This squad soon gained experience under The able TuToring oT Their coach. AlThough The J.V.'s did noT have an opporTuniTy To play any regular games, They proved Their worTh by providing spiriTed opposiTion Tor The VarsiTy in scrimmage. They soon showed ThaT They had The abiliTy and The spiriT To Take Their places on The VarsiTy squad nexT year. ln The years To come mosT oT The J.V.'s will be on The VarsiTy eleven. I E FORTY-NI N E DespiTe a deTeaT aT The hands OT The lviarTinsville Bulldogs in The season's opener, The Orioles, under The leadership oT Co-CapTains ArTrip and Haislip conTinued un- daunTed in a season which included numerous brillianT vicTories and only one oTher loss. This Tine season was capped by a I4-6 vicTory over Their arch-rival, WyTheville: This gained Tor Them The prized vicTory cup Tor The nexT year. These boys conTinued in winning Torm ThrOughOuT The season, including in Their accomplishmenTs, a Thrilling lasT-minuTe deTeaT OT a big ChrisTiansburg quinT. ln spiTe OT war condiTiOns which cuT down The schedule a greaT deal, we were able To have The disTricT class B TournamenT here March 5 and 6. Our baske+baII players made Things compleTe by winning The TournamenT wifh successive vicTories over Blacksburg and William Fleming. The TournamenT wenT OTT wiThouT a hiTch, and our school received many cOmplimenTs On boTh The baskeTball Team and The way ThaT The evenT was handled. The only loss suTTered by our Team was in a posT-season game Tor The halT-sTaTe championship. ATTer Trailing Tor mOsT OT The game Graham High OT BlueTield sank Two quick baskeTs in The closing minuTes and succeeded in holding The Orioles To only one in This Time.
