Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1963 volume:

We, the Seniors of '63, have seen the con- quering of New Fron- tiers on all fronts dur- ing our high school days. We have seen the earth orbited by astronauts and television from across the sea. We took part personally, in a move to counteract polio. But the New Fron- tiers Will not stop with our graduation for there are additional problems - to be encountered. Among their conquerors will be the Cavaliers 0f '63. John Ulrich Fr. Paul Edrich Robert Butz Roger Hines Literary Writing . Business Artists Dedication So that the Catholic Church might renew its inter- nal and external life during the ever changing times, Pope John XXIII announced on January 25, 1959 that the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council would open on October 11, 1962, at the center of Christendom, St, Peter's Basilica in Rome. The modern world being what it is, certain changes in the Church are inevitable: expression of doctrine, administration of sacraments, language of the Mass, arrangement of the calendar, partici- pation of the laity, all of these subjects will be dis- cussed along with suggestions submitted by one hundred and one religious Orders, Congregations and Societies. Among the two thousand, five hundred, and ninety-four bishops present at the opening of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, was Archbishop Karl J. Alter, representative of the Archdiocese of Cin- cinatti. Certain differences may be noted be- tween this council and those of the past. This Ecumenical Council was convoked to renew the pastoral life of the Church, not to define a dogma, attack heresy, or formulate discipline. Never before was there an attendance of bishops of every race and color. The proceedings are beamed to countries behind the iron cur- tain. The Council intends to make contri- butions to the principles of Christian law, the basis and framework of civil, eco- . nomic, political, and social law. Its aHn is to make the clergy shine with a new holiness, to give young people sound training, to foster the social apostolate, and to nourish a deep missiohary spirit. Our Bishops ARCHBISHOP KARL J. ALTER The Cavaliers join in thanking Archbishop Karl J. Alter for his efforts in furthering Catholic education in the Archdiocese. Under his impetus a number of new high schools were built, and others enlarged. These ambitious building programs have done much to relieve crowded conditions in the schools and raise the quality of education. In addition, his Excellency has inaugurated youth clubs, and such organizations as the councils of Catholic Men, Women, and Youth have been adopted by most parishes in the Archdio- cese. By his backing of the Catholic Student's Mission Crusade and of Sodalities, he has furthered the spiritual life of his people. Presently, Archbishop Alter is working with the other Fathers of the Church in Rome at the Second Vatican Council. Represent us BISHOP PAUL F. LEIBOLD BROTHER JOHN DARBY S. M. REV. FATHER JAMES M. The Purcell Mathematics Club, to a large extent, is made up of the senior students in the Advanced Placement Mathematics Program. Meetings are held twice a month to discuss important mathematical topics that are not includ- ed in the regular school curriculum. At these times discourses on such subjects as Matrix Algebra , Topology , N011- Euclidean Geometry , and Vector Anal- ysis are presented by the members. We've selected, as victim, Bob Albert. As you can see he is a very active Senior, especially at the breakfast table. Photos show Bob waking up on Monday morning, yawning, turn- ing off the alarm and rising tor going back to sleem, breakfast, coming to school on one of those Cincinnati temperate zone days, looking over the history exhibit With a few fellow students. The last two pictures show Bob doing his usual copious senior home- work, and then back to beddy bye. You'll notice we did not show him in Class, mainly be- cause Purcell had school called off this particular day because of snow. 78 79 FIELD TRIPS SCIENCE PROJECTS Purcell participated in several Art field trips. These trips included members of the Archdiocesan Art Honor Society. The trip pictured here was taken at Natural Bridge Kentucky. SPANISH CLUB Under the leadership of Mr. Jose Armas, the Spanish Club strove to further the understanding of the Spanish Language at Purcell. Topic of greatest interest at the bi-monthly meetings was the planning of the assembly of Feb. 28, at which Dr. Vega of Xavier pre sented the advantages of taking a lan- guage in college. As illustrated by its numbers, the Spanish Club is one of the more popular extra-curricular activities. Officers Heider, Worrall, and Megan prepare the next meeting with Mr. Armas. This was highlighted by capturing the Greenhills Invitational Meet and by winning the Reserve G.C.L. Championship. Leading the pack for the Cavaliers was Senior Don Moyer, who finished ninth in the Southwestern District Cross Country Championships. The only divisional record broken was by Sophomore Merwin Jones who established the Sophomore Record at I ten minutes, fifty-two seconds. The presentation of the 1963 Cava- lier was intended to be primarily a spirited production of Senior activities and school life in general. Our theme on the Ecumenical Council provided an interesting evaluative instrument for analyzing our own school situation re- garding purposes and objectives. The Seniors wish to thank the faculty, stu- dents, and parents for their cooperation in making the 1963 Cavalier an out- standing success. The co editors of the '63 Yearbook: J. Moore and R. Kahle. The marching Band performed at most of the team's games, presenting a series of half- time shows which featured a tour of European capitals. During this season, the Band revived the custom of performing at night games in a completely darkened stadium with lights attached to their hats. Our very successful Winter Concert featured the Concert Band performing several Classical and semi-Classical selections. In Feb- ruary, the Band performed at Cincinnati Gardens in the Sacred Heart Festival of Music before an audience of 3, 000 people. For the first time in our history, the Concert Band competed in the District Senior High Band Contest at Princeton High School. Certainly, this opportunity of hearing and competing with other high school bands was one of the highlights of our spring season. After the spring Variety Show, the annual Music - Art Festival saw our Concert Band continue their successes. The Band Banquet of late-May concluded the Band's activities. Bro. The members practice five days a week, each session lasting for forty-five minutes and taking place before school. This diligent work is appreciated by those groups before which the club makes guest appearances during the year. A number of school functions also command its performances, such as: The Living Rosary, The Winter Con- cert, The Spring Concert, The Opening Day Mass, and The Variety Show. It was accepted into the National Thespian League and adds this to two other affilia- tions; the National Forensic League and the Ohio Speech League. Its fall play, A Mid- summer Nights Dream, was a resSUnding success, and it expects to repeat with Harvey in the spring. Dream was put on, and Harvey will be, with a great helping hand from the Genesians, a group of Queen's Men alumni. This group gives invaluable assistance in a program instituted this year, in which performances are given for various groups and Clubs in the Cincinnati area. Newly established is a paper, The Word, which carries club news and not-ices and which is issued twice a month. Lastly, there was introduced a merit system into the club; this will be used as a basis for determining who will receive rewards at the year's end. 120 Smrveling the tailor; Stanley Steers, Battam the weaver.
