Thomas Crane Public Library Quincy, Massachusetts ------------ Presented by PRESENTS QUINCY HIGH SCHOOL Quincy, Massachusetts “And the Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2: 9 I ' 4 Quincy High School has been our tree of knowledge and of life for the past three years. Within these walls our character has been molded, our friendships made, and our lives enriched by understanding. The seeds of knowledge and wisdom have been firmly planted in our minds, and now we are ready to face the future. Al- though we have partaken of the best nourishment that Quincy High School has to offer, there is still a never- ending supply for all who will take our place in years to come. Long after we have attained our goals in life, our alma mater will stand, sturdy and strong, as a tree of knowledge for the future youth of Quincy. t 5 Dr. Charles Djerf; Dr. Edward S. Mann; Mr. Charles Sweeney; Mr. A. Wendell Clark, Vice- Chairman; Mr. Amelio Della Chiesa. Chairman; Dr. Paul A. Gossard, Superintendent of Schools; Miss Marion Nilsen, Clerk; Mrs. Alice Mitchell; Mr. Paul K. Duffey. To the Class of 1958: Members of the School Committee seldom have occasion for any direct relationship with the student body; yet, we are vitally interested in your welfare and educational advancement. It is my privilege to direct this message to the members of your class on behalf of my fellow committee members. During the twelve-year period since you entered the first grade, great changes have taken place in our school system. From a physical standpoint we have added six new buildings and completed additions to five existing schools to accommodate an increased enrollment of more than four thousand pupils. Educationally we have added kindergarten classes, new trade classes, special classes for sight conservation and other physically handicapped pupils. Our cur- riculum at all levels has been improved and strengthened to provide a well-rounded education to meet modem needs. Educational consultants at the elementary and secondary levels now co-ordinate materials and methods, while teacher workshops have served to improve and strengthen the effectiveness of their teaching. To function as a high-grade school system it is costing more than five million dollars per year, or about one-third of the total tax levied on Quincy taxpayers. Our average cost per pupil is about $273.00 per year, which means that the city of Quincy has invested more than $3000.00 in your education, to say nothing of the cost of new buildings and expanded facilities. It is our sincere hope that your educational experience has justified our faith in your ability to make the best possible use of your talents and to become worthy citizens in a better community. Cordially yours, Vice Chairman Quincy School Committee 6 To the Class of 1958: As you read the pages of this, your yearbook, in the days ahead, you may look back upon your high school as a place set back from the road, like a refreshing grove of trees, a place affording you a chance for growth of mind and personality. In the years ahead my hope is that you will try to give to your community, your friends, your families, that same beauty of life and refreshment of mind which the trees give to the traveler who comes upon them in his journey. Quincy Public Schools Sincerely, Superintendent To the Class of 1958: “’Tis education forms the common mind, As the twig is bent, the tree's inclined.” For twelve long years you have been climbing the tree of education. I hope many of you will want to venture higher. May you study to help in the development of spectacular electronic devices, interspace travel, un- limited food and fuel supply, amazing medical progress and other miracles of science. The growing tree from the roots up well represents the preparation of youth to live in the complicated world of tomorrow. May you be ready! Best wishes from the whole faculty. Sincerely, Principal Quincy High School To the Class of 1958: In this age it is difficult to fathom the wonders of the world about us—wonders wrought through the minds and hands of men. These things are not the result of chance; they are the result of work, work of generations of world culture that have been blessed with the strong urge to progress—to do—to develop—and to pass on to succeeding generations the fruit of their work. From this I have learned: that work for the indi- vidual is a fortress against want, a shield against de- generation, a lance in the struggle for progress, and for our nation it is the key to our very existence. Therefore, may you dedicate your future to work as an educative and saving force, and may you continue to train your minds and hearts and hands in order to find happiness in the service of mankind., Sincerely, Director Quincy Trade School GOLDENROD STAFF EDITORS-IN-CHIEF Virginia Coury, Carole Golob, Richard Lee. Cultivated by a people proud of their heritage and nurtured by each new generation, this tree is sustained by the ever-growing prosperity of our city. Founded in 1625, Quincy was one of the earliest set- tlements in New England. It was separated from Boston in 1640 but remained a part of Braintree until 1793 when it became a town. Since 1888 it has been the only city in Norfolk County. Living in a city which provides a direct entrance to the past gives the youth of Quincy an opportunity to learn the characteristics of great men. As loyal subjects of the Crown, the men of Quincy played their part dur- ing the