Page Twenty-fou I' ART A thing of beauty is a joy forever: Its Ioueliness increases: it will never Pass into nothingnessg but still will keep A bower quiet for us, and a sleep Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing. --KEATS. The Culture ot the Old World, the grace and charm ot its Art Centers, re- tlecting the heritage ot centuries, will ever remain its greatest claim to prominence in the World ot Beauty. Cincinnati likewise, tully merits the same renown which distinguishes the capitals ot Europe: tor she, too, serves as the center ot culture tor a vast metropolitan area. Although she may not equal the unrivaled prestige and artistic advancement ot cities in which art thrived tor centuries betore the discovery ot America, The Queen City may well be proud ot her reputation as a patron ot art. Her institutions, her priceless collections and her noted artists, as well as art lovers have won tor her a lasting recognition. The Cincinnati Art Museum possesses one ot the world's tinest collections ot paintings. lt is not only a shrine ot the great treasures ot art, but it is, as well, an academy tor the development ot artistic talent. Under the direction ot Mr. Walter Siple, the Institution has become one ot the tinest in the country. Situated upon one ot the seven hills ot the Queen City, and towering maiestically over the very heart ot the city, this imposing temple represents the lotty ideals ot Cincinnati, the triumph ot the higher things ot lite over the commonplace. Not tar distant trom the Museum, in quaint old Mt. Adams is located the world- tamous Rookwood Pottery, where, in a quiet, peacetul atmosphere, artists produce masterpieces in clay. Because the work ot the artist and the crattsman has pre- cedence over modern principles ot production, Rockwood represents the highest de- velopment ot Ceramics. It has carried the name ot Cincinnati to the tour corners ot the earth. Recently, Cincinnati acquired a notable addition to its institutions ot art. The late Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Tatt generously bequeathed their beautitul residence and their priceless collection ot works to the city tor the purpose ot establishing a public museum. Through the etiorts ot the Cincinnati Institute ot Eine Arts, the task ot tounding the Tatt Museum was accomplished. The splendid co-operation ot all involved in this undertaking, reflected the spirit which won tor the city the epithet. Art-Loving Cincinnati. To the Queen City belongs the honor ot having produced Frank Duveneck, the greatest ot American painters and Clement Barnhorn, the peer ot American sculptors. These great artists will always be identitied with Cincinnati. Edward T. Hurley, Paul Ashbrook, John Dee Wareham, H. H. Wessel, John Weis, Dixie Selden, W. T. Hentschel, Dr. Grace McCann, Miss Cherry Greve, and Miss Mary Alexander are some ot the more prominent tigures in art circles in the city. To these institutions and their artists, Cincinnati owes her most cherished pos- session, her high position in the world ot art. They have placed her side by side with London, Paris, Rome, and other great art centers ot Europe. Ot course, the artistic development ot Cincinnati has not reached the high state in which it is tound in these tamous cities, yet the Queen City has led the trend ot a youthtul and material nation, to art and beauty. Mindtul ot their tame as an art-loving people, the advancement and perpetuation ot art will always be the greatest interest ot the people ot Cincinnati.
