I W, I ! 4 1 w Prologue Welcome to the 1983 Prince. Between its covers we have gath- ered familiar faces and memories of this, our graduating year, 1983: the trials, the tribulation, the victories, the defeats, and the good times . . . Through this yearbook, we have found a way to preserve and carry with us these fond memories of Princeton High School and the motto for which it stands, I Live to Learn and Learn to Livef, 4X , 1 F, Q .S i Q The Prince Princeton High School Princeton, New Jersey 08540 x, ,,1 if A W I'- 2 Q X if-. Leadership and learning are indis- pensable to each otherf' -John Fitzgerald Kennedy The staff of the 1983 Prince is proud to dedicate this yearbook to John Sakala in appreciation of his continual demand for excellence from every member of the Princeton High School community and his concern for fulfilling its potential. He has given 10091 and has asked for no less in return. Being the first class to have travelled from freshman initiation to graduation with Mr. Sakala, the Class of 1983 is especially aware of the impact that he has made on the school by his introduction of many new courses, Project Adventure and a basic revitalization of the entire school. Besides being a fine administrator, he shows great versatility and skill in other fields. Mr. Sakala holds the rank of Life Master, the highest possible ranking in the American Contract Bridge League. He has won over fifty championships through- out his career. He is currently teaching bridge in the Princeton Adult School. We thank Mr. Sakala for being an outstanding principal, and inspiring teacher, and a true friend. The credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred with sweat, dust, and blood who strives val- iantly, who errs and comes up short, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who if he fails, fails while daring great- ly, and who knows his place is not with those cold, timid souls who know nei- ther victory nor defeat. - ROOSE- VELT TOMASZ MALINOWSKI Those who make peaceful revolutions impossible will make violent revolutions inevitable. Early in the year they were asked to perform at the MENC convention in Boston and the AASA convention in At- lantic City, on the basis of audition tapes submitted in competition. ln addition to these performances, a portion of the group made its stage debut in a production of Tom Stoppard's Every Good Boy Deserves Fa- vor. spring Their successes continued into the with the annual Spring Concert and chamber concerts. The latter were especial- l ' e y not al wor worthy because they featured sever- ks by student composers. All in all, the Orchestra had a whiz-bang year and can look forward to many future successes. The l982-83 String Orchestra had a full calender this year. In addition to participat- ing in the Winter and Spring concerts with the PHSO, the String Orchestra gave off- campus performances of its own. In Febru- ary some ofthe more experienced players joined the PHSO in Boston and Atlantic City. All of these performances, plus lof coursej their daily instruction under con- ductor Portia Sonnenfeld, afforded the String Orchestra opportunities to improve their technique, sight-reading and ensem- ble skills. Serving mainly as a preparatory musical experience for the Studio Band, the members of Nassau Band concen- trated on scales, rhythm, tone, and sight-reading. Though the Band did not perform in an abundance of concerts, its members learned music in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The Band did have great potential, and if the things listed below had occurred, it is conceivable that we would have been the ffl band of this school: Tony had come to class A Jim played softer A the clarinets copied the music A Mr. B finally graded us A Jacob stopped playing when told to A the saxes stopped talking A Cara got her instru- ment out A everybody had joined the I Love Ferdi fan club ful Love Ferdi bumper stickers and pins are still available at the school storej A Marcus kept time A the bones practiced A the trumpets played louder A Mr. B told better jokes A Sarah was as good as Steve A Audrey came back A Toby stopped eating A the Band leaders: Mark, Sarah, Rebecca, John, Cara, and Dom had decided to give up music and take a free fifth period. 137 SYMPHGNIC WIND ENSEMBLE , 5 ...c ,.