What’s To Come In ’89 Freshmen are people, too What’s the typical freshman stereotype? LOST? YOUNG? When asked, almost everyone has an opinion. When upperclassmen were asked what they thought about freshmen, they responded with typical answers such as: naive, inexperienced. young, overwhelmed, and impressionable. What makes students grade sophomore and higher think of these things? Partly memories of their freshman year, but mostly what they see around them. Upperclassmen tend to see freshmen as first year students who are generally unsure of themselves and inexperienced. Pam Reinking, a sophomore, claims that ‘‘freshmen can always be spotted because they never know where they are going. They hang around in small groups, afraid to venture out. Freshmen, on the other hand, don’t see themselves in the freshman stereotype. Most looked to their first year of college with anticipation. Going to a new school in a new town with a lot of different people was exciting for most freshmen. Susan Jessup. a first year student in foods and nutrition said. ‘‘It’s better than being a high school freshman.” Some activities held specifically with freshmen in mind are the ‘‘Freshman First Nighter” and the‘‘PRHC Dock Dance”. The First Nighter offers a slew of events. These include free bands, bowling, billiards, and amusement games. In addition, the Sweet Shop, Stripe Shop, and the Union Market offered specials. Also, the movie The Breakfast Club” was shown to kick off the Purdue Student Union Board film series. Although freshmen do get lost quite a bit, after a few weeks they all get the hang of it. Let’s not forget — freshmen eventually become sophomores. — Stephanie Grubb JPtwhU Steven Downing und Janelle Niemann prove that freshmen are not too shy to meet other people. Freshmen 21
