ROTC Rangers 23 i “Russians” in Attica Ranger camp teaches tactics training ganizations for the students involved in the Armed Forces. These programs are open to everyone, but the majority of the members are in a division of ROTC. One organization in particular is the Army ROTC Rangers. The U.S. Ranger Batallion is a unique unit of the Army that is readily deployable. Fort Lewis. Washington, and Fort Stewart. Georgia, house the two advanced ranger camps. The Purdue University Ranger program worked on a much smaller scale than the U.S. Army Rangers. In March. Army ROTC rangers engaged in simulated combat at Mudlavia Springs near Attica. Indiana. “The camp was one exercise in a series of warm-ups for those attending the advanced camp at Fort Lewis,” said Sergeant First Class Robert LaFond. drill leader. The twenty-one participants were divided into two squads, the United States and the Soviet Union. Of the thirteen Americans, four lived; only two of the eight Russians managed to escape alive. This drill was part of the MOUNT training. The combat was centered around an old abandoned motel. focusing on MOUNT training. Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain, and combat near cities and buildings. Emphasis was also placed on assault, raid, and ambush techniques. Holding the camp in Attica proved to be good location for training in these areas. Another Ranger camp was held in Attica in October. The students that participated flew in helicopters for a more realistic perspective of a combat situation. The ROTC program offers many organizations for students at Purdue in addition to the Rangers. Some of the organizations are Drill Team. Rifle Pistol Team. Association of the United States Army and Pershing Rifles. Sergeant First Class LaFond felt that the campus exercises went very well and the participants benefitted greatly.” He hopes to start battles with other universities in the near future for a more competitive edge. —Stephanie Grubb A Taylor Many people think that all the Armed Forces Reserve Officer Training Corps members do is walk around in uniform and congregate in the Armory. More than just a race Side shows highlight week before Grand Prix classic The Grand Prix race climaxed a week full of partying and festivities that psyched everyone up for the BIG day. Picnics. TG’s, keg-gars. pig roasts, and bar specials were only a few ways Purdue found to kick off the greatest spectacle in college racing. “Who are you voting for? was the most popular conversation starter of the week. Twenty-eight candidates from housing units and organizations competed for the title of 1985 Purdue Grand Prix Queen. The queen candidates Cary Marsxeiak. sophomore, and Jennifer Spewak. freshman, both of Alpha Gamma Delta rejoice after learning that they placed first in the Les Filles Prix bed race. put on a fashion show in the North Union Ballroom two weeks before crowning. The purpose of the event was to expose candidates and to get the people involved. Perhaps the most candidate recognition came from the posters distributed all over campus, from fraternity houses to local drugstores. Before voting. students were spotted in front of store windows comparing candidates. On April 25. Slayter Hill was overcome with spectators cheering their favorite candidate as Annie Ross, a junior representing Alpha Chi Omega sorority, was crowned 1985 Grand Prix Queen. Glamourous Life was the theme of the Grand Prix Girl Fashion Show preceding the coronation. Twenty-five Grand Prix Girls and twenty Promoters acted as representatives for the event. Freshman Kris Jones. 1985 Grand Prix Girl. said. Grand Prix would not have been possible without the help of the Grand Prix Girls and Promoters. We did everything from coordinating events, to the fashion show, to selling programs. Highlighting the week of partying were four days of rides and games at the Grand Prix carnival. Golf, racquet-ball and tennis tournaments, and the Distance Classic included Purdue's sports enthusiasts in the activities. On race day. sprint races, a pit stop competition, and the Grand Prix parade served as opening acts for the main event. Another event preceding the race was the Les Filles Prix Bed Race. The Les Filles Prix gave Purdue women an opportunity to also be Grand Prix winners. One hundred twenty-eight teams of five girls each raced beds along the track to the theme of Rock Around the Track” in which contestants dressed as rock stars. Alpha Gamma Delta (alias The Go-Go's”) took first place based on spirit, costume, and coordination. Even without its famed race. Grand Prix week provided entertainment for all. —Julie Weltz I A.