seventeenth century; as revolutionary patriots, they fought for freedom; as citizens of Massachusetts, they gave their whole-hearted support to the new Re- public. We who live in a land of such glorious heritage 10 OF KNOWLEDGE are justly proud of the past. Residents of Quincy take great pride in the fact that their city is the birthplace of two great Presidents— John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Their homes attract people from all over the world and provide a first-hand education for the youth of Quincy. The for- mer Presidents and their wives are buried in the crypt of the First Parish Church, which is located in the heart of the city. Here in Quincy, too, was born John Han- cock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence. The John Hancock Grammar School was named in honor of this great American statesman. While some citizens of early Quincy were becoming leaders in education and government, others were lay- ing the foundations of industry. The development of these industries made Quincy a prosperous business center. The growth of this city from a community of farms to a center of industrial activity was due in part A new rocket fuel. Isn’t that an amoeba? And here’s a little plot we bought.' to three men: Solomon Willard, father of the granite industry; Gridley Bryant, builder of the granite industry; and Colonel Thomas Perkins, a financier. All became associated with the granite industry because the demand for suitable material for the erection of the Bunker Hill Monument led to the actual opening of the granite quar- ries in Quincy. Under favorable conditions this industry expanded so greatly that it became necessary to build the first commercial railroad to carry the granite blocks to the Neponsct River. The granite industry, however, is only one part of Quincy’s industrial picture. Quincy also boasts of the successful Fore River Shipyard, one of the most im- portant shipyards in New England. Here have been built frigates which transported goods to all corners of the globe, ships that were used in time of war, and now, atomic-powered vessels to be used in the world of to- Captain Midnight and his crew. ‘Man! That Lincoln was on the beam! morrow. Quincy is also the biggest shopping center south of Boston and attracts people from the entire South Shore. Another phase of Quincy’s progress can be seen in the field of education. The Thomas Crane Public Library, one of the finest libraries in this area, has aided im- mensely in this development. From the early days of Quincy to the present time, education in our city has advanced steadily. From 1640 to the opening of the Quincy High School on May 12, 1852, only a very limited grammar school education was available. The first Quincy High School was erected on the site that is now 21 High School Avenue. It was not until 1890 that another high school was completed. In 1906 this was enlarged and remodeled to its present form, Central Junior High School. It was used as a four year high school until 1924 when the present Quincy “Hcncc! DC — ... Make your lines darker.' 13 Leave it to Pythagoras. High School building on Coddington Street was built. The Quincy Trade School had its beginnings in the Quincy Independent Industrial School organized in 1912. This was first located in the building on Hancock Street but was later transferred in 1913 to the Adams School on Phillips Street and in 1924 to the new Cod- dington Street high school building. In 1930 the school became officially known as the Quincy Trade School. It was enlarged in 1952 when a twenty-room addition was added to it. The present Q. H. S. and Trade buildings are of cream-colored brick and together have a student mem- bership of 1907 and a faculty of 94. The two buildings have approximately 95 rooms, auditoriums, labora- tories, and rooms for shop work. The ultimate aim of education in Quincy is to prepare 14 youth for a successful and rewarding life, to prepare them not only vocationally, but also socially, physically, and culturally. To achieve this goal, Quincy High not only offers commerical, trade, general, and college pre- paratory courses, but also vocational adjustment, social adjustment, family living, art, practical arts, and music classes. In its own way, each of these contributes to the primary objective. Through studies of history, geography, government, and relations of nations in social studies classes, students learn good citizenship, friendly relations, and the prin- ciples of Democrary. Geography, Modern European History, Problems of Democracy, and a combined course of U.S. History and civics form an important part of the QHS curriculum, for they encourage students to learn more about and do more for their city and their 15 Adjusting to QHS. UNIVAC could never beat this. A word from the wise. country. An opportunity to participate in a miniature UN was given to ten QHS students on March 22. With students from many other high schools they visited Har- vard University; each, representing a different country, attended committee meetings and a General Assembly. With the increased emphasis on scientific advance- ment, the demand for students proficient in mathe- matics and science becomes greater each day. To meet this new challenge, QHS offers courses in aeronautics, biology, chemistry, physics, photography, radio, and applied science. These classes help students to under- stand better the natural laws operating in the world we live in, introduce them to laboratory work, and ac- quaint them with the scientific method. Mathematics courses, ranging from general mathematics to solid geometry and trigonometry, not only prepare future engineers but also develop clear and logical thinking. 