y Cavalier Code Few members of the Purcell Faculty throughout the years have exercised such an influence on the students. especially the seniors. as Monsignor August Kramer. His influence continues to be felt in the recitation of the Cavalier Code. Father Kramer was appointed Head of the Religion Department at Purcell in HP40. At that time the priests - both diocesan and Marianist - who composed the Religion Department met periodically under his chairmanship. Early in 1951 it was decided to develop a code of conduct for the students. The members of the department were asked to formulate a list of points to be included. After these were discussed. a final draft was prepared by Father Kramer and the Principal. Father Leonard Fee, S.M., who took a deep interest in this work. Purcell's CAVALIER CODE, in its ten points. keeps before the students their obligations in every aspect of their lives as Catholic leaders. When the Code was first adopted, every student was given a copy in a convenient form for carrying in his wallet. Successive issues of THE PLUME editorialized its points one after the other. Each school day began with its recitation in the home roomg it had a place in every assembly, whether a pep rally or religious or cultural meeting. More than one guest speaker was deeply impressed when the student body rose during the course of the assembly, and, as every Cavalier stood at attention. the auditorium vibrated with the powerful cadences of the Code of the Knights of the Castle. In hoc signo 1fliH.C6.S'.' In this sign thou shalt conquer! These flaming words. seen in the heavens by Constantine, inspired Brother Louis A. Weber, SM. in his design of the Cavalier Code symbol. In this emblem, always used with the Code, is the cross, sign of victory and salvationp the hand pointing to the cross is the will of Cod. the way of eternal lifeg the world is shown, and rising upon it is a sunburst -a sign of Christ. the Light of the world. Thus in symbolic form are shown the three principal 111eans by which the Cavalier lives his Code: submitting to the will of God. following the inspiration of Christ, and accepting the challenge of the cross. Intelligent-looking seniors? Sure, that's the reason for the serious study ol' the Quo Vadis pictures. O O O
