S taff Artist J Robert Inkrot. .... .... A ssociate Editor Melvin Tepe. . . .... Associate Editor NCOUNTERING the greatest difficulties ever experienced by a Senior Class at Purcell, THE CAVALIER was launched on another successful year. There was much consternation among the members of the class, but with the appointment of Edward B. Krekeler as Editor-in-Chief their worries ceased. It was through his untiring efforts, as well as those of the Associate Editors, Bob Inkrot and Melvin Tepe, that the book was a success. The Senior Class is indebted to the other members of the Staff. Jack Seuberling was responsible for the interesting personals, Gene Weber for the write-ups of the clubs, Bob O'Brien handled the activities in his usual efficient manner, Bill Long created the unique and intimate personalities, while Stan Sullivan was in charge of the Sports Department. All deserve the thanks of the Senior Class. The Business Staff, with Roger McDermott as Manager and George Comello as his able assistant, were in charge of the financial end of THE CAVALIER, and they handled it in a businesslike manner. The Faculty Advisers were the Reverend James Donnelly and Brother Thomas Dolan. FRONT ROW-G, Comello, S. Sullivan, R. Goesling, E. Krekeler lEditorl, M. Tepe, F. Schaf, R. O'Brien. Bear in mind first and foremost, the essential, then the serviceable, finally the pleasurable. Lei your decisions be clear- cut and resolute! Then there are both athletic and scholastic interests to appeal to many more. Language clubs, literary groups, social activi- ties and athletic teams form the nu- cleus ot after-school activity life. These various interests comprise that intangible something, known as School Spirit. Cooperation has been the keynote in the success ot these extra- curric- ular activities. Through the har- monious relations existing between students and Faculty, the success ot these clubs has spread the name and tame of the Cavalier throughout our fair city. THE BAND The roll of the drums! The blare of the trumpets! The roar of the standsl Purcell's Band is here! Headed by Joe Byrne, the premiere band leader of Purcell, proudly strutting down the murky green of the football field, the Band, under the able direction of C A V A L I E R S Brother Schneider, does its act. Inspiring in its crimson and Q N gold uniforms, exultant over the prospects of a future victory on P A R A D E the gridiron, it instills in the proud cohorts of Purcell a feeling ot enthusiasm and pride. At the football games, at the Holy Name Rally, at the Double-Header Basketball Game, and at the Oratorical Contest, the Band gave a creditable account of itself. ' The Band, through graduation, loses the following members: J. Byrne, R. Bardon, H. Burdick, H. Weikel, J. Blank, M. Tepe, V. Nieporte, R. Smith, G. Sharkey and J. Joseph. l'u51.' Gaesler. Howard Copfer lLord Fancourt Babberlyl, who played the leading role in Charley's Aunt, made the show a dramatic success. His impersonation of the substitute Charley's Aunt was one of the best bits of acting seen on local amateur stages. The two college students, Neal Faessler Hack Chesneyl and James Crosby fCharley Wyke- CHARLEY'S AUNT haml, portrayed the lives of Oxford students with professional skill. Their girl friends, Joe Kapter fMiss Verdunl and Ray Birkmeyer lMiss Spettiguel, played their parts with the natural ease that shows much practice. .lake Malone fSir Francis Chesneyl impersonated a real father, while Joe Byrne fStephen Spettiguel proved a very mean uncle. Some thought that Roger McDermott fBrassettl stole the show with his marvelous interpretation of the wise but humorous butler. Bob O'Brien fFarmerl, .lack Flynn fMiss Delahayl, Walter Adelsperger lDonna Lucia D'Alvadorezl and .lack Shea fMaudl were valuable assets to both the sincere and humorous sides ot the play. Senior members ot the cast are: Howard Copier, .loe Byrne, Jack Malone, Roger McDermott, Bob O'Brien, Stage Managers, Tom Martin and Joe Cregan, The success of Charley's Aunt is due chiefly to the untiring efforts ot Father Seitz and his able assistant, Brother Rus. Through his unfailing interest and his ability to select an all-star cast, Father Seitz has again presented a hit. THE CAVALIER FRONT ROW - P. Morand, C. McGonagle, W. Hall, R. Cassidy, REAR ROW - W. Kleiman, W. Molloy. Led by Charles Hughes, untiring Editor-in-Chief, and his versatile associate, Larry Mongan, the Plume Staff published five creditable issues of the school publication. One more step in the gradual metamorphosis, which must accompany every growing thing, was the adoption ot a very striking color design, created by .lack Kohlman. One of the most interesting departments was the Sports Section, successfully handled by Melvin Tepe and Stanley Sullivan. Bob O'Brien presented the school activities in a most clear and concise fashion, while Bill Baum, assisted by his four representatives, H. Barnhorst, R. Stacey, T. Mongan and F. Sahlfield, took care of the class news in an entirely refreshing and novel