48 words a minute. 47 mistakes! 16 Invitation to the Rotary Club. Five different foreign languages are offered at Quincy High School. Three year courses in French, German, and Spanish, a two year course in Italian, and second year Latin arc given. The teachers endeavor to teach pupils to speak and write the languages and to learn of the people, culture, and life of the other nations. To help its pupils appreciate and know some of the cultural aspects of life, QHS provides classes in art, practical arts, and music. Classes in art appreciation, art history, art in dress, freehand drawing, and history of costume show art in its practical and cultural forms. Courses in cafeteria training, clothing and textiles, diatetics, food and nutrition, home decoration, and drivers’ education provide a practical background for the citizens of tomorrow. For those who are musically inclined, band, glee club, chorus, chapel choir, and classes in music appreciation and harmony arc available. Just before the toss. Getting clerical experience. Bottoms up. 17 To prepare students socially as well as vocationally for their future life, there arc class discussions, group projects, conferences, and audio-visual instruction. School adjustment, family living, and vocational ad- justment courses present different phases of social and vocational problems. These classes try to prepare the youth at QHS to meet and overcome the problems that might confront them. To give pupils an introduction to actual working con- ditions, the Distributive Education Program places some students in part-time jobs which arc under super- vised employment. To help its youth live a physically healthy life, QHS has health instruction in its gym classes and gives health tests, such as physical examinations, audio and sight tests, and also TB Tests. A registered nurse, Mrs. 18 Nettiedean Alexander, is at the school throughout the day to safeguard the health of the students and faculty. The Department of Guidance under Mr. George Phillips gives advice to every QHS student throughout his three years in high school. The counsellors help pupils choose the career best for him, elect the proper subjects, and plan ahead for the future. Whenever ad- vice is needed concerning future plans, grades, and various problems, the counsellors willingly guide the students. The Quincy Trade School is a state-aided trade school offering three year courses in the following trades: auto body, auto mechanics, cabinet making, electricity, machine shop, pattern making, plumbing, radio and television, and sheet metal. Fifty percent of the time is given to productive shop 19 A lesson in salesmanship. Learning from the ground up. work; approximately thirty percent to trade related mathematics, drawing, and science; and about twenty percent to English, U.S. History, and Problems of Democracy. Related mathematics differs with the trade taught, but consists in all cases of everything of a mathe- matical nature that can be used as a tool of the trade. Related drawing and related science also differ with the trade taught. The type of English is practical rather than appreciative. The U.S. History course covers a period of two years, and the course in Problems of Democracy, one year. The history classes place most emphasis on the period since 1865. Economic, social, and cultural activities are studied. The hygiene course relates to safety-first methods, first aid, and cleanliness. By state regulation, candidates for this school must be at least fourteen years of age and have completed the sixth grade of elementary school. As the state limits the number of pupils per instructor, a candidate is seldom admitted who has not completed at least the ninth grade. A Quincy High School diploma is awarded to those students who complete the Trade School course after completing the ninth grade. The people of Quincy arc fortunate to have these educational facilities available. We are deeply apprecia- tive and grateful to all who have given us these advan- tages: the School Committee; Mayor Amelio Della Chiesa; Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gossard; the principals of all schools; and Mr. George Wilson, the principal of Q.H.S.; and Mr. Maurice Daly, Di- rector of Trade. A vote of thanks also is due to our very competent faculty and personnel. The educational op- portunities are designed to make youth capable and well-informed people, people who will know their duty and do it, and people who will be the peacemakers and the pacemakers of tomorrow’s world. The teachers of QHS have will- ingly undertaken this task and have helped us grow into well-informed adults. We seniors shall always be indebted to our faculty for the sympathetic guidance and excellent instruction which they have given us at Quincy High. IN MEMORIAM MARY T. Every ounce of learning, every opportunity, every lesson in citizenship has been given to us to make us the finest adults. With this excellent training instilled in us, we should be well prepared to embark upon our journey into the world and to leave behind us the shelter of our tree of knowledge. C.stJUd- CLASS OF ’59 The Class of ’59, consisting of approximately 480 fine members, is now in the process of becoming