bill Svenson, and A1 Schofield also did commendable jobs this year. In spite of its losses, Quincy High is certainly proud of its soccer team. Basketball It was a rather disappointing year for the Quincy High basketball team, as we finished with a record of nine wins and eleven losses, after making the Tech Tourney the two previous years. For the first six games, it seemed that Quincy would never get involved in a one-way game, as all the contests were extremely close and ex- citing. The Presidents opened the season with a wonderful upset victory over Malden. It looked as if we were off to a flying start when North Quincy tripped us, 52-47. This was the first of many disappointing games. The team suffered no less than three one- point losses, with two of them coming to league champion Somer- ville. By far, the season’s highlight was an unbelievable 54-53 victory over North in the return match. The game was won in the last two seconds, as Ken DiBona scored the tying bucket, and then converted a technical foul free throw to win the game. Outstanding for Quincy this year were Ken DiBona, the team’s high scorer, Pete Mariano, Dick Scanlon, John Pizzi, who did a great job all year, usually against superior height, and captain Ed Ferguson, who came through with many clutch rebounds and bas- kets. Providing good bench strength were Tom Di Tullio, Buzz Orio and Ron DiRamio. 128 John Pizzi goes up for a neat jump shot. JAMES VARANO Jimmy 26 Hopcdalc Street: is taking college course . . . Hockey Quincy 3 Everett 2 About all one could say for Quincy High's hockey team this year, Quincy 5 Chelsea 0 is that they were just great! In compiling a 10-3-1 record, our skaters Quincy 7 Don Bosco 3 made the State Tourney, and finished in a 2nd place tie with Quincy 3 Malden 0 Malden in the Met League race, behind unbeaten Revere. Quincy 0 Revere 5 The highlight of the season was the return match with Revere, Quincy 3 Columbus 2 after the Beach Boys had shut out the Presidents in the first game. Quincy 4 North 2 Quincy played probably its greatest game of the season, in forcing Quincy 5 Everett 1 Revere to come from behind to gain a 2-2 tic. Defensemen Bob Quincy 8 Chelsea 0 Carroll and Steve Marini did a magnificent job of thwarting Reverc’s Quincy 8 Don Bosco 2 high powered attack, while goalie Bob Stewart was tremendous in Quincy 1 Malden 2 the nets. Quincy 2 Revere 2 It was a different story in the State Tourney, however, as our boys Quincy 2 Columbus 4 were upset by Charlestown 4-2, thus eliminating us from the Tour- Quincy 7 North 1 ney. Quincy 2 Charlestown 4 Quincy also had some fine individual stars this year. Joe Valle, the center on the first line, finished in 2nd place in the league scoring race, and his lincmatc Dick Burrell also finished high among the league's top scorers. First line right winger, Joe ShcfTcr, although only playing the last few games, did a fine job for the Presidents. The second line of underclassmen Fran Bonani, Russ Erikson, and Dick Brunstrom, was a definite scoring threat all season. The junior defensemen, Carroll and Marini, both were great in protecting goalie Bob Stewart. Cliff Wcstbcrg also looked good when relieving Stewart. It was certainly a great year for Coach Hutchinson and his team. 134 Joe Valle lets go with a 30 footer. JOANNE WILE 41 Keyes Street; is taking the stenographic course . . . Chorus 1 . . . Ill « We Honor Mr. King To Mr. King You came to Quincy High School as an observer in the spring of 1962. You came to “look us over. to find out what the students and Quincy High School were like. Then in the fall of that year you came again, this time as our new principal. You came with all those qualities necessary to the task—honesty, justice, a sense of humor, dignity. And you came with the hope of making our school better than ever. We think you have. You have encouraged many of us with your friendship and advice. You have encouraged achievement by giving credit to those who deserve it. You have helped us to achieve national and international fame by giving your OK to the Quincy to Europe project. Most important of all. you have shown that you are a man with the courage of your convictions. Therefore, although you finally came to believe that you would be worth more as a teacher than as a principal, we, the Class of 1963, will always feel privileged and honored to have had the dis- tinction of being your graduating class. 139 First Row: W.
