I26 SENIOR DIRECTORY ....... I57 ADVERTISEMENTS ....... l62 DEDICATION: ATRUE CAVAUER Purcell will certainly miss Mr. Bernie Sinchek. our Athletic Direcrorv for the past two years. Prior to serving as Athletic Director, Bernie waS Freshman footballcoacl1.varsity swimming and baseball coach. It is with deep regret that Purcell accepted the resignation of a man who did so much for the school. His teams certainly showed the Cavu alier spirit that he lived. Some of his accomplishments while at Pur- cell were the winning of the GCL. championship in football on the freshman level. He led the varsity baseball team to a G.C.L. champi- onship and the Newport Catholic Invitational baseball tournament. Bernie spent a great I4 years of time and effort at Purcell, so much that during this past season he suffered a heart attack that kept him away from school for over a month He was missed a great deal dur- ing that time, this is why we know in the coming years we will miss him even more, The Bear, as he was affectionately called. will al- ways have a soft spot in the hearts of all real Cavaliers. We can only wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors. He will best be remembered for his humor and direction in the classes of Physical Education. Mr. B Sinchek CHANGE T hose who are concerned with structure on the superatomic scale find that there is more significance and interest in the imperfections in crystals than in the monotonous perfection of crystal lattice itself, Like the biologist. the metallurgist is concerned with aggregates and assemblies in which repeated or extended irregularities in arrangements of atoms become the basis of major structural features on a large scale eventually bridging the gap between the atom and things perceptable to the human senses. Cyril Stanley Smith - i i, '7; , , f ghzguh N- I ,x mp , a . . A This world of ours is new world, in which the unity of knowledge the nature of human communities. the order of society, the order of ideas, the very notions of society and culture have Changed. and will not return to what they have been in the past, What is new is new not because it has never been there before. but because it has changed in quality , One thing that i5 new is the prevalence of newness. the changing scale and scope of change itself. SO that the years of a man's life measure not some small growth or rearrangement or moderation of what he learned In childhood. but a great upheaval. Robert O ppenheimer The face ofchange is a young one 7 and it comes in many coiors. All previous revolutions had. as their goal. the attainment of some new state of equilibrium. What we are seeing in our time is a new order of revolution, whose goal is not a new equilibrium, but social disorder itself. It is the first social recognition that continuous change itself is a form of equilibrium and that it is only in disorder that we find order. Our period demands a type of man who can restore the lost equilibrium between in ner and outer reality. This equilibrium. never static, but like reality itself. involved in continuous change, is Iikethat of a tightrope dancer who, by small adjustments, keeps a continuous balance between his being and empty space. We need a type of man who can control his own existence by the process of balancing forces often regarded as irreconcilable; man in equipoise, Siegfried Giedion And we look and behold him instead filled with imperfect virtues; infinitely childish, often admirably valiant. often touchingly kind; sitting down, amidst his momentary life, to debate of right and wrong and the attributes of deity; rising up to do battle for an egg ordie for an idea; singling out his friends and his mate with cordial affection; bringing forth in pain, rearing with Iong-suffering , . . To touch the heart of his mystery, we find in him one thought. strange to the point of lunacy; the thought of duty; the thought of something owing to himself. to his neighbor. to his God; an ideal ofdecency. to which he would rise if it were possible; a limit of shame below which, if it be possible, he will not stoop. Robert Louis Stevenson Here he comes, stumbling down his ten thousand technological years 7 the fragmented man; a thing of bits and pieces cast upon the mudflats of the 20th Century by wayward tides and waves too high This is a mosaic that walks. wearing all his yesterdays like tattoos. Little. or nothing, in all his ancient heritage fits him for this moment. And no one knows what new adventures await him now. The Whole World In His Hands Man also steps beyond the chain of ends and means that binds the world of work. in love. or when he takes a step towards the frontier of existence, deeply moved by some existential experience. for this. too. sends a shock through the world of relationships whatever the occasion may be. J. Pieper Bur innovation is more than a new method. It is a new view ofthe universe, as one of risk. rather than of chance or of certainty. It is a new view of man's role in the universe; he creates order by taking risks. And this means that innovation, rather than being an assertion of human power. is an acceptance of hum an responsibility? Cavaliers opened the season with a strong upset over Ham- ilton Badin, in Hamilton. Missing 24 points to their oppo- nents M the emphasis was on teamwork The next weekend brought an easy victory against a weak team from Walnut Hills with Purcell winning 4442. A close game against Prin- ceton saw the Cavaliers fail in the closing minutes to pull out a victory, the final score 8e8. The Big Red saw their first defeat against St. Xavier by a scoring of 24-8, but soon got on the road to victory again by edging McNick. l4-l2, in a fumble-marred contest, Terry Quinn, Don Folden, and Dan Hawthorne led the offense to an early I4-6 lead as the Cavaliers held on for the win. In their next start, the