How’s your day going? Going about our average activities in an average day Were you afraid to attend a large university for fear of being “nothing but a number?” As a freshman, did you wander through a nameless crowd praying to see a familiar face? Yet. after being here for a few semesters, each of us finds our own nook, making Purdue not so huge after all. Through experiences in housing units, classes, and social activities, we find that this seemingly mammoth school is made up of many unique individuals. Nevertheless, because of the size of our student body, even the most outstanding, A favorite way to waste time is to skim through magazines at the Stewart Center candy counter well-known student can be reduced to a mere statistic. Jim Everett, star quarterback, is no more than the 6,073rd name on Purdue's registrar. As each of us goes about our typical day — going to classes, stopping for a Coke at the Sweet Shop, or reading the Exponent — we are contributing to the unique personality that makes up Purdue University. In just one average day here: Approximately 3,266 other classes are going on besides the one you’re sitting in; you buy one of 1,700 16 oz. soft drinks sold at the Sweet Shop, and are one of the average of 124 people sitting, gossiping ... and scoping; you sit among 87 others on the mall listening to Max; at least 20,000 other Exponents are read besides the one you stole from your roommate; the person of your dreams that you've been scoping out at the undergrad library is the object of one of the average 42 personals in a typical Exponent dedicated to the one I love. You most likely eat one of the 270 meals served in campus housing in one day; you are among 38 other people sleeping in the Stewart Center Lounge (at least 12 of them snoring); 2.989 others are also cramming for an exam they have that evening, spending an average of 3.5 hours studying for it; if you are into fitness, you are among the average 5,000 students who use the Co-Rec facilities each day. and perhaps are surrounded by 163 others huffing and puffing at an aerobics class (give or take the several guys that come in from the basketball court to scope); and when stopping in Triple XXX after a night of partying, you can expect to be joined by at least 23 other late-night snackers. Although we don’t realize it. every little activity the 26.250 undergraduate students on campus does constitute an important part of what makes Purdue what it is. — Julie Weltz What would Purdue Students do without the Sweet Shop to quench a student’s study break (or “gossip break”) needs?
