Going into the season lacking experience, the 1954 Pulaski football team finished in eighth place
with a record of 3-4-1.
Meeting Tech in the first game of the season, the Ramblers were jolted by Tech's swift back-
field and defensive line, 19-0. At times the Ramblers moved the ball, but then a fumble would prove
costly. Against Juneau the Ramblers played to a scoreless tie. Both teams showed up well on defense.
In the homecoming game, the Ramblers were defeated by a powerful Washington eleven, 20-0.
On several occasions Dick Steuber's punting put the Purgolders deep in their own territory.
South Division, co-champs with Tech and Washington, came from behind to squeeze past Pulaski,
12-7. The Ramblers had the satisfaction of scoring their first touchdown. This was on an eight yard
pass from George Cwiklowski to end Dick Splinter. The Ramblers showed an exhibition of spirit by
narrowly missing on potential touchdown passes in the closing minutes.
The Ramblers bounced back to beat East, 20-13. An oddity of two fifty-seven yard runs by George
Cwiklowski and Fred Unger helped the cause. Dick Steuber kicked two conversions.
Having tasted victory, the Ramblers then set down Lincoln, 21-12. Alert defensive play spear-

headed the Rambler attack. Jim Merritt recovered a fumble in mid-air and ran five yards to score.
Later Merritt charged through Lincolnls line and blocked a punt on the four, which Jim Napral re-
covered. jerry Andraszczyk scored over right tackle. Dick Steuber intercepted a pass in the flat and
raced 15 yards to score. Steuber made all three conversions.
A fine crowd turned out at North Stadium to see the Ramblers beat Custer, 14-12. Trailing by
a 12-7 margin with four minutes left to play, Pulaski switched to spread formation and marched sixty-
eight yards to score, the climax being a twenty-three yard pass from George Cwiklowski to Marvin
Clement with only 55 seconds to play. Dick Steuber's two conversions provided the margin of victory.
In the last game of the season the Ramblers were beaten by Bay View, 35-6. Leading by one
point at half-time, the Redcats scored four times in the second half to turn the game into a rout. The
Ramblers scored first on a 39 yard march, Fred Unger capping the drive with a four-yard plunge. From
then on the Ramblers could not cope with the Redcat passing attack. As a result of the loss, Pulaski had
to relinquish possession of the famed wooden football.
One of our boys, jim Merritt, was honored by being chosen on the all-city second team.
Although this season was not too successful, we are proud of our team. With the experience
gained by the younger players we expect Pulaski will be well represented next year.
