Field Hockey The varsity girls ' field hockey team continued its win- nii ways this year. The team, co-captained by senior Sue Valardi and junior Terry Germain, finished strong with an 8-5-1 record in Wachusett League play. The girls outscored their opponents 31 to 16 in Aeir fourteen games . Sue ended her Quabbin career as high scorer for the third straight year, picking up 15 goals and three hat tricks . Cathy Fulton finished second in scoring with 9 goals . The JV field hockey team was the most spirited and most finely developed squad of its type in Quabbin his- tory. The girls blazed to a 9-4-1 mark this year, led by co-captains Tammi Griffin and Cindy Kowal. Tammi set a jayvee scoring record this season, notching 12 goals. She was followed by Sue Ruddy, who scored 9 goals. With such promising development on the jayvee level, the up- coming seasons of Quabbin field hockey look very promising . Cross Country The varsity cross country team, who lost two of its finest runners at graduation last year, compiled a 3-10 record this season. The team defeated Athol High, Keith Tech and Notre Dame. Junior Mike Stevens ran many impressive races this season, and broke several course records. The squad was co-captained by Tim Ruggles and Phil Halfrey. The jayvee squad, spurred on by the constant improvement of its freshman and junior high members, ran its season ' s record to 8 wins and 5 losses. Girls Basketball DISTRICT III SMALL SCHOOL CHAMPIONS The varsity girls not only clinched their second con- secutive Wachusett League title this year, but were also crowned as District III (Central Mass.) Champions Feb- ruary 28 under first year coach Debra Spinelli. The girls, top-seeded in the Districts, defeated league rival Lunenburg High in the finals, to capture Quabbin ' s first girls district title to date. The squad, 17-3 overall, had advanced to the State semi-finals as this book went to press . In the past two seasons, the girls have compiled a very impressive 34-6’won-loss record. This season, the team ' s co-captains were seniors Barbara Kowal and Susan Valardi. In addition to Barb and Sue, the team is losing 3 more of its finer players in playmaker-guard Cyndy Miller and guards June Hubbard and Cathy Fulton through graduation. With many underclassmen on the team, the girls have the nucleus to provide many more winning seasons . Quabbin ' s jayvee girls finished sixth in the Wachusett League standings with a 6-6 record, and were 7-7 overall. Injuries and team absences hurt the girls in the long run, but, comprised mostly of jimior high members, they pro- gressed very well as the season went along. Joy Clark, Sue Ruddy and Lori Sinkoski moved up to the tournament- bound varsity at the end of the season. Soccer The varsity soccer team, under the coaching of Ray Tur- cotte, continues to put together outstanding seasons. This year the team had a 12-4 record in Quaboag League compe- tition. Senior Rick Lindsten completed the season as top scorer, tallying 31 goals and 8 assists for 39 points. Rick was also named to the Mass. All Star team. Senior Jim Owens recorded 27 points , as he drove home 10 goals and picked up 17 assists. Co-captained by Lindsten, Owens, and goalie Gerry Cummings, the team qualified for the District III play-offs once again. They dropped a very disappointing 3-1 decision to Bartlett High in the District finals, and ended their season with 14 wins and 5 losses . The varsity feeder teams continue to have outstanding success. The jayvee twelve closed their season with a record of 10-2-2. Donny Martel and George Thorng were the co- captains. Don Prentiss was his team ' s highest point getter with 15 goals and 10 assists. The freshman team completed its season with an 11-1-1 record. Steve Campbell led the team with 18 goals and 5 assists. The tri-captains were Gary Rogowski, Bill Robinson and Lenny Sears. Wrestling Quabbin ' s wrestling program is alive and flourishing . Under the guidance of Coach Jim Beschta, the team enjoyed its best season ever. They concluded their season with a 14-4 mark, and were dual meet tri-champs, of Western Mass. The J.V. wrestlers completed their season with a 4-5-1 record under co-captains Rich McDonald and Ken Goodwin. The boys accomplished more in tournament com- petition for this year than ever. In an unprecedented feat, the varsity qualified 10 of its members for the state cham- pionships in their respected weight classes. Losing only two seniors, Gordon Smith and Allen Lindsey, the team ' s future seems solid. Boys Basketball The boys varsity basketball team suffered through a tough 6-16 season in 1975-76. In this rebuilding year, the team was hurt throughout the majority of the season by being able to suit up only seven or eight players per game . The team graduates three of its best scorii and rebounding contri- butors in Scott Valley (co-captain), Keith Metcalf, Brian Young, and its playmaker Steve Bryant (co-captain). The boys junior varsity team improved greatly as the season progressed, and wound up witfi a 12-10 record. The boys were led all season long by the combined scoring of Jimmy Caruso, Jay Clark, Fran Reidy, and Glenn Stratton. The freshman basketball team compiled a 4-11 mark this year. Captained by Gary Rogowski, the team showed great determination throughout a difficult season where they lost only 4 games by a margin of more than 10 points. The junior high squad, led by scoring guns Danny Mortell and Bemie Melski, brought their season to a close with a 6-9 record, a vast improvement over their 1974-75 record, when they were 2- 14 .
