- . QUEENSBURY PUBLIC SCHOOL CLASS OF 1953 EDITION NUMBER I DEDICATION We, the first graduating class of Queensbury High School, believe it is fitting and proper to dedicate our first yearbook to those who made our school possible, THE PEOPLE OF QUEENS- BURY. By September, 1950, the new building was opened to classes from kindergarten through the ninth grades. At this time enrollment was 500 pupils. Construction was still underway to complete the high school wing. This was finished by the early part of 1952, and the enrollment had increased by over 400 new stu- dents. We entered Queensbury High School in our junior year knowing very few of the students. After a few months of struggling along in a new environment, we finally became accustomed to the teachers and students. As a class of nine, we elected the following officers during our first homeroom meeting: president, Arline Farr; vice president, Marjorie Hall; secretary, Ruth Center; and treasurer, Donald Martell. Mr. and Mrs. James Cafaro were our class advisors. (Mrs. Cafaro was known as Miss Meehan in those days.) The most exciting year was our junior year in which we established the tradition for the first class ring, which was designed by our fellow classmate, Leon Sleight. We also were the first class at Queensbury to present a jun- ior play. It was entitled Bolts and Nuts”, and every junior participated. Since we had such a small class, a few of the freshmen and sophomores helped make the play possible. Because of Mrs. Betty Rooke's time and ef- fort, the play turned out to be a real success. After the play, we presented a bouquet of red roses to her as a small token of our appreciation. Five more students joined our class at the beginning of our senior year. Highlighting our senior year was the publication of our yearbook. Much rushing came about because of the late start on the yearbook; however, it will leave lasting memories for our future years. We are indebted to Mr. Barton, our principal, the Board of Ed- ucation, and the faculty and students for their untiring efforts in making this book a success. As the year comes to a close, we are looking forward to our senior banquet and a class day which we are anxious to make possible. Of course, the big day of the year is Monday, June 22, 1953--our graduation dayl 13 THE GOLDEN TIME AHEAD Let's imagine ourselves in the year 19631 Why do we choose this year? This year the class of '53 is return- ing to Q. H. S. for a reunion to revive old friendships. My, here comes Dave Dausl We all remember Dave as a leader of government and athletics. Known as a famous electrical engineer, he has just completed Daus's Phonovision Plant with the help of Margie Hall, his pri- vate secretary. Margie, who was always so quiet and reserved, has become president of the P. P. T. A. (Phono Plant's Trav- eling Ambassadors). This keeps her quite busy as she is now touring the Hawaiian Islands for the company. Leon Sleight, movie photographer, takes still pictures as well as motion pictures. His photos may be seen in many magazines. Recently he has received an award, as he was able to obtain a picture of Pat Durant, stage and television star for Life Magazine. Leon found that this was a ditficult task. Patti is now engaged in rehearsals for a new musical comedy, Wings On My Feet. ” She spends her spare time teaching variety dancing at N. Y. U. and writing. We notice she has a new hair-style, especially created for her by Miss Judith Gale of Judi’s Beauty Salons. To elaborate upon her success-Judi's Salons are famous throughout the United States and parts of Europe. Having traveled most of the past ten years, she is dressed exquisitely in the latest fashions. Today she has on a new Mari-Anne afternoon dress. The now famous Mari-Anne of Hollywood is better known to us as Marianne Schuitze. Accompanying her is her companion and advisor Miss Arline Farr. Both Arline and Marianne tell us that their sales have reached the million-dollar mark, and that they will soon open a shop on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Ruth Center, remembered for her ability to hold her own during debates, is now a member of the United States Senate. Although she found it very difficult to leave her job, we are glad such an important person could be with us. Recently, she appeared as a guest on Carol Fish’s Quiz Club. Carol has been very successful with her television show. Any questions having to do with politics, the theatre, and literature are answered on her show. This well-known critic recently purchased a home in Connecticut where she plans to do research work. Joan Hall, better known as Bambi Boyce, to her readers, is the authoress of that new novel, LADY LUCK. One may find her book in the better book stores priced at five dollars per copy. At present she is working on a broadway play, which she hopes to produce. Slowly the year 1963 fades before us and we return to the present. From the different walks of life, we have met the seniors one by one. There are contentment and security in our hearts for we know that each and every- one of us shall be successful in our own right in the Golden Time Ahead! 