style. Jack Rittmeyer made the most ot his opportunities as Humor Editor, and Bob Zwinak was a most effective middle-man for the Library news. The circulation department was handled very satis- factorily by Pat Morand. To those mentioned above must be added all the writers who were an integral part of the Plume, and likewise, Brother Thomas Dolan, faculty adviser, without whose efforts the Plume would not have been such a praiseworthy publication. Under the personal supervision of Brother Lekan, the Library enjoyed one of its most successful seasons. Many new books, both novels and references, were added to the ever-increasing stock of book lore. Assisting Brother Lekan were: Charles McGonegle, who for four years has given his time to the betterment of the Library, Wessley Hall, Richard Logan, Pat Morand, Dick Cassady, Thomas Molloy and William Kleiman. It is all the difference between supreme excellence and mediocrity. This past year saw an overflow of spirit which the school has never before experienced. May all the underclassmen continue to tan this flame and keep it burning. In the next two or three years, Purcell will be carried on the crest of this spirit to untold heights. TI-IE CAVALIER OUR HERITAGE TO YOU With the departure of the Class of '36, the forging ot one more link in the chain which Purcell graduates have been forming since the school began, is com- pleted. We leave but one heritage to the underclass- men: the typical Purcell Spirit-a gift whose value is inestimable, a gift which braces up the mind and lifts up the heart. Cherish and foster it so that when the time comes, you too may be able to pass it on, not diminished, but increased in value. TOP ROW-P. Devaney, P. Thompson, T. Rusche, W. Shaw, J. Schmidts, R. Page I'-0l'l-l 0AJl.'l Page Fo rtv-two THE CAVALIER T ll LET! C Bro. William L. Schroeder Paul D. Cain REVIEW OF THE SPORT SEASON Under Coach Chip Cain, the sports season was again a success. Football, Basketball and Baseball alike, all enjoyed a successful year. Though some may say that there could have been more victories, the Purcell teams finished second in football and tied for first in basketball. In finishing second in the football race, the Cavaliers won four games, lost five and tied one. This is not a bad record. One of the high spots of the football season was the renewal of relations with Norwood High School. Though turned back, the Cavaliers insured peaceful games with the Indians in future years. The basketball team enoyed an even more successful season. It ended in a tie for first place with the Elder Panthers. The Cavaliers showed real playing in amassing fourteen victories and suffering only four defeats. Through graduation, the football team loses eleven men, while the basketball team loses only two. Coach Cain expresses firm belief that he will be able to fill the vacancies, and wishes the departing Seniors all the luck in the world. The Seniors pass this luck on to the Captains of next year's teams, and hope that they also will enjoy successful seasons. THE CAVALIER Zag FRONT ROW-R. Moorman, J. Glandort, A. Oueenan, J. Graduation had left but five seasoned players. Coach Cain faced the job of building an entire new back- field. He did not hesitate, but went directly to work. He took men from the line, tested them in the backfield, and finally hit on a combination which he thought would do the trick. His next job was the line, which he molded from the little material he had left from last year, and from the new material which had reported for practice. With Captain Brancaccio in the lead, the 1935 edition of Purcell's Football Team took to the field, only to find themselves buffeted about at the hands of their opponents. They found experience costs a little more than they had bargained for. Lockland, Hamilton Public, Wood- ward, Norwood, all had their turns at beating back the Cavaliers. But while they were being so rudely treated, they were slowly blossoming into a team of high caliber. They learned the ways of the game through the most thorough method, the school of Experience. They were slowly being brought into shape for the important games, the League games. Then the Cavaliers turned on the steam. In the first game, Elder looked easy when the Cavaliers pushed over a touchdown in the opening minutes. But Elder was not to be denied, and came back to defeat Purcell 20-7. Decided to make a good showing, the Cavaliers went into the Armistice Day double-header with grim determination. They faced the Conquerors of Xavier, and defeated them in true Cavalier style, 7-0. Their old rivals, Roger Bacon, were next on the schedule. In one of the most fantastic games of the season, marked by long runs, the Cavaliers stopped the Spartan onslaught by trouncing them 20-18. A 90-yard run and another of 85 yards featured this game. Newport Catholic was an easy 26-O victory. And so the season was brought to a close. On that day eleven men brought to a close their football careers in high school. It was the last time that