The 1956-57 Basketball Warriors--Standing: Coach Leo Johnson, Angris Alexander, Ed Andres, Cal Walker, Rudy Ayala, Ralph Juvera, Manny Guillen, Andy Liechty, Larry Toledo. The 1956-57 Pueblo High Warrior cage club, in its sophomore year of inter-scholastic c ompe tition, became the first PHS squad to see action in the State AA Tournament. Finishing the s eaSon with a 3-5 Southern AA Division record, the Warriors went to the tourney as number three team. Facing the South Mountain Rebels in their opener, the team rated to finish second in the state, the Pueblo five turned in a stunning 72-63 upset. The Warriors were ousted in their second contest, 53-48, by the West Phoenix Thunderbirds. In finishing the season with a 7-12 mark, Pueblo had three rep- resentatives in the city's top prep scorers lis ting s. Forwards Andy Liechty and Angris Alexande r were the lone Warriors to top the 200 point mark with 251 and 225 respectively. The third team member was Center Calvin Walker with 162 points, for tenth place in the city stand- ings. Honors attained by team members included the All-City selections with Andy Liechty on the first team, Angris Alexander on the second team, and Cal Walker and Jay Busby honorable mention. Liechty was chosen captain of the second All AA Tournament team. On the All-Southe rn District team, Andy was one of the two unanimous choices.
