NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is a nation-wide organization which is open to all secondary schools which apply for a charter. The charter for Prince George High was requested in 1955 and in March 1955, the Royal Chapter of the National Honor Socie- ty came intobeing. The Society was established to fulfill the need of a stimulant to scholarship and to bring out the abilities of outstanding students. It is the goal towards which many students work through- out their high school years. Each spring the Honor Society in- ducts new members by means of the tapping ceremony. In this impressive program, old members walk through the audience and tap new members who then take the oath to uphold these high ideals of the Society. Only those who are outstanding in character, service, leadership, and scholarship, the four points of the measuring stick of eligibility, are chosen among aspi- rants. The Society hopes to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worth leader- ship, and to encourage the development of character in students of Prince George High School. Graduation greatly thinned the ranks of the boys that made up the fine team of 1958 and combined with the transfer of four starters during the spring and sum- mer months, pre-season predictions for the Royals were extremely pes- simistic. Those who were willing to venture a guess listed only two THE Colonial Hgts. Smithfield Hopewell Franklin Southampton Petersburg Midlothian Chuckatuck Va. Beach or three possible wins from the toughest schedule ever played by a Prince George team, one which included two of the best Group I schools in the Central District. But this team which boasted only 6 lettermen and a starting lineup which included four boys who had never played in a varsity contest, ignored all predictions going undefeated in their district with a 6--3 overall record. TEAM BACK ROW: Jim Dozier, Bobby Atwater, Charles Cabaniss, Curt Hardee, Billy Palmer, Bobby Safford, Craig Parker, Bob Gardner, Pete Brockwell, Bill Urban, Robbie Elliott, Mike Dunford, Mike King. FRONT ROW: Larry Wilson, Jimmy Swineford, Bill Scopel, Mac Holder, Eddie Poole, Al Brockwell, Don Schraner, Johnny Ellwood, Earl Allin, Sam Allin, Robert Lee, son Ashworth, Greg Parker. ED POOLE Captain of the Royals Lee Linder, Jim Plante, Dave Trickler, Jay Russell, Hender- “A WINNING CREW” PRINCE GEORGE 26 COLONIAL HEIGHTS 8 Before the largest home crowd of the season the Prince George Royals dumped neighboring Colonial Heights 26-8. The big offensive gun was 200 pound fullback Mac Holder. Holder scored two touchdowns and one extra point. The Royals displaying first game jitters were slow starting and led at half time 6-0. But the second half scores by Holder, a one yard run, Dave Trickler's 18 yard run and Jerry Power's one yard run iced the game away. PRINCE GEORGE 34 SMITHFIELD 7 The first crucial district game found the Royals trouncing Smithfield 34-7. Smithfield had not been scored on in two previous games and were favored to defeat Prince George, But led by little Dave Trickler who passed for 3 touchdowns and one point after touchdown and Mac Holder who scored twice, the Royals played an inspired contest. Lee Linder turned in an outstanding pass catching performance which included two touchdowns. Lead- ing the defensive plays were captain-elect Eddie Poole, freshman quarterback Mike Dunford, and end Al Brock- well. As an added attraction this game was dedicated “parent's night. PRINCE GEORGE 0 HOPWELL 56 With school spirit at a peak the Royals journeyed to Hope- well to tangle with the Group I Devils. It was a real battle for 10 minutes, but then a blocked punt and a 48 yard touch- down on the next play broke the back of the Prince George defenses and paved the way for the 56-0 rout. Dave Trickler and Jerry Powers led what little offense the Royal's contributed. PRINCE GEORGE 21 FRANKLIN 0 The Royals returned to the district wars with a shutout victory over Franklin. After building up a 21-0 lead in the first half the Royals called on their defense which responded by holding the Broncos scoreless. Holder, Powers, and Trickler led the offense with Johnny Palmer and Al Brockwell defensive leaders. PRINCE GEORGE 25 SOUTHAMPTON 12 HOMECOMING The Royals made their first annual homecoming game a success as they downed the fighting Southampton Indians 25-12. Prince George was ahead 12-6 at the half, but early in the third quarter the Indians tied the game up on a spectacular 90 yard kickoff return. Then Eddie Poole raced 25 yards for the third Royal touchdown and Dave Trickler iced it with a 52 yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Bob Lee turned in his finest game of the sea- son leading both the defensive and offensive lines. Also Lee Linder, the Royals big end, gave the Indians secondary some trouble making some fine catches. PRINCE GEORGE 7 PETERSBURG 27 The stubborn Royals fell before a strong Wave eleven 27-7, The game was closer than the score indicates as the Royals threatened to score three times during the game. Finally with two minutes left in the game Mac Holder plowed into the end zone for the lone Royal tally. Don Schraner, 190 pound tackle was unable to see action due to an arm injury. Holder and Trickler starred on offense. Defensive play was led by Craig Parker, ably supported by Curt Hardee, Brockwell, Gilbert Lee, and Earl Allin. PRINCE GEORGE 6 MIDLOTHIAN 20 In torrential downpour Midlothian handed their Royals the lone Group II defeat. The Royals couldn't get thetr offense moving. Late in the game with the Trojan's diving for their fourth score, Dave Trickler picked up a fumble and raced 95 yards to avert the shutout. PRINCE GEORGE 54 CHUCKATUCK 6 In their final home appearance of the season the Royals erupted for 8 touchdowns in 54-6 rout of Chuckatuck. Trickler scored three touchdowns and passed for another with Poole and Holder chipping in two apiece. Holder and Trickler turned in two of the prettiest runs of the season with Mac racing 55 yards on a handoff and Trickler with a 70 yard punt return with letter perfect blocking. Don Schraner, Bob Lee, and Lee Linder led the fired up forward wall of the Royals. PRINCE GEORGE 27 VIRGINIA BEACH 13 The Royals closed out their 1959 season with the one of the greatest comeback victories in Prince George history. Eddie Poole finished his football playing at Prince George with the best game of his career scoring three times. But as Coach Brockwell remarked after the game “it was a great team effort. Poole and Trickler re- versed their usual roles with Eddie starring on offense and Trickler included in a group of defensive standouts com- posed of Robbie Elliot, Mike Dunford, Jay Russell, Bill Urban and Bob Lee. We have a new mat and cover which will enable us to have more home matches and a fuller schedule next year. This was the first year that our team has won a team match. No other schools in our group have wrestling teams so we have had to go to Group I schools and Prep Schools to find competition. Another new thing has been added this year; a Most Valuable Wrestler Trophy has been awarded to the person whom the team thought was the greatest asset to their team. Robbie Elliott, one of our co- captains, was greatly honored with this presentation and this was truly deserved as he certainly does ful- fill these requirements.