Captain Brancaccio would don the Crimson and Gold. For four years he had been a sturdy guard and was now to write finis to his high school days. Louis Lammert, who had carried the burden of quarterback for his team, was also hanging up his cleats. The halfbacks, R. Moorman and J. Glandorf, Ned Donovan and Dick Kelly, the fullbacks, R. Piening, O. Clements and S. Flick, the ends, the tackles, E. Romes and J. Trimpe-all were playing their last game as Cavaliers. All were donning the Crimson and Gold for the last time. But then came another memorable Football Banquet . . . the meal, the awarding of letters, the speech-making, the glamor. And underneath it all was the realization that it was their last act as members of the 1935 football team. Though their hearts filled with pride as they received their monograms, their eyes filled with tears. It was the last act as members of the football team. And now they say their final farewell, wishing Co-Captains Oueenan and Achten and the rest of their cohorts the heartiest of best wishes for another year as successful as this ending one. The Purcell Cavaliers opened the 1935-36 season by losing a close battle with the Dayton fKy.l Green Devils, by the score of 17-22. The first victim of the Cavaliers was the highly touted Woodward High five. The Public High School Champions were defeated by the score of 26-17. Kolkmeyer and Stagge played a brilliant game on the defense, as well as on the offense. The Crimson and Gold then traveled to Hamilton to meet Hamilton Catholic High, and returned with a 17-13 victory. During the Christmas holidays, the Cavaliers nosed out the Alumni by the score 38-37. The warriors of Chippy Cain then proceeded to defeat Xavier in the round robin affair at Xavier Field House by a score of 23-20. The Cain-men made their league debut with a 27-21 victory over the St. Xavier Laub-men. The Cavaliers were never approached by the Conquerors, and thus swept to an easy victory. Brancaccio starred on the defense and had no rival for the scoring honors. Purcell next invaded Norwood, where it suffered defeat in the closing minutes of play. Prom the very start, the game was fast, with the lead see-sawing, and in the final seconds went to the Indians, 27-30. Stagge proved the star of the game with 13 markers to his credit. The Crimson and Gold, on the following evening, journeyed to Hamilton, where it was set back by a powerful Hamilton Public quintet to the tune of 17-38. Purcell was the victim of the Elder Panthers in a hard-fought contest at the latter's band-box gym. The Cavaliers were never defeated until the referee blew the final whistle, ending the game in the favor of Elder, 33-31. The packed house was frequently thrilled with the pivot shots of the Purcell center, Kolkmeyer. The Purcell hoopmen then proceeded to break their losing streak by winning from the strong Roger Bacon team, 29-27. The Cavaliers found little trouble in preventing a late Spartan uprising. Brancaccio's passing and 11 points were the highlights of the game. Next on the schedule was the Newport Catholic Five, a team easily subdued by the strong Purcell defense. The final score was 35-12, with Co-Captain Monahan and the tall guard Stagge blazing the way. Our Boys started on their second round in the League by vanquishing the Conquerors for the third time, by the score 26-23. Co-Captain Brancaccio again proved himself outstanding with his remarkable play, both on the defense and the offense. Next to fall before the onslaught of the Purcell five was the Elder quintet, by the score 27-18. Amorini gave the Cavaliers their margin of victory by dropping in 9 points in rapid succession. Purcell then traveled to Newport and found little difficulty in defeating the Newport Catholic lads. Purcell was next the host to Lebanon. The Lebanon boys proved an easy victory for xPurcell, who held the opponents to four field goals. The final score was 29-19, with Brancaccio and Stagge starring on the defense and offense, respectively. The Cavaliers, playing the last game on their home floor, trounced the Holmes High Basketeers 42-27. Brancaccio and Kolkmeyer each had 11 points for the winners. Purcell traveled to Springfield to defeat their hosts 35-32. Roger Bacon proved to be much harder to contend with than in their first encounter. The Spartans defeated the Cavaliers 34-18 in the last game of the scheduled season. TOURNAMENT The Purcell five defeated Hughes High at the University of Cincinnati gym by the score of 32-24. The Big Red of Hughes was no match for the Cavaliers in the second half of the contest and never extended the Crimson and Gold. Kolkmeyer scored 12 points for the Cavaliers. Walnut Hills was the next team for the Cavaliers, and were trounced 40-9. The Eagles proved to be little opposition for the Purcell team. In the third round, Purcell met their old rivals from Price Hill, but the Co-Champs defeated the Cavaliers with little trouble. Thus ended a successful campaign, with 15 victories and 6 defeats. Having few returning