IOWAN piwuc umm ' Published by the 1958 SENIOR CLASS OF PRICE JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA OWANfe e ueU f SALISBURY, N. C Foreword The class of 1958 wishes to perpetuate some memories which we hope will remain in the depths of our hearts forever. In the future, we hope that this annual will be used as a stepping stone to even better publications. We, the Class of 1958, would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our principal, Mr. S. O. Jones, our parents and patrons, our superintendent, Mr. J. H. Knox, and the faculty. Especially we wish to thank Mrs. A. A. Lancaster, Mr. W. L. Miller, and Mr. W. D. Peerman, our senior advisers, for their profound devotion and persevering guidance in our class activities. We also wish to express our thanks to the many Salisbury business firms and organizations for the advertisements furnished and the donations given, without which our plans could not have been accomplished. Lloyd Yarborough EcHtor-in-Chief Jerome Ingram Chairman, Advertising Committee Dedication We, the members of the Class of ' 58, hereby dedicate this annual to Miss Eunice Powers, who has been untiring in her efforts to instill in our minds the value of commercial education and English in our everyday lives. Miss Powers is in our opinion the ideal teacher. She has dedicated her life to educating the youth of today both by precept and example. These are just a few of the reasons why Miss Powers will always be number one in our hearts. The S uperintendent Mr. J. H. Knox To the Members of the Class of 1958 of Price High School Ladies and Gentlemen: I congratulate you upon the completion of the requirements for graduation from J. C. Price High School. This is an achievement that speaks well for all of you and for those who have helped you to make this accomplishment possible. My hope is that you will continue your education throughout life and that your achievements will reflect credit upon you, your family, and upon Price High School. Cordially yours, J. H. Knox, Superintendent Price Junior-Senior High School MAIN BUILDING AND JUNIOR HIGH WING To dwell within these walls has been an inspirational and educational experience for us. Other than scholastic knowledge, we have obtained knowledge that taught us how to live harmoniously and creatively with our fellow man. For this, we leave you our eternal gratitude. SENIOR HIGH WING Our Retired Principa L. H. Hall The Class of 1958 takes pleasure in following other classes in saluting Mr. L. H. Hall, our retired principal. For thirty-six years he was the leader of the Negro Division of Public Schools in Salisbury. As principal of Price he was able to inspire many pupils who have now become successful. We salute Mr. Hall as a great educator and a great citizen. Since 1911 he has been superintendent of the Sunday School of Moore ' s Chapel; he has been trustee of the same church for twenty-two years. Mr. Hall has served as Tenant Inter¬ viewer for the Housing Projects, member of the Recreation Commission, member of the Interracial Council, Chairman of the Rowan Division of Boy Scouts, Secre¬ tary to the National Alumni Association of Livingstone College. The City of Salis¬ bury has honored Mr. Hall in three significant ways: a street has been named for him; the gymnasium and shop building were named in his honor; he has been appointed as member of the Board of Education of the city. Our Principa S. O. Jones, Principal PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE TO SENIORS Congratulations for the successful completion of the tremendous task of pub¬ lishing this annual. You have shown the value of concerted effort and class spirit. Without the foresight, courage, careful planning and tenacity on the part of your class leaders and sponsors, the reality of this annual would not have come to pass. May you look forward to many happy years which will be based on the solid foundation laid while here at Price High School. And, as you leave the portals of this school building, may you ever exemplify the kind of spirit which you have so nobly advanced in the preparation of this annual. In Memoriam Mrs. E. Beatrice Riggs Hall Mrs. Beatrice Riggs Hall, wife of Mr. L. H. Hall, and former teacher of Price High School, departed this life, December 30, 1957. From 1924 to 1953, Mrs. Hall served faithfully and efficiently as a teacher at Price. Having received the Bachelor of Science degree from Talladega College and the Bachelor of Library Science degree from Western Reserve University, Mrs. Hall was well qualified to assume many duties. During her tenure, she taught mathematics, physical educa¬ tion, science, and later in her career, she became librarian. Mrs. Hall organized the Crown and Scepter Club, and was its sponsor for a number of years. She was also sponsor of many debating teams that won recogni¬ tion throughout the state. Under her guidance, many projects for school improve¬ ment were completed. In the community, Mrs. Hall was an active member of Moore ' s Chapel A. M. E. Zion Church, of the Interracial Council, the National Woman ' s Council, the Eastern