THOMAS CRANE PUBLIC LIBRARY 40 WASHINGTON STREET QUINCY, MASS. 02169 u iic ruDiic LiWity Quincy, Maftit The Torch Has Been Passed WE, the graduating class of 1962. are emerging as American citizens and future leaders in a world far different from that which our parents inherited. We were conceived and born in the midst of a devastating war which proved to be the spawning ground for the barbed wire barricade, the scorched earth, the cries of oppressed peoples, the hammer and sickle of the growing, treacherous force called Communism. We will begin to take an active part in an existence threatened by every clash between democracy and totalitarianism and overshadowed by the unleashed powers of mass destruction. We will see the poverty arid misery of the downtrodden, the struggle of the little man against the dictator. For these reasons, the 1962 Goldenrod is using the words and inspiration of President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address as its theme. The purpose of this theme is not to lend a supersentimental. superpatriotic air to the yearbook—but rather to remind us of the president's declaration of our stand for liberty, our determination to rid underprivileged nations of poverty and ignorance, our loyalty to our allies, our resolve to make friend and foe alike work together for the true meaning of peaceful coexistence, and. most significant, our individual importance in preserving the precious heritage and goals founded by the first Americans so many years ago. It is up to us, the new generation of men and women taking over the problems facing us. to answer the president’s challenge: Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” Pamela Forde GOLDENROD QUINCY HIGH SCHOOL QUINCY MASSACHUSETTS 1962 CONTENTS She pledged her best efforts to help them help themselves. 4 DEDICATION Joy L. Nevens I'hc 1962 Goldenrod is dedicated to the memory of Miss Joy L. Nevens, Quincy High School English teacher for 36 years and head of the English Department since 1946. Besides her many outside endeavors, she found time to take a deep interest in the students and their activities. In the classroom, her pupils found her a strict but excellent instructor. In the words of a former student: She makes you think!” Her energetic figure and lively personality will be missed at Quincy High School. 5 DR. PAUL GOSSARD Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1962: After forty-one years in the teaching pro- fession as teacher and administrator, I wish to commend you for maintaining stability in a world of constant unrest. We are now in a nuclear age, an age of speed. We are forced into a world citizenship, but we must never forget our heritage and the ideals of true de- mocracy. It is your duty and privilege to bend every elfort to make our country and the world a better place in which to live. Best wishes to all of you from us on the staff. Sincerely, GEORGE A. FOOTBALL In tile opening game of the season against Brockton, Quincy’s squad was up to full strength, and the boys hoped to end Brockton's long winning streak. Quincy’s offense moved the ball well, but Brockton was not to be denied the victory as they went on to win 42-18. A succession of five losses to Somerville. Everett, Weymouth, Malden, and Brookline followed. Quincy’s first victory came against Chelsea, with the boys scoring seven touchdowns for a 46-16 win. The following week Quincy won again, beating Medford 26-12. In the annual Thanksgiving Day game an excellent efTort by the team, especially the seniors, gave Quincy a 20-0 shutout over North. Playing a fifteen game schedule, the boys were unable to win a game. Against Avon, however, Quincy was almost successful; and if luck had been with the boys, the 1-0 defeat could have been a victory. The major factor for the team’s poor showing, Coach Goodyear feels, was the loss of many experienced players to graduation. The many new boys on the squad showed talent and fight, but were greatly handicapped by their lack of experi- ence. Kick ’em out boys 130 Who’ll kick it?