15 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President: Carlos Bombard Vice President: Janet Gilman Secretary: Mary Ellen McDermott Treasurer: Daniel Morrell Fred Austin, Carlos Bombard, Lester Bowker, Samuel Boynton, William Campbell. Always we've striven to reach our goal. Sometimes our aim has been quite high; But, our fighting spirit urged us on And provided the will to try. Many a time, we will reminisce When we have gone different ways, Still our thoughts will always return To our wonderful high school days. To the faculty and student friends. Who have helped us along the way, A heartful of thanks and gratitude Is extended to you today. So we salute our Alma Mater” To which we were loyal and true Though we are leaving, we will maintain Our faith in the Gold and the Blue. Mrs. Dorothy Cafaro, Director 20 On November 19, 1952, Mr. Sydney Van Dusen, a former member of the Board of Education, presented to the school a much needed basketball time and score clock. Mr. John Austin, President of the Board, accepted the gift on be- half of the school. In appreciation, the students of Queensbury Public School would like to thank Mr. Van Dusen for this wonder- ful gesture. Coach Robert Hughes, after completing his elementary education, attended Green Mt. Junior College for two years. Soon after his graduation in 1941, he entered the Army Medical Corps. After Serving 29 months in England and France, he was honorably discharged in December, 1945. He then entered Ithaca College and received his B. S. in Physical Education in August, 1948. This year marks coach's fifth year in the Queensbury School system. This June, coach will have completed his 32 hours of graduate work in guidance at the New York State College for Teachers at Albany. Mr. Nesbcrt DeHoney, coach of our champion JV's, hails from Mooresville, In- diana. He attended high school and Earlham College in Indiana. From Earlham, he went into the navy for three years where he had overseas duty. After being released to inactive duty, he taught and coached football, basketball, track, golf, and tennis in Connersville, Indiana schools. After coming to New York, he attended State Teachers' College in Albany where he earned his Master's Degree. From there he joined us at Queensbury High as teacher of math and science in the junior high. 22 BASKETBALL VARSITY Fred Austin; William Campbell; Dave Daus. Captain; Don Daus; LeRoy Kubricky; Carson Langworthy; Robert McDermott; Daniel Morrell; Dick Purdy; Robert Purdy, Manager; Richard Sawn; Leon Sleight; Dale Taylor. Coach: Mr. Robert Hughes. Last year marked the first basketball season for Queensbury High School. It was to be expected that due to lack of experience and lack of a senior class, the wins would be few. However, the Queensmen earned one of the most prized possessions of the Adirondack Basketball league--the Sportsmanship Trophy for outstanding conduct on and about the basketball floor. By the time the 1952-53 season started, the Queensmen had gained some much needed experience and seem- ed prepared to make a better showing. In league play they won six games and lost four, placing Queensbury third --quite a change from the previous year. The four mainstays of attack were captain Dave Daus, our scoring leader at center; and Carson Langworthy, Dale Taylor, and Willie Campbell. In addition to this, Queensbury High was again honored by being awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy for the 1952-53 season. 23 JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL SQUAD Claude Charlebois, Walter Chatterton, Paul Counter, Henry Graham, Jack Harvey, Fred Hcym, Edward Judson, Paul Lampson, Fred La Pann, Roland Legault, Jack Murphy, Tom Murphy, Daniel Olson, Ronald Purdy. Allen Read. Danny Smith, Robert Tromblee. Coach: Mr. Nesbert DeHoney. The Junior High trophy and the regulars who Coach De- Honey called upon when the chips were down. These boys lost only one game out of eleven, this an overtime ?;ame which was avenged a ter in the season by 15 points. Only two of these boys will be eligible for jun- ior high competition next year. The other four fresh- men have to move up to var- sity competition. 24 BASEBALL HIGHLIGHTS The 1952 baseball team, under the able direction of Coach Robert Hughes, had a fine start last season. Coach Hughes molded an active team from the green recruits who went out last year. Although losing all but one game, the team gained an enormous amount of experience from the losing of those games. The one win they had, their last one, was sparked by Jerry Monahan who pitched a no-hitter against Lake George winning 10-0. Don Daus, one of Mr. Hughes' best pitchers, acted as captain of last year's squad. Lester Baird, Manager; Carlos Bombard; Richard Crannell; David Daus; Donald Daus, Captain; Roger Farr; Robert Geroux; Richard Jones; Carson Langworthy; Robert McDermott; Gerald Monahan; Daniel Morrell; Richard Purdy; Richard Sawn- Leon Sleight. Harriet Harrington had better take care of JUDY GALE'S Richard. DAVE DAUS’S intelligence goes to the class of 1954. Corky Bombard surely will appreciate LEON SLEIGHT'S straight hair. For a shocking change, MARIANNE SCHULZE leaves her blond hair to Mary Ellen McDermott. Bob McDermott will be glad to know that CAROL FISH has left him her love for school. Fred LaPann certainly can make good use of PAT DURANT'S dancing ability. We do hope that the juniors will not fight over ARLINE FARR'S freckles. Signed by the Class President: Witnesses: 48