QHS’s gift to the civilized world. They have been studying vigorously, participating in all club activities with enthusiasm, and giving their whole-hearted support to the dances, sports events, and musical programs in the best of Quincy High tradition. Next year the Fifty-niners will assume an exalted role as seniors under the leadership of Peter Finlay, president; Richard Beaumont, vice-president; Mary Chiminello, secretary; and Eleanor Barry, treasurer. The graduating class of ’58 takes this opportunity to wish these duly elected officers and all their loyal subjects a most successful senior year. 73 CLASS OF 60 Newcomers to Quincy High this year, the class of 1960 numbers no less than 730. Upon their arrival, some of the sophomores found themselves delegated to the lowest floor of our school, where two new homerooms had been created for them. Also designed for them, or at least for the female half of the class, is the Sophomore Girls’ Glee Club and the Future Nurses Club for sophomore girls. The male half has the opportunity to participate in junior varsity sports and other activities. Sophomores also have their Wednesday assemblies at which they can scoop current QHS events two days ahead of their upper-classmen. Good luck, sophomores! We hope your next two years at Quincy High will be filled with profitable, happy days. 74 CALENDAR SEPTEMBER Our “Little Sophs” enter the portals of OHS. Juniors and Seniors return to the grind of the coming year. Seniors are photographed for the Goldcnrod. A new record was set for broken cameras. (They DON’T!!!) Under the patient guidance of Miss Dora Kelley, they work diligently throughout the year cropping pic- tures, composing write-ups, laying out pages, and doing countless other tasks. At the same time, the harassed artists slave over their drawing boards in an effort to live up to the tyrannical demands of the co-editors. When the book is finally published, when the editors breathe sighs of relief, then will peace and harmony reign supreme in the Golden- rod office once more! “Who is this character?” ?om I: T. Once this task is completed, the Business Staff, still thirsting for money, torment every senior at OHS until all payments are collected. Then and only then can this group sit back and call it a day. The members not only gain invaluable experience in writing, but also have the chance to see their work printed in the Quincy Patriot Ledger. Each week they prepare a column about the goings-on at QHS so that the readers of the Ledger may keep well-informed. Mr. William Bigoness is their advisor. All clubs are hereby cautioned to be on the lookout, for these future reporters arc said to have the noses of bloodhounds when following a hot tip. WRITERS’ WORKSHOP Like to write mystery stories? Poems? Short stories? Then Writers’ Workshop is for you. Under the guidance of Miss Marie Poland, this group allows creative students to cultivate their literary talents and have constructive criticisms on their efforts. Sometimes some of their work is published. Yes! that’s true. Perhaps, who knows, there may be a future Shakespeare in this club. Row I: K. Gallagher, M. MeGinty, J. Mahoney. M. Chiango. L. Nutting. FUTURE NURSES Patience, understanding, and willingness are the qualities found in the girls of Quincy High’s Future Nurses’ Club. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Nettiedean Alexander, R.N., the girls enjoy many activities which will prepare them for nurses training. The members are under the capable leadership of Elaine Humey, presi- dent; Linda Nutting, treasurer; and Mary Chiminello. secretary. The high-light of this year’s club activities was a trip to the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital on February 19. Another important event was the formation of a separate sophomore unit. This Club has always been one well attended. Now, with the added impetus of the sophomores, it will always remain one of the favorites of QHS. 92 Row 1: L. Nutting, P. Williams. S. Rotunno. The club meets to discuss various prob- lems which the girls will face as homemakers. One special project this year was filling a Thanksgiving basket for a needy family. A special meeting was held in the Coddington School with Mrs. Rose Cherubini who spoke about “Planning Your Wedding.” Although most of the girls plan on waiting a few years, it’s a good thing to think about. The officers are: Fred Drifmcycr, president; Jacqueline Treese, vice- president; Richard DiCenso secretary; and Gordon Carr, treasurer. Whether it be at a football game, in a rally, or during a tournament play, you will definitely sec and hear them hoarsely but jubilantly cheering our teams on to victory. Once in a while—defeat. But without their energetic support, many games might have been lost. Of course, the team deserves some credit, too. At any rate, they are adorable, permanent fixtures around QHS, and we love ’em. FOOTBALL Quincy drew the curtain on its 1957 football season with a record of three wins, one tie, and four defeats. Throughout the season, the “Prexies,” under the able and tireless coaching of Mr. Sullivan and his assistant, Mr. Basiliere, displayed the same old fight and spirit that have always characterized Quincy High teams. Quincy’s three main objectives were Brockton, Weymouth, and North Quincy. Quincy’s sharp blocking and tackling in the Brockton game brought a 20-8 victory. Weymouth was the next objective. When the “Presidents” had to yield the ball as the