Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1944 volume:

When the world with faith was filled, Bring back the fervid zeal, The hearts of fire and steel, The hands that believe and build. In these halls are embedded numerous irreplaceable memories and reflections. The seniors have reflections of years crowded with pleasant experiences and associations impregnated with inimitable impressions, and the lower classmen recall their happy days at PHS and look forward to their intrinsic progression. Futurily these thoughts will take us back to our high school days and through the haze of reflections we see the youths who tread these halls. To you, students, the young people who love this school, its inspiration, we dedicate this year’s Provost. Let's give a toast to the widening host Of Provonians serving the nation. To those hundreds oi lads, and their brothers and dads, Who are saving our civilization; Wherever they are—be it near, be it far, On the land, in the air, on the sea— With a stoutness of heart they are doing their part To keep this— the land of the free. So good luck and God speed them, May nothing impede them Nor make them delay nor digress. May commencement time find them with power behind them, To roll up a final success. This year, the members have devoted considerable time to solving school problems in an efficient and beneficial manner. They have met at various times and taken care of situations in ways that brought respect from students, parents, and teachers. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to this group. In looking over this past school year I find that I have no regrets. From a student body with high standards such as yours, I except only the best. The record of your accomplishments has been outstanding, and the morale of the school has held up under favorable and undesirable conditions. Initiative on the part of students in extracurricular activities is commendable. Students, your achievements here will be a source of valuation to you and to me in years to come. K. E. WEIGHT, Principal With the completion of every school year there is a greater objective for us to meet. We reach our goal one year only to find that we have a little higher one to attain the next time. Our obligation is to strive honestly to reach these objectives as they come, v hile we maintain our high ideals and live by our principles. The achievements made by students at Provo High School are a source of Pride and their success this year has formed an endurable foundation for future achievements. J. C. In reflecting back over this school year we as students realize the splendid leadership shown by our student body officers. In addition they have sent Christmas cards to the boys in the service and remembered each girl's birthday with personal cards. Fern Starr Advisor Captain? The cooperative attitude shown by the members is one reason for the large number of successful performances given by these vocal groups. Page Forty-one C. H. RIGBY FERRIS BELL Make-up Adviser Business Adviser PflGVQst Striving to publish a satisfactory war year book, the Provost staff has exhibited originality and ability in presenting to the student body an everlasting emblem of unforget-able experiences of high school days mingled with pleasurable remembrances of age-old friendships. The '43-'44 Provost staff have put in long hours of work, and have willingly contributed their efforts toward giving a parting gift to students as a complete book of reflections. Pfievonian Siajj Another inseparable part of our school life is the Provonian, our school's bi-weekly newspaper, which has brought much joy and entertainment to the students, and recognition as an outstanding publication from the National Scholastic Press Association. Staff members have worked with determination to keep their publication at the top, and also----------------- have it be a source of enjoyment and instruction to students. It too can be placed in our hall of reflections. Page Forty-three Gaining.recognition throughout the state as one of the most outstanding musical groups, the band has become another page in our book of reflections. Under the skillful direction of Wesley Pearce, it has given several recognizable performances, besides furnishing the background music for other school functions. ORCHESTRA Another part of our cultural life here at Provo high school is the orchestra which has added immeasurable interest in appreciating the finer things of life. In all the programs given by this group of talented musicians, there has come appreciative recognition. Wesley Pearce, its able director, - has helped the orchestra mem-bers to also appreciate the more desirable type of entertainment. Page Forty-five G Shining Hour was truly an appropriate theme tor this year's annual Girls' Day. The assembly was very unusual with girls representing the Allied Nations in song and dance. The concluding feature of the day's events, the Girls' Day ” Dance, will long be remembered for its decorations in tones of purple and the crowning of ihe queen, Ruth Le Vitre. Pogc Forty-six RLS’ DAY The annual Junior Day assembly This year was highlighted by the introduction of the theme song Sea Fever, written for the Juniors by Miss Jane Thompson, BYU alumna. The assembly itself centered around a yachting trip with the captain, sea sick sailors and quests portraying a musical that will long be remembered. Students who attended the Prom took a make-believe ride on a large ocean liner. The streamers of blue and white, the port holes and instruments made a fitting atmosphere for the ship's orchestra under the leadershio of Dob Orton. unior Promen J U OS . SELO¥IA Sponsored by the home economics division of the high school with Ellen Walker as supervisor, the Selowia Club has promoted activities which would enable the girls to conduct a better type of home living. The highlight of the year was the trip to Salt Lake, sponsored by the club, which the girls took in the early part of April. BOUNCERS Under the direction of Ivan Young, this body of students has worked all year to keep the conduct in assemblies under control so that the school would not hesitate in bringing the highest type of performers here. Page Forty-eight The Dramatic Art Club gives students who are interested in dramatics and in performing in public a chance to show or try out their abilities. It also brings entertainment of the highest type to regular meetings for those who are interested in just watching and enjoying others take part. The Little Theatre ' holds many of the most enjoyable reflections for students who love the finer type of entertainment. Pogc Fifty-two _ettev£ to 1_ucerne Never once letting down a peppy attitude toward their positions, our cheer leaders have performed at all games, and have been a determining factor in gaining victory. Their enthusiastic attitudes brought out the proud support given by students. CREER LEADERS COACRES Bringing fame and honor to the school, the Green and White Bulldogs were supervised by an unusually fine coaching squad, who helped to make the students proud to belong to Provo High School. Coach Glenn Simmons led the basketball squad to regional championship and later to winning top position in the state tournament. He also directed an exceptionally fine track team and has in line some good prospects for next year. Max Greasy Warner completed his second year at PHS with the record of an outstanding football squad and an ever-winning baseball team to his credit. Pa?e Fifty-four Green and White gridders took a back seat to some of the teams this year, but for the first time in the history of the school downed the Carbon Dinasours. These fellows played good ball, and under the co-captaincy of Dean Goates and Don Dunkley led the boys through some outstanding games. Page Fifty-five Winning all-state honors, Ihe Green and White quint, under the coaching of Glenn Simmons, again made a name for PHS this year. Losing only one game in the region, the Bulldogs entered the tournament as the region three title holders, and along with these victories Jack Whipple and Joe Weight were place as all-state players. Provo High School defeated East High from Salt Lake City, Davis, and Boxelder in the tournament to cop the Utah State basketball title. SOPHOMORE TEAM B A S E B A L L Coach Greasy'' Warner's baseball squad again showed up well and made PHS proud to have these fellows wear the school colors. As this squad is made up mainly of juniors and sophomores the outlook for next year's team is extremely favorable. Provo high's tennis record for this year was one to be really proud of. Displaying high skill in both singles and doubles the fellows from PHS were victorious in some really tough battles. TENNIS Poge Fifty-seven G. A A. This year's Girls' Athletic Association has made an outstanding record in the field of girls' sports. Especially in basketball have they brought recognition to the school by coming out victorious over other schools throughout Utah County. This club is made up of girls who are especially interested in the out-of-doors and various types of sports. These basketball debs really make the maples hot for any high school team of girls. Under the guidance of Henrietta Harris, gym instructor, these girls played high schools from the surrounding cities. As this team is composed mainly from junior girls a polished team is expected next year. Pogc Fifty-eight Although getting off to a late start, PEP CLUB girls have successfully served the school and community this year.