----1 RECORDER CLUB 138 t s Q 1. The recorder club, under the direction and en- couragement of Mrs. Lehman, focused this year on developing technique and perfecting skills for playing this musical instrument. The recorder is a wind instrument bearing some resemblance to an end-blown flute, yet played vertically rather than horizontally. It consists of the same conical tube and eight finger holes but usually has a detacha- ble mouthpiece. The recorder is made from wood or from plastic. Recorders come in different sizes ranging from the very small soprano to the great bass recorder. Before written history, the record- er existed in its primitive form. It reached its peak of popularity during the time of the composers Bach and Handel and then declined during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. During the twentieth century the recorder has regained its popularity. Each Monday afternoon, the members of the club meet for one hour at Mrs. Lehman's home. Mrs. Lehman has conducted several recorder workshops and is presently teaching at the Prin- ceton adult School. The musical ability of the members and their knowledge of the instrument range from novice to advanced. The club wel- comes complete beginners as the rudiments of theory are discussed and taught with each piece of music. The music studied includes the compos- er Pavane, Bach, and Buxtehude, and covers all periods between the Medieval and the twentieth century. BELL CHCIR l 1 4 ,.....4,.. Row l - K, Macrae, C. Un- der the supervision of Mr. Trego and Mrs. Parrella and the great leadership and direc- tion of seniors Marla Dowell and Janice Flory with the help of Steve Strouse, a stu- dent teacher, the group strives to ring music from bells. The bells themselves are around 60 years old and were found hidden away, unused, in an elementary school last year. Although the bells were restored, unfortu- nately some of them are a little out of tune. But the music from these ancient bells is special and the year has been a great exper- ience the group members will never forget. They were the first Bell Choir ever to per- form at the Winter Concert in the Universi- ty Chapel- hopefully something that will soon become a tradition. They also per- formed for the Rotary Club, in a joint per- formance with the choir, and in the Spring Concert. It's been a great year and we hope that next year's choir will be as successful. In addition to performances by the choirs, orchestra, and wind ensemble, this year's program fea- tured a handbell choir which made its de- but. ln the past. the Winter Concert has served as proofof the excellence ofthe PHS music department, and this year's event promises to remain faithful to that tradi- tion. lndeed, the orchestra began the year with a higher level of playing than in years past, thereby making it especially prepared for this concert. Mrs. Sonnenfeld credits this improvement to several factors includ- ing several strong transfer students, a tal- ented freshman contingent, and improve- ment by veteran members. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble played a piece which was something out of the ordinary. The work, Alleluia. Laudamus Te. by Alfred Reed is an instrumental canticlc of praise in which the brass imi- tates the sound of a choir. The finale of thc piece was accompanied by Nancianne Par- rella on the chapel's impressive pipe organ. Vocal music at PHS was represented by three groups: the Chorale Singers, the Women's chorus, and the PHS choir. The program of the concert was an excit- ing one. The wind ensemble opened the evening with their Alleluia, Landamus Te. following which the handbell choir performed selected carols under the direc- tion of Marla Dowell. Then, the choir per- formed two works from the chapel's rear balcony: O Beatum et Sacrosanctum Diem by Peter Philips, and So Fahr lch Bin zu Jesu Christ by Heinrich Schulz. The attention then reverted to the front. where the orchestra performed Claudio Vlonteverdfs Toccata from Orfeo and the overture to ldomeneo by Wolfgang Mozart. The chorale Singers then performed Die- trich Buxtehude's Magnifecat accompa- nied by a small string ensemble, after which the orchestra resumed its part of the pro- gram with the Canon for String Orches- tra and the prelude to act three of Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. The Women's choir followed, after which the choir made its traditional candlelight procession to Flor Pester's Entrata Festivaf' The concert then ended with the annual renditions of Bach's Break Forth, O Beauteous Heav- enly Light. and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. ,lf J 1 N T w6W?E 'QQH-4 Q h .pf uk 5 t e , I' Winter Concert Tl f ef' Q 1 fc fl 1 A X if Sm- '.'. ine -'-.imew-,53'--mal V i m 'l x ' ' ' LEX f , N Ii , ' .n' X i A : 'I I Y tl I ' ' I: ' ' S I. , .Lx 1: il i v 'li i L A I F , ii, PmF3ff'feff i if n 1 W ig L: 1' ' 1' ' 'im ni 'Mi 1 1 A Q ii ' N 1 I ' gg i is Q93 iilvxr- i N Q ' ., i tal , i ,V l , aj-fur ain -elif I ff 'fe' if g i T i iii QT i 'ii ' Ff -1-,ffl A i T LIT i is Q Princeton High SCh00l,Mus1C Greups Princeton University Chapel Wednesday, December 22 1982 s ' P 1 .Uv FRESHMEN CHORUS The Freshmen Women's Chorus of 82- 83 worked hard to develop their vocal qual- ity, skills, and techniques, to learn the fun- Row l - C. The highlight of Student Council activi- ties is always the every-other-Monday night meetings, which are characterized by spirited debate and informative discussion. ln between meetings, members have visited homerooms so as to be able to better repre- sent student opinion. Major Student Council fundraisers have included taking inventory at M. Epstein's and selling over nine hundred carnations for