Volume VI Presented by the Students of PRINCE GEORGE HIGH SCHOOL © Classes 14 Klementary 48 @ ¢ Organizations 64 The Litwayy of Virginia e ion wy moth % a ichmond..VA Music 75 @ e teatures 82 Sports 86 ® Foreword The footsteps of us all will echo down the halls and disappear... With the majestic strains of Pomp and Circumstance, the class of '59 will leave their Alma Materto enter prepared into the role of adulthood, But this class is not known for its position on the calendar, not for the duties awaiting its members, not for the members themselves - it isknown, respected, and admired for its achievements within these halls, It wassought after forits wisdom, encouraged for its t alents, praised for its character, With these accomplishments in mind, the Peerage Staff of '58-'59 presents a simple, yet accurate record of this class and its members, along with their classmates, If these newly recognized men and women receive any benefit from ree IP HBES ha ges and calling endeared memories to mind, the effort of the staff will certainly have been weRth while. We wish them happiness and God-speed, “The Editors Dedication why a ee ik ae ae eel seer ae After leaving school, there is always a teacher whom students remember with admiration and respect, There is one whom they feel has been outstand- ing in his contributions to the school, who has excelled as a teacher, and who has been kind and considerate to his students, We feel we have a teacher we can remember in all these respects, Mindful of all his contributions to the individual, to the school and to the community, we, the Peerage Staff of 1959, dedicate the annual to our band director, Mr. John V, Mazza, (AIC ONEA RNG School Board Left to Right: MR, JERRY SKALSKY MR, HAROLD ALLIN MR, N, B, CLEMENTS, Vice Chairman MR, SMITH MRS, JULIA BARTHA, Clerk Absent: MR, FRANK LIVESAY, Chairman MR, FRED DOEG Director of Instruction MR, CHARLES W, SMITH Superintendent of Schools Prince George County Principal: SHELTON T, BELSCHES B,A., University of Richmond M.A., Middlebury College Assistant Principal; CHARLOTTE R, ZEIGLER A.B., College of William and Mary M.A., University of Virginia Prince George County School 1958-1959 ARLICK L, BROCKWELL JR, A.B., Duke University Junior History, Senior Government LEGIE SMART A.B., M.A,, Carsm and Newman College Latin, Senior English ELAINE BURROUGHS B,A., St. Quentin, France French, Science MARY LOUISE OLSON B.S., Wisconsin State College English, Library CHARLES H, THOMAS B.S,, Randolph-Macon College; M,S.U, of Pittsburgh Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Math EVA E, FOWLER M.S., Commercial Education, Temple University Typing, General Business, Clerical Practice ELIZABETH M, LEETE V.P.1., Madison College; University of Virginia Art SEATON E, SMITH, JR, A.B,, Randolph-Macon College Algebra, Plane and Solid Geometry, Trigonometry FRANCES M, STRONACH B.A., Meredith College, M.A., Wellesley College English MARJORIE M, ASHLEY B,A,, State University of New York, also M.A. English, Speech THOMAS GEORGE B. National Honor Society The National Honor Society is a nation-wide organization which is open to all secondary schools which apply for a charter. The charter for Prince George High was requested in 1955 and in March 1955, the Royal Chapter of the National Honor Society came into being. The Society was established to fulfill the need of a stimulant to scholarship and to bring out the abilities of outstanding students. It is the goal towards which many students work throughout their high school years. Each spring the Honor Society inducts new mem- bers by means of the tapping ceremony. In this impressive program, old members walk through the audience and tap new members who then take the oath to uphold these high ideals of the Society. Only those who are outstanding in character, service, leadership, and scholarship, the four points of the measuring stick” of eligibility, are NATIONAL chosen among the aspirants, The Society hopes to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worth leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of Prince George High School. 