letter-men, Chip has found this a difficult assignment, but he has succeeded in turning out a team with plenty of batting power. Its own power has made the team think seriously of annexing the Greater Cincinnati High School Title. The Cavaliers are led by the Captain and left-fielder, Bernie Brancaccio, who has been show- ing splendid form both afield and at the plate. The veteran Rodney Smith has been sharing the pitching burden with Ralph Achten, and is expected to win many games this season. Catcher Tom Dwyer has been doing yeoman service behind the plate, while Jerry Trimpe's big bat has showed the way home to many a base-runner. Bob Piening handles himself like another Bill Terry at first, and is hitting about as well as Terry. Bob Monahan is back again, and has proved a world of strength in the infield. Buddie Hundermer, Joe Geraci and John Kindel round out the remainder of the veterans. To date, Purcell has played five games, winning three and losing two. In league contests, the team has beaten St. Xavier, but has lost to Roger Bacon. Norwood holds a no-hit game over Purcell, but Western Hills and Reading proved easy victories. Seven games remain on the schedule. The Cavaliers have yet to meet the league oppo- nents, Colerain, Holy Cross and Walnut Hills. They are hoping to take these games in true Cavalier style, and hang up their spikes with another League Championship. Pagr' Forty-.wr en THE CAVALIER l G FIRST ROW-E. Combs, J. Schmidts, J. Shea, R. His good sportsmanship and love of athletics make Branny a born leader. He has 12 letters to his credit and a record of being the only Purcell athlete to par- ticipate in every football game with the excep- tion of the Norwood game during his four years. His beautiful spirals, accurate shooting, and home runs rove his ability as an athlete. . EDITOR-IN-CHIEF We introduce a saga- cious and an all-around fellow in Edward Krek- eler, our noble Editor-in- Chief. His journalistic ettorts have been recog- nized throughout the school. He has given his time and talents to pre- sent a superb annual in the Cavalier of '36, His appointment as Editor did not come as a surprise to the Staff. Ed has many admirable qualities, which would cover a page, but among these his sincerity stands 0111. Page Fifty CLASS PRESIDENT A boy who has been a leader from the earliest days was destined to be- come Senior Class Presi- dent. Melvin Tepe has proven to us that he is capable and worthy of holding the highest honor conferred upon any member of the class. Top's genial manner, fine personality and elo- quence are essential to a leader. He has dis- tinguished himself in the activities of the school. He leaves Purcell a friend of students and Faculty alike. DRUM MAJOR .gi r ,k.- Joseph Byrne is engaged - in many of the leading activities of the school, his most prominent posi- tion being that of Drum Major. Many students envy Joe this job, par- ticularly the Freshmen. During the past two years he has convinced us that he can strut his stuff. He has thrown the baton over the goal posts to the applause of the crowd. Joe will be mighty hard to replace next year, on and off the field. JOE BYRNE Drum Major PAPER DRIVE WINNER Bertrand Daumeyer calls our attention to the beau- titul and peaceful spot ot Deer Park every year during the Paper Drive. The Chinese babies have a real friend in Bert. He canvasses Deer Park, Sil- verton and outlying com- munities. Three consecu- tive years Bert has been presented with first prize. Now that Bert graduates this year, some of the other leading students will have a chance. THE CAVALIER PERSONALITIES DRAMATIST Charley's Aunt will be talked about long after we have left these sacred halls. Howard Copfer's portrayal of Charley's Aunt was nothing short of excellent. His humor- ous lines and movements kept the audience in stitches throughout the play. He has been a Purcell Player, but never before has he given such a superb perform- ance. ORATOR Gentleman Bob is undoubtedly one of the most liked fel- lows around Pur- cell. He is an ex- cellent student, and his genial person- ality has made him a host of friends. His success reached its culmination w h e n h e w a s awarded first honors in the Ora- torical Contest. A true gentleman and scholar, he departs from Purcell with the best wishes of everyone. C. S. M. C. PRESIDENT The untiring efforts of George Hessler have won for him the coveted prize -namely, the Paladin Jewel. He has taken an active interest in the Crusade during his four years. He has served will- ingly on almost every , committee in the city. He succeeded to the Presi- dency of the Purcell Unit last Fall, and has been quite proficient in all his duties. TRACK CAPTAIN N e d Donovan performs every task that he un- dertakes with a g r e at d e al of vigor and enthu- siasm. Ned's skill and friendliness have won for him the honor to Cap- tain the Track Team. Judging from his speed last Fall, he still has plenty left for the relay. We know that he will be largely instrumental in Purcell