Carnation Day. With the money it earned, Student Council funded Gold Keys, access cards and other improvements to the quality of life at Princeton High School. In order to broaden its perspective and better serve its constituents, the Student Council joined the Colonial Valley Confer- ence of Student Councils and the New Jer- sey Association ofStudent Councils. Coun- cil members lobbied for the return of state aid and the continuation of Mercer Metro service in Princeton. The council promoted the beginning of 'LSafe Rides program to give teens a safe way home on Friday and Saturday nights, sponsored CROP walk and a hunger awareness day. The Council made many suggestions to the administra- tion on policies and activities that directly affected the students. Due to PHS stu- dents' diverse ethnic background. the club learned about other countries well. Officers through first semester were: President Valentina Mazzucato Vice President Claire Willis Secretary Esther deBoer and through second semester: President Bhaswati Bhattacharya Vice President Heather Troy Secretary Elena Lucullo Treasurer Maggy Tadros The Spanish Club offers students the opportunity to practice speaking Spanish and to learn more about the traditions, customs, and culture of Spain and of the Spanish speaking countries of the Americas. Members meet regularly to plan activities and to raise money for trips, dinners, and for contributing to a foster child pro- gram in South America. ln the past we have organized theater trips to movies and to Broadway shows, and we travelled to Spain in the spring of l982. 153 Members of the German Club attend German dinners throughout the year. This year we had dinner and attended a play with students from the Lawrenceville School. Other activities included an Okto- berfest, making gingerbread houses, and a field trip. The Italian Club of Princeton High School frequently meets at Dorothea House where they have the Nbella cucina ita- lianaf' Students are taught how to make pizza, ravioli, and caunoli. An expedition to the Italian Club of South Brunswick High School to see a film was a memorable ex- perience. Ten students participated in the trip to Italy during the Easter vacation. Some students are fortunate to have re- turned after trying and failing to navigate a gondola. A main event to New York to the Best of Broadway and an eating exper- ience at Little Italy will never be forgotten. 154 GERMAN CLUB 3 'jx W Row l Y S. Schwab, G. Woolston. M. Schwab. I. WWW? if Ei Eg S . sg: E' l On the evening of February 3rd, 17 stu- dents and Miss Carey left via Air France a la decouverte de la belle France. After three days in Paris - three days of explor- ing the tiny streets of Le Quartier Latin and Montmartre, of visiting Versailles and the great museums of Paris, of haunting the cafes of the Champs Elysees - we left via train for Arcachon where we were warmly received by our host families. While there, we visited St. Jean de Luz, Biarritz, and even a bit of Spain. We were celebrities at the Air Base of Cazaux. And, of course, we attended classes at the Lycee de Grand Air. We enjoyed the uboumsf' raw oysters, the discotheques, skiing in the Alps and the Pyrenees. But most of all we enjoyed being with our new friends in Arcachon. The Darwin Club is a club dealing with the general sciences, not just the study of Biology as the name tends to suggest. We sponsored trips to the Franklin Insti- tute and to the Fusion Reactor at the Uni- versity's Forrestal Center, and we're plan- ning more, Other activities include community services, such as water sam- pling and various others. This club also spends some time tutoring fellow-club members who are having prob- lems in their science classes. 155 MATH TE The Math Team consists of interested math students from all grades at PHS. The team is a member of the Delaware Valley Math League and the Colonial Valley Math Leagueg both of these leagues hold meets once a month at area high schools, at which students take a one-hour test and are afterwards served refreshments while the tests are graded. PHS also enters a few state-wide math tournaments. Traditionally, PHS wins one or both of the CVC and Delaware Valley Champion- ships. Row l -- T. Keisler, N. Hastings, B. Bransong Row 2 -- B. Both teams compete in two major events, the N.J. Science League and the N.J. State Science Day, as part ofa Sci- ence Team from Princeton High. The N.J. Science League held meets on Jan. 14, Feb. 10, March lO, and April 10. The N.J. State Science Day competition was held at Rider College in late May. Unlike the Biology and Chemis- try teams at PHS, the Physics team is made up of only first year Physics students, taken from the PSSC and Harvard Project classes. Although many of the problems on the exams tested memorization while PHS Physics classes stress logical application, the Physics team won the first two meets easily and ranked second in the state as of then. With their consistently good scores on the N.J. Science League exams and on