Football The Pulaski High School Orioles, boasfing one of The beTTer Teams in SouThwesT Virginia, compleTed iTs Ten game schedule wiTh a season record of five wins and five losses. ln Their opening encounfer, The Orioles handed The Dublin Dukes a 26-6 defeaT. The Team showed plenTy of power and gave Coach J. Ward Long an idea of how The Team would shape up. WiTh one win under Their belTs, The orange- and-black Tangled wiTh Chrisfiansburg on The Calfee Park gridiron The following Friday nighT. Displaying mosT of Their power in The firsT half, They racked up a 26 poinT lead by half-Time. Buddy RaTcliffe boosTed his scoring ToTal To four Touchdowns for The season by adding The firsT and final markers. The final Tally was 32-6, giving The birds Two disTricT wins. Taking To The road for The firsT Time, The Orioles rolled over The Blacksburg Indians aT Virginia Tech's Miles Sfadium. Affer a Blacks- burg score in The TirsT quarTer. The Pulaski boys. lead by Two agressive backs, T. J. Duncan and Buddy RaTcliffe, roared back wiTh four sTraighT Touchdowns To clinch The game, 24-I4. N Unable To peneTraTe The superior line of The William Fleming Colonels, The Orioles were compleTely ouTclassed To The Tune of 4l-7. Joe Helvey seemed To be The only Pulaski back who MABRY, Capfain could gain any ground. Dick Page displayed some excellenT defensive play, several Times dropping The Fleming ball carrier before he had reached The line of scrimmage. The once-defeaTed Orioles came ouT on Top in The sTaTisTics buT noT on The scoreboard when They losT a Thriller To The Radford BobcaTs. The Radford field was ankle-deep wiTh mud, making fooTing slippery and uncerfain. AfTer The Orioles had scored 6 poinTs in T-he firsT quarfer, Radford came back in The fourTh wi+h a six-poinTer plus The deciding exTra poinf, leaving The Orioles on The shorT end of a 7-6 score. The following Friday nighf, The Orioles came from behind To defeaf The Narrows Green Wave 24-I3 aT Ragsdale Field. AlThough The orange- and-black goT back info The win column, T. J. Duncan, shifTy Oriole halfback, was losT for The remainder of The season due To a leg iniury in The Third quarTer. AT Marfinsville, The Pulaski eleven was rid- dled by a powerful aTTack which The birds could noT maTch. The final score read 33-O. Affer oufplaying a scrappy Pearisburg Team, The Orioles found The score deadlocked aT 6-6. WiTh only Two minuTes lefT To play, Coach Long, as a lasT resorT, senT in OTis Ouesenberry, who kicked a beaufiful 30-yard field goal To give Pulaski a 9-6 edge. BUT This I3-O lead was surpassed by The Maroon Tide and Tinally melTed inTo a I9-I3 deTeaT Tor The Orioles. WyTheville High School, boasTing one oT The besT Teams in Their hisTory, invaded CalTee Park To baTTle Tor The championship cup which is awarded To The winning Team each year. AT TirsT, The sTruggle was nip-and-Tuck, buT aTTer The TirsT quarTer, iT was WyTheville all The way. WyTheville's excellenT passing was largely re- sponsible Tor The 29-O Tally which gave Them The DisTricT Championship. AT The end oT The '47 season a TooTball banqueT was given To The players by The Lions Club and awards were presenTed To The mosT ouTsTanding players oT The year by The local merchanTs. The bangueT was Thoroughly enioyed by The players and aTTerwards The Tollowing awards were made: Buddy RaTcliTTe, mosT poinTs scored: Don Mabry, besT down Tield blocker: OTis Ouesenberry, Tield goal: French Ellis, besT all-round linesman: and T. J. Duncan, mosT valuable back. We, The sTudenT body, have been iusTly proud oT our TooTball Team This year. They have shown Tine spiriT and good Team-play which, in The Tinal analysis, is iusT as imporTanT as being a winning Team. HELVEY B. KING Junior Varsity Football The Pulaski Oriole Junior VarsiTy played Their TirsT game oT The season wiTh The Radford BobkiTTens aT RadTord. The hard-ToughT con- TesT ended in a O-O Tie. Doug Divers, promising Oriole Tullback, and OTis Ouesenberry did mosT oT The ball carrying, while Doug BraTTon con- necTed Tor several long passes. ln The reTurn maTch on Their home Tield, The Jayvees Tared much beTTer by licking Radford 25-6. BraTTon and Dean Carper led in The scoring behind good line play Trom The whole Torward wall.