final minute neared, Weymouth made the winning strike and defeated Quincy 12-7. Ouincy for the first time tried to platoon Everett but didn’t have that extra punch to break the 6-6 tie. In the Malden game, during the flu epidemic, Quincy ran into foul weather and was defeated by the Golden Tornadoes, 23-14. The Brookline- Quincy encounter was. a great defensive game during the first half, but Brookline proved too strong and Quincy was downed 27-6. Quincy came back to defeat a good Chelsea, 26-12, by playing one of its best games since the opening of the season. During the Medford-Quincy contest, a pulse-throbbing match, a total of 33 points were scored during the last four minutes of play, and gave Medford the victory, 25-21. Noel Balducci starred in a 90-yard punt return. In the annual Thanksgiving day clash with North Quincy, the “Prexies” defeated their arch rival, 18-7. Noel Balducci was named the game's outstanding player and winner of the Jack Granville Trophy. Thus a hard fighting Quincy High team ended the season on a happy note. 116 P 4, P 'fo o ptigfk lo RECORD Quincy 20 Brockton 8 Quincy 7 Weymouth 12 Quincy . 6 Everett 6 Quincy 14 Malden 23 Quincy 6 Brookline 27 Quincy 26 Chelsea 12 Quincy 21 Medford 25 Quincy 18 North Quincy 7 ■ ° 117 Vinnic Bobo Row I: T. A pair of defeats came at the hands of Everett; the first, before the team had begun to jell; and the other, as a slim three- point hcartbrcakcr. Somerville accounted for the other blot in the dawning moments of the season’s play. The Presidents made up for these setbacks a thousand fold, when they ambushed the league leaders in a return engagement by handing them their only blemish on an otherwise spotless eighteen game schedule. Scituate's loss was Quincy’s gain, as Eddie Dunham paced the scorers for the second straight year. Our adopted son and his patented jumper zeroed in better than 21 points a contest. In the process he shattered the individual scoring mark with a tremendous 33 point exhibition against Medford. Two games later, Eddie did a 32 point stint as Weymouth provided the competition. In the final outing of the year, the little wonder tied his own newly acquired record. Even under the expert auspices of Coach Monroe MacLean and Assistant Coach Martin Finnegan, the team could not have gone so far had not everybody pitched in and done his level best. Here arc some of the ingredients brewed together that produced the excellent results: The superb ball handling of Harvey Edwards; A1 Rapp's consistent play; the flashy defensive chores of Ralph Larson and Bill Den- nison; Tom Conners’ steady back court assignments; Whitcy Richards’ go-go; and last but certainly not least, the dependable work of the talented Prexics bench. Quincy’s stay in the Tech Tourney was a brief one. In their first game with Brockton the injury-hampered five were finally eliminated 69-68 in a tense and wild overtime thriller. 120 Eddie Whitey Row 1: R. Fisher. R. Evans, G. Green. J. Walsh, P. BASKETBALL Coach Martin Finnegan’s young, untried jayvees, minus all last year’s starters, produced better than average re- sults. The Junior Prexies, after a shaky start, developed under fire into a first rate outfit. In fact, they closed with a rush and a roar by taking eight of the last eleven decisions. Row I: R. Harris. W. CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country team experienced its finest season in many years. Harvey Ed- wards, highlighting the successful cam- paign, received notable assistance from Eddie Dunham. John Mitchell, and Guy DeAngelo. Harvey’s eighth place finish in the State Meet, among the cream of the school-boy crop, ranked tops in Quincy’s turf accomplishments. The Presidents numbered among their victims rugged Brockton and North Quincy. They also made an impressive showing in the annual State and South Shore Meets. Row I: B. Pearson. J. Gunning. B. Toland. Quincy 0 «iifimunni in wmitll tt,lF With speed and stamina as their watch words, the OHS Hockey team skated through a rewarding winter campaign among the toughest kind of school-boy competition. Much credit is to be given to Mr. William Hutchinson for his patience and instruc- tion. Five wins, two tics, and single defeat were the results of the season’s play. Quincy was competing for the first time in the newly formed Metropolitan Hockey League against Christopher Columbus, North High, and Revere. The Presi- dents finished second. Only a single goal stood between them and an equal share of the top honors. Bob McCabe spearheaded the potent Quincy attack with twelve goals. For the third straight year Ted Houghton, a flashy, defensive tower of strength, produced three goals and eight assists for a total of eleven points. Two other dependable point-getters. Bob Wilson and Don Dcttoni, contributed a total of nine points. Such an array of hockey talent did not go unnoticed. The Prexies received an invitation to participate in the annual State Tournament and in their first game eliminated highly regarded Boston Latin 2-0. Goalie Earl Mooney posted his third shut-out of the year as Bob McCabe racked up both Quincy goals. Quincy drew top-seeded Walpole for their second tilt. Undaunted by prophetic reports of doom, the boys threw caution to the winds. Fighting to the bitter end, our valiant gladi- ators succumbed to unquestionably superior forces 3-0. 124 2± HOCKEY CANDIDS “Pass Mac. pass!” “I’m not moving for anyone!' “It isn’t in. fella!' “If I had my life to live over . . .!'
