Screen '79 1 APOCALYPSE NOW Like the Vietnam war, Francis Coppola's opus has a murky, unsatisfying plot, but it is haunt- ing, often beautiful and lives up to most of its hype. 2 THE BLACK STALLION It proves Hollywood can still do a simple boy-meets-horse film that's spirited and lovely to see. 3 BREAKING AWAY Though growing up is hard to do, especially for townies in Bloomington, Ind., home of the state university, this modest film makes watching the struggle a glowing experience. 4 THE CHINA SYNDROME Hah, they said. Another shrill Jane Fonda crusade, they said. Then came Three Mile Island. 5 ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ Just as it seemed that Clint East- wood was nothing but bullets, roadblocks and fists, he delivers a stark thriller of some distinc- tion. 6 KRAMER VS. KRAMER Meryl Streep vs. Dustin Hoffman in an achingly accurate child custody battle. As actors, both win. 7 LA CAGE AUX FOLLES lt's a mid-life crisis en francais involving a couple of aging gays in a bittersweet comedy. 8 LIFE OF BRIAN Ye of great humor or little faith will enjoy this satire of a reluc- tant savior, but don't forgive the Monty Pythonitesg they knew exactly what they were doing. 9 MANHATTAN The city everyone loves to hate never looked so lovely, neurotic or fascinating as in Woody Allen's comic portrait, an Interi- ors that works. 10 THE ROSE By any other name - such as The Captivating Debut of Bette Midler as a Joplinesque Singer - it would be as sweet. Pages '79 1 LAUREN BACALL BY MYSELF by Lauren Bacall A nice Jewish girl grew up to be a famous model and movie star, marry Humphrey Bogart and write Cwithout a ghostj this pun- gent, unselfconscious autobiography. 2 FUNGUS THE BOGEYMAN by Raymond Briggs An unlikely hero, a trollish do-badder who likes to wear soggy clothes, surfaces in this cartoon saga appealing to the perverse in kids -- or adults. 3 THE CULTURE OF NARCISSIM by Christopher Lasch The Me Dec- ade gets its comeuppance in a hard- to-read, hard-to-dismiss exploration of society's selfish new mind-set. 4 THE RISE OF THEODORE ROOSE- VELT by Edmund Morris We won't have TR's canal much longer, but his ambition, verve and unexcelled egocentricity live in an uncompromising biography. 5 THE POPE OF GREENWICH VIL- LAGE by Vincent Patrick it's only crime fic- tion, only about scruffy New York types, only a terrific first novel. 6 SOPHIE'S CHOICE by William Styron in potent prose, Styron spares neither his heroine fwho survived the Holocaustj nor himself, vaguely disguised as the protagonist. 7 THE MEDUSA AND THE SNAIL by Lewis Thomas His essay subjects range from warts to dying with calm, and this research biologist always has something fresh to contribute. 8 SERPENTINE by Thomas Thompson The author of Blood and Money establishes himself as the best crime writer in the busi- ness with this chilling chronicle of an alleged Asian killer who preyed on tourists. 9 BIRDY by William Wharton A young man obsessed with our feathered friends flies, literally and figuratively, in the year's most original fiction. 10 THE DUKE OF DECEPTION by Geoffrey Wolff the literary critic's confessional autobiography reveals his late father as a detestable con man, the implications about chiId-par- ent relations go far behond his family. Song '79 1 ROSANNE CASH Roseanne Cash Johnny's 24- year old daughter isn't just cash- ing in on the name. Hers is per- haps '79's most promising coun- try-oriented debut LP. 2 SLOWTRAIN COMING Bob Dylan His new faith and gritty, soulful sound prove Jesus music needn't wear white bucks. 3 OFF THE WALL Michael Jackson Having sur- vived The Wiz, he's rocking on solo and spectacularly so, now its Michael and the Jackson our. 4 LUCKY SEVEN Bob James The fussy keyboard man and his roster of perfection- ists add a surprise - pretty mel- odies - to jazz-pop-soul fusion. 5 DON GIOVANNI Paris Opera Orchestra From the new movie sound track, Lorin Maazel briskly directs and inter- national cast sings a worthy new interpretation of Mozart's mas- terpiece. 6 TUSK Fleetwood Mac Unlike the Eagles fin the year's other most-awaited releasej, Mac didn't pander to its fans' affection with a retread, but challenged it with an ambi- tious new sound. 7 THE WALL Pink Floyd The band's signature sound is a gorgeous product of studio tech- nology employing wild guitar chords, synthesizer space music. 8 WANTED Richard Pryor This performance LP is so outrageously funny, even honkies will hoot. 9 BAD GIRLS Donna Summer it wasn't the breakthrough she promised, but disco's finest 71 minutes. 10 FLAG James Taylor Pop-rock's most ingratiating voice and most enjoyably sad composer hasn't struck his standard.
