Homecoming 1985 renewed many long-time friendships and made many new ones as young and old joined in the celebration. Alumni, students, and staff all displayed a school pride that brought new meaning to the word Homecoming at Purdue. In following with Purdue Student Association's slogan. Coming Home — Out of the Blue.” new spirit chants, the first Homecoming parade in 60 years, and fourteen outstanding alumni came to Boilermaker country. Making state-wide news, fourteen astronauts returned to their alma mater, a reunion assembled by the Purdue Alumni Association. Among the alumni was Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, a 1955 graduate, and Eugene Cer-nan. the last man to walk on the moon, a 1956 grad. More astronauts have graduated from Purdue than from any other non-military institution in the country. PSA sponsored several events that kicked off the weekend’s festivities. A pep rally, including a bonfire and fireworks was held Friday night on Slay ter Hill to start the spirit rolling. Friday, October 25, was officially declared Gold Black Attack Day. Students who showed spirit by wearing gold and black clothing received special discounts from area merchants. What could be the beginning of yet another Purdue tradition was held at 9 a.m. Saturday before the game. PSA sponsored Purdue’s first Homecoming Parade since 1925. Utilizing the theme Coming Home — Out of the Blue,” the parade featured two Purdue alumni astronauts as grand marshalls, Lafayette and Purdue officials, the five Homecoming Queen finalists, and the many student organizations. Students, community, and alumni lined the streets for this unique event. The only shadow cast on this festive weekend was the score of the football game. Purdue lost 28-24 to Michigan State in the last eighty crucial seconds of the game. Michigan State had not beat- en Purdue since 1977. and the last time they beat the Boilermakers in Ross-Ade Stadium was in 1973. But as President Steven Beering said. People didn’t come back here for a score, they came back to visit the campus and to see their friends.” Besides the band’s performance and the astronauts' recognition, the half-time show also included the Queen coronation. In front of 67,000 fans in Ross-Ade Stadium. Wendy Bane, a senior representing Pi Beta Phi sorority, was crowned 1985 Purdue Homecoming Queen.