the N.J. State Science Day in late May, with the help of the A.P. Physics students, the team has gained state-wide recognition. BIOLOGY TEAM Row l I V. Chen, J. Wood, M. Liu, P. Baum Row 2 A J. Liffiton, N, Hirsh, l. Larsen, D. Proshan, T. Tamasi Cooperative Office Education is a work exper- ience program for seniors who take a related class each day with the teacher-coordinator, Gloria Seitz, and spend the afternoon working in area businesses. They start out at the minimum wage, sometimes more, gain valuable business exper- ience and raises, explore career opportunities in the field, and many times find full-time positions after graduation from high school or college with the same company. Very often the student keeps the part-time job while attending area colleges. Students who have had at least a year of type- writing are encouraged to take Cooperative Of- fice Education in their senior year. The related daily class affords each student the opportunity to improve skills already acquired and to learn new skills, such as word processing, data entry on the microcomputer, accounting applications on the microcomputer, machine transcription, oper- ation of the electronic calculator, etc. lt earns I5 credits, but more importantly, the student gains skills that last a lifetime and have a ready market all over the world. lfyou can also spell, proofread correctly, and are accurate with figures, the op- portunities are boundless! For two years, the members of the Black History Club have been meeting on Wednes- day afternoons. Discussions, research, and the planning of activities have all been part of our meetings. Activities this year have included dinner parties, car washes, a trip to Philadelphia, a talent show, a fashion show and a hopeful trip to Washington. -,mum Row l - M. Cumberbatch, T. Turner, M. The two Chris's and friends gave us a gorgeous set and Koepper and Co. did a fantastic job on the lights. And as always, Carol Wimberg was price- less and perfect as director par excellence. Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour concerns a girl in a boarding school who spreads the story that two women have an attachment for each other. The role of Mary, that neurotic, sly creature who de- stroys three lives, was beautifully played by Eva Pomerantz. Lisey Good, Carolyn DJorup and Brett Freeman were strongly impressive as the three maligned charac- ters. A supporting cast of Mia Cahill, Jennifer Levitt, Fiona McCrae, Kirsten MacCrae, Heather McFarlane, Maud Mandel, Viv- ian Miller, Antonia Rudenstine, and Lionie Wortman was a smashing success. The musical this year is Celebration by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones and was presented May l2, 13, and 14. Several one-acts illuminated the stage during the season: Amy Bergman and Mi- chelle Maryk were senastional in Langford Wilsonis Ludlow Fair, Sonja Kirton and Sylvana Mattera were a success in My Cup Runneth Over, by Robert Patrick, Ted lrenas and Susan Huffaker brought the two characters in Israel Horowitz's lt's Called the Sugar-Plum to poignant reality, Canadian Gothic by Johanna Glass, was wonderful as presented by Julie Caskey, Peter Nelson, Todd Root, and Emilie White. CURIGUS SAVAGE Sensitivity and good intentions pervade this in- teresting and funny play. It tells the story of an eccentric old woman who hides her money from the greedy clutches of her malicious step-chil- dren, and follows their antics in trying to find it. The step-children, Lilybelle, Magnus, and Sam- uel have Mrs. Savage committed to the Cloisters, a home for the mentally disturbed. The guests of the Cloisters, however, are gentle and friendly, albeit somewhat unbalanced, and lead a peaceful life under the guiding hands of Miss Willy and the doctor. In the end, right, of course, prevails and tender farewells are exchanged between Mrs. Savage and her friends. Altogether an entertain- ing night out. K. .W ,,.i51.lg...5st.k I,,., QIFQQ.. ,t-N, Wine in the Wilderness, by Alice Chil- dress, defines the chasm building between the wealthy, intellectual blacks of today, the down-trodden of another era, and the street people who have little chance for im- proving their lives. The parts of Old-Timer, brilliantly per- formed by Kenneth McKeller, and Tommy, played equally successfully by Paige Wal- den, provide intensive comedy and pathos. Bill, an artist, and his friends Jonnyman and his wife Cynthia, pull the theme of the play together. Terrence Phox, Kyle Ste- phens, and Allison Hoagland were perfect- ly cast in those respective roles. ' . 7 I' 4 'Qt t y f ,. 5 y Zhi 3 ?.f .rygwwf f - f ff' V E2, 0 Q . We couldn't have done it without you! We would also like to thank the members of the staff who attended our disorganized and seemingly endless work sessions, and who persevered through it all to that Fateful Friday. To Bob Davine, an apology and a hug. We'll never forget you and we know you'll never forget us. Or rather, we'll never forget you, and you'll never forgive us. ol i s i Y. is X f X .
