Among the two thousand, five hundred, and ninety-four bishops present at the opening of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, was Archbishop Karl J. Alter, representative of the Archdiocese of Cin- cinatti. Certain differences may be noted be- tween this council and those of the past. This Ecumenical Council was convoked to renew the pastoral life of the Church, not to define a dogma, attack heresy, or formulate discipline. Never before was there an attendance of bishops of every race and color. The proceedings are beamed to countries behind the iron cur- tain. The Council intends to make contri- butions to the principles of Christian law, the basis and framework of civil, eco- . nomic, political, and social law. Its aHn is to make the clergy shine with a new holiness, to give young people sound training, to foster the social apostolate, and to nourish a deep missiohary spirit.

Dedication So that the Catholic Church might renew its inter- nal and external life during the ever changing times, Pope John XXIII announced on January 25, 1959 that the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council would open on October 11, 1962, at the center of Christendom, St, Peter's Basilica in Rome. The modern world being what it is, certain changes in the Church are inevitable: expression of doctrine, administration of sacraments, language of the Mass, arrangement of the calendar, partici- pation of the laity, all of these subjects will be dis- cussed along with suggestions submitted by one hundred and one religious Orders, Congregations and Societies.

Our Bishops ARCHBISHOP KARL J. ALTER The Cavaliers join in thanking Archbishop Karl J. Alter for his efforts in furthering Catholic education in the Archdiocese. Under his impetus a number of new high schools were built, and others enlarged. These ambitious building programs have done much to relieve crowded conditions in the schools and raise the quality of education. In addition, his Excellency has inaugurated youth clubs, and such organizations as the councils of Catholic Men, Women, and Youth have been adopted by most parishes in the Archdio- cese. By his backing of the Catholic Student's Mission Crusade and of Sodalities, he has furthered the spiritual life of his people. Presently, Archbishop Alter is working with the other Fathers of the Church in Rome at the Second Vatican Council.