Cavaliers played one of their best games both offensively and defensively to take an 18-0 vic- tory over LaSalle. Quinn iced the games as he licked up a Folden fumble and ran 35 yards for the score. By the Newport Catholic game, however. the iniury jinx really hit the Big Red. Leading scorer and defensive signal caller Dan Hawthorne was on the sidelines tand later hos- pitalizedy along with defensive ace Joe Booker who saw very limited action in the Cavaliersi l4-8 loss to Newport. The Thoroughbreds scored twice in the second period on short runs, one score set up by a blocked punt. The Cavalier offense was completely stymied until the fourth quarter when junior quarterback Paul Smith led a TD drive sending Quinn in for the score and adding the extra points on 3 FOR J. Against Elder, the Big Red had an upset until after the final gun in weird chain of events. They took an 8-7 lead on a 63- yard drive by Folden, who accounted for all the points on superb running along with great blocking by the offensive line. He also scored later in the period on a IS-yard sprint around end. Elder scored in the fourth period. but the try for the extra points was no good as the Cavaliers held a l4-I3 edge. The difference came on the last play of the game as a Krechting pass fell incomplete on the three-yard line as time ran out. But Purcell was called for pass interference, giving the Panthers another play from the three. Halfback Larry Par- ker bulled over for the deciding points in the l9wl4 loss. In a rain-soaked contest at Bacon, the Spartans, with the help ofthree bIocked punts, shut out the Big Red, 42-0. The Spartans tallied on a 46-yard run by Cooper in the third quarter and brokethe game wide open on fourth- quarter runs of 74 and five yards by Howard and a seven- yard run by Querner. In their final game. the Cavaliers were handed a humiliat- ing 53-0 defeat by Moeller. The Crusaders offense contin- ually penetrated deep into Purcell territory as Kneipp smashed the Purcell defense with three touchdowns along with one each by Harris, Mollina and Daniels. Purcell smashed Roger Bacon by twen- ty-three points and set a school scoring record in blasting Louisville DeSales by a forty point margin. The Cavaliers also downed previously undefeated Hamilton Badin and outplayed top-rated LaSalle by ten points, Behind a thirty point performance by Fred Geraci they also defeated New- port Catholic by twenty-sevent Toward the end of the season, the Big Red also dumped six- teenth rated Louisville Flaget in a non-Ieague venture and ripped LaSalle once again to give Coach Neal Connor his one hundredth career win. Pran- ger, S.M. was asked to organize and moder- ate the staff. The first move was directed to Fr. Jaspers and Ron Rockenfield together with the Student Council, to secure the nec- essary revenue through patron and Ad drives. Enthusiasm however. never seemed to be part of the staff and production began to lag as the more definite aspects of the book were demanded. The Editors of the Cavalier took a rather disinterested view of the book as the year wore on. Other school activities occupied their time. John Tighe. the Editor-in-Chief. worked out the Ad, Faculty, Football and Basketball sections with some help from the Senior Class. The Senior re- quest that the theme be on change was recognized in the book. Since many produc- tion dates were never reaiized, the publica- tion date was pushed back into late August. At the time of Graduation, well over a hundred pages were left to the Moderator Fr. R. A few layouts and the Art work, especially the cover was the effort of B. Even with the majority liking the affairs at Bergamo, some of the things they disliked were the cur- few, the cost, and some of the talks were too long. too little recreation, and It wasn't long enough. The deeper reason for people's disinclination toward leading a contemplative existence lies. however. in the fact that action ranks so high in the value system of our culture that contemplaA tion, like all other forms of passive participation, is apt to be little appreciated. People who are not active are made to feel useless, indeed. even worthless. Charlotte Buhler Cheerleaders A lot of hard work goes into the Sports making at Pur- cell, but one important ac- tivity associated with the Sports scene is always some what pushed to the side 7 these are the devoted Cheerleaders. The Guidance Department has undergone many changes in the year and the results were felt by nearly every student at Purcell. Probably the great- est of the changes was the relocation and redecor- ation of the guidance and counseling offices. Fr. Mueller, chairman of the Guidance Department, explained that the change was made in order to provide more room for the necessary facilities, and private counseling offices. A new class ranking system was used, and also the level of the course. During the year, National Guid- ance Week was observed. The purpose was to give serious concern to future vocations. Closely relat- ed to this were the Guidance assemblies for the college-bound students. A Careers day was held in the Homerooms, and a large scaIe testing program was carried out. 82 Bro. T. Schroer. In September, when the dramatics office was opened after a year of hibernation, things began to happen. The two plays selected to produce were not coinci- dental. but meant to serve a specific purpose. The Miracle Worker proved that students from Purcell. Marian and Ursula were able to put on a serious play successfully. Anyone who saw the ,Himr'lf ll'orker could testify that it had been unforgettably done. However, few would realize the painstaking efforts that went into the actual production. Field trips were taken to Dayton and to St. Rita's School for the Deaf to actually see the blind learn- ing, working and playing in order to add realism to the play.