winning the championship of the Greater Cincinnati High School League. Ned will be missed next year by Chip and all of the students. HONOR STUDENT In Charles Hughes we get a glimpse of the per- fect Honor Student. For four years his average has never been below 98, a record which perhaps no one in the history of the school has achieved. Charlie is also Editor of the Plume. His articles and editorials have been read with interest by all the students. We are assured that Charlie will win first honors in his study of journalism next Fall. BASKETBALL CO-CAPTAIN Bob Monahan blossomed forth as a real find in his Freshman year. This di- minutive lad amazed Chip by his accurate shooting and brilliant floor work during the first season. He played many games in his Junior year as a seasoned player. He was elected Co-Captain with Branny to pilot the team in his Senior year. Bob gave a great account of himself and played fine ball throughout the season. BOB MONAHAN, Forward Page Fifty-one THE CAVALIER FRENCH AND GERMAN CLUBS These two clubs were formed this year and were enthusiastically received by interested language students. Being newly formed, their membership lists were curtailed by other and more solidly implanted activities. They have, however, found time to open a correspondence with various French and German students abroad. The Faculty Advisers are: French, Brother Rus, German, Brother Feldmeier. ART CLUB What student was not spurred on to greater deeds by the many posters that decorated the halls throughout the year? The Art Club has always held its place firmly in the list of Purcell's Clubs by means of these posters. Whenever there was an important drive, it was See Brother Thomas Burke and have the Art Club draw some posters. They lived up to their previous reputation, and in many cases bettered it. Its officers include: R. Wille, President, R. Zwinak, Vice-President, H. Pardiac, Secre- tary, L. Pohl, Manager. - STAMP CLUB One of the least ostentatious, yet one of the hardwest working clubs is the Stamp Club. Its importance can be judged by a perusal of its list of activities, which include stamp trading, discussion of new stamps, and exhibition of recent acquisitions. One of the most important activities of the Club is the collection of stamps for various needy missions. Its officers are: A. Sanger, President, R. Birkmeyer, Vice- President, R. Cundall, Secretary. Brother Rus is the Faculty Adviser. RADIO CLUB The Radio Club is the newest club at Purcell. There have been other attempts to form a Radio Club, but this is the most successful attempt. The Club is starting from the bottom, and its essential purpose is to teach the members how to build and understand radios. With this start, a long and brilliant career can be anticipated, for it can be considered another case of The last shall be first. Officers of the club are: G. Hessler, Presi- dent, G. Berens, Manager, R. Bentley, Manager, H. Schoettlekotte, Secretary. Brother Schenkel is the Faculty Adviser. Page Fifty two THE ORCHESTRA Under the efficient direction of Brother Schneider, Purcell's musical member of the Faculty, the Orchestra again rose to undreamed- of prominence. Starting late in the season proved no drawback to the musicians, and they were a valuable asset to the play. Rendering many beautiful arias, it outdid itself in their presentation. Graduation will also weaken the Orchestra. Such prominent musicians as V. Monteliciano, C. Hughes, G. Sharkey, R. Smith, J. Joseph and J. Blank will be lost to the Orchestra. These men of the last four years can view proudly their exploits. They have been members of one of Purcell's greatest organizations. BIO CLUB The Bio Club is one of our oldest and most firmly established organizations. Under the direction of Brother Joly, this club has made Purcell bugology -conscious by means of its activities in and around school. Of interest to the club members themselves are the intra-club activities, which include talks and field trips to collect specimens for the laboratory. Officers include: W. Gessing, President, R. Zwinak, Vice-President, F. Morand, Secre- tary, L. Mongan, Treasurer. CHOIR Every school of importance has a Choir or Glee Club. Purcell is no exception. Its choir can compete with the best in the city and still carry off honors. John J. Fehring, one of the city's foremost directors, is in charge, assisted by Brother Schneider. The Purcell Choir has taken part in such celebrated affairs as the May Festival, spon- sored by the Most Reverend Archbishop, sing- ing an oratorio, the Dream of Gerontius by Elgar, and Martin G. Dumler's Mass. ENGLISH CLUB The chief work of the English Club is the publishing of the Plumette. This publication is not a competitor of the Plume, but is a supple- mentary work, which helps to carry on the literary activities undertaken at Purcell. An- other activity of the club is an extensive study of famous contemporary American authors. Father James Donnelly is the Faculty Adviser. American Oil Pump and Tank Co.