7 i 65 Student Cooperative Association LYNN LYMAN PHYLIS TOMLINSON President Secretary DICK WHITE Vice President ERNEST CIBULA Treasurer The student body of Prince George School is organized as the Student Cooperative Associa- tion. Its elected officers and homeroom representatives form the Student Council through which all activities of the school are directed and through which many projects are initiated and carried out. The first meeting ended in a 6-6 tie where no rules prevailed. But this year all was different! The gitls practiced diligently in learning their plays with the help of their class coaches. The outcome was an exciting game for all, while the Seniors won 23-0. Coach Edwards looks confident. Allin crawls for yardage! First and ten for the Seniors! What's going on? The Royals showing first game jitters defeated a weak Whaleyville 11, 26-0. Thurman Pelter sparked the Royals’ attack with a 65 yard punt return fora T. D. The explosive backfield broke loose for some long runs and defeated Deep Creek 18-7. Frank Williams raced 70 yards in the first quarter for the first score, this was followed minutes later by Eddie Poole who picked off a stray Deep Creek aerial and scampered 55 yards for a T. D. Bill Griffis added the final score with the year's longest run from scrimmage, an 85 yard gallop. After going through a week of sluggishness in workouts, the Royals capped it off with a much weaker showing then expected losing to Group I Petersburg, 48-0. The Royals suffered a terrible blow as four-year veteran Willie Hall broke his ankle during practice and was lost for the season. With 135 pound quarterback, David Trickler, passing for five touchdowns and scoring the other two himself, the Royals defeated Smithfield 47-0. The defense spark- ed by Buddy Nichols, Gerald Tiller, Buck Nunnaly and Kenny Deadmon held the Packers scoreless. Next, Franklin was a Prince George victim. The running of Thurman Pelter and Frank Williams plus the pass-catching of Jim McCarron was too much for a strong Franklin team. The final tally was 27-12 as the Royals came back from a 6-0 deficit. The Royals followed that game with, by far, their best all-around performance of the year. They travelled to Southampton to play a team which was unbeaten in 14 games. But the Royals were determined to end the winning streak. After a hotly, contested, scoreless first half the Royals stormed back to win a 26-7 game. Douglas Freeman of Richmond was the next foe of the Royals. The Rebels built up a 28-0 halftime lead, but the Royals came back and outscored the Douglas Freeman 11 in the 2nd half only to lose 35-13. One bright spot in the defeat was Buck Nunnally's fine defen- sive play getting 8 straight tackles. The Royals had better luck against Midlothian scoring at will, they built a 26-6 lead. Then watched the Trojans come roaring back within 7 points. As the final whistle blew, the score was 33-26. The Royals then completed their first undefeated district slate by completely outclassing and undermanned Chuckatuck 11. The Royals tallied in every period to run up a 35-0 verdict. Five members of the Royals’ squad won second team berths on the All-district I team and four other received honorable mention. Winning second teams slots were Tackle, Buck Nunnally; Center, Gary McMillan; Guard, Buddy Nichols; Halfback, Frank Williams; and quarterback; Dave [rickler. The honorable mentions went to end; Jim McCarron; Half- backs, Eddie Poole and Thurman Pelter; and Guard, Gerald Tiller. The gridmen set several school records this year, These are: Most points scored in one season - 225; most touchdowns in one season - 34; most points in district play - 176; least points by opponents in district play - 26; and best district record - 6-0; for the team. These records show the fighting spirit of the Royals this year. 87 eatin, D eleat ° alcon ¢Prince Georgtiimoll: A3- 26 '2 46-0 Leq : Brent 14 q Ro gt | Nie -_ Three Times, Passes ail Prince ™ , had jailed hey hd ay kicked and Robert’ For 5 More TDs’ is ,. e winch down coming § took the ball on his . ing fine blocking bb: By JIMMY EZZE ¢ ¥ ‘the final score of the SN The | gain put the Falcons. “, : Boontsutio. Group I schools such as Douglas Freeman, Thomas Dale, and St. Christopher readily accepted, and Prince George was welcomed into the realm of wrestling. The Royals have had their share of drawbacks - from injuries all the way to inexperience. Prince George is unique in being the only school in Group II in this area which has taken to the mats. The whole team is composed of Sopho- mores with the exception of one Junior and our Senior Co- Captain, Buddy Nichols. This makes for happier days in the future. For when our boys are Seniors they will have had two and three years experience. The team has been invited to the Richmond Invitational Tournament. In February two of the team members will journey to Princess Anne to the State Championships, which will be held in Norfolk. The eyes of the team are on the future, now that we are firmly established in the circles of Group I wrestling. This year's co-captains were; Buddy Nichols and Robbie Elliott.