Star, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was also a leader of the Girl Scouts. Mrs. Hall was a stimulating personality, that radiated energy and ambition. She seemed to have had a divinity of purpose and as Emerson says: “To help the young soul to add energy, inspire hope, and blow the coals into a useful flame; to redeem defeat by new thought and firm action, this though not easy, is the work of divine men. Everyone liked him because he was an affable person with altruistic ways. He joined our class in his Junior Year after attending school at Dunbar High School in East Spencer. He was elected president of the Junior Class and he also served as one of the Student Council representatives. He had a high acumen in art and music; he was very valuable to the band. He was an active member of the F. B. L. A., French Club, Science Club and Hi-Y Club. His desire was to become a minister. He frequently prayed in devotions and in assembly. He was one of the finest personalities in our school. May his spirit remain with us always and serve as a guiding light for all of Price High School. We were divided into three sections, with Mrs. B. D. Lee, Mrs. W. M. Williams, and Mr. A. Monroe as advisors. Two very exciting events occurred during our Freshman year: First, the District and State Basketball Tournaments were held at Price. Second, the State Older Boys Conference was held at Price. Here again was the chance to be host to charming young men. Sarah Leach, Yvonne Standifer, Gwendolyn Ford and Thelma Cole were quite fortunate in being able to accompany the band to Washington, where they played for the President of the United States among other activities. On the Library Staff are Lloyd Yarborough and Frank Goodrum. Elaine Connor and La Frieta McMullen joined the Girls Basketball Team. A new club, the Photography Club, is composed of a large number of seniors. During our tenure here our band has won a superior rating consistently. We wish next year ' s band luck, even though twenty-four seniors are graduating and will no longer be members. Our class has lost and gained members. Our total number now is seventy. Class Prophecy Our erudite scientists, Theodore Ross, Emmett Rippy and Jimmy McCorkle, have just come from the dark room at Price. Unknown to the teacher of photography, these boys have invented a ma¬ chine that after taking one ' s picture, writes down what the future holds for him ten years hence. As might be expected, McCorkle, with his suave, persuasive, jiving manner, has succeeded in get¬ ting a picture of each of the seniors. Rippy has the recorded statements and Ross has secured a copyright for the invention, which is now called the mac-rip-ro-graph. Here is the report. Listen (or read) for after today you will pay to get this information. James Hawkins, business manager of Mac-rip-ro-graph, Inc., is a hard business man. His motto is: Busi¬ ness is for profit and profit is for me. Here is the report which Hawkins showed to me after payment of $500.00: Charles Partee, James Wheeler, and Charles Hardin, known as The Happy Harmoneers, are engaged for the summer (1968) at the Apollo Theater, New York City. While not on tour, Charles Partee plays the stock market on Wall Street. Jannett Scott is model for the Sight-Savers Eyeglass Company of which Joe Patterson is president. James Martin is the star player of the New York Knickerbockers. His personal trainer is Dr. Robert Ervin. My, my! Basketball must really be bruising these days to require a full-time M.D. William McConneaughey is the team ' s publicity agent. The news is sometimes late for Butch still doesn ' t know what promptness and punctual¬ ity mean. Robert Johnson is working with Ringling Broth¬ ers at the concession stand. My, how he loves that job. His wit and noise have paid off, for he owns a 1968 Imperial and his chauffeur is Robert Massey. Johnsie Lyerly and Cora Hart have organized a girls school. Teaching with them are Ora Rob¬ ertson, Evangeline Salmon and Betty Fant. They emphasize homemaking, dancing and art. Lloyd Yarborough is now editor of the Pitts¬ burgh Courier. This is now a world-famous daily and its success is due largely to the staff of beauti¬ ful secretaries. James Weddington is coaching baseball at Price High School. George Goodman is the rich owner of Good¬ man ' s Department Store for Men. His slogan is The man worthwhile is the man in style—Buy at Goodman ' s . As head of the dep artment of French at North Carolina College, Aljosie Baker has made a great reputation. Because she is small, many of her students address her as Mademoiselle , which she promptly changes by telling them: Non, Madame— . Can you guess what follows that title? Guess who ' s leading the Annual Easter Parade in New York City? Yes, it ' s that jack-of-all-trades, Charles Miller. He ' s the top drum major in America. In Orangeburg, S. C., I see my friends Curtis Atkins and Leroy Douglas laying brick; that is, they are laying brick on a scaffold so that the mason can reach them. At the local cafe, an all-girl band is appearing, Sarah Leach and Elaine Connor are the leading saxophonist and trumpeter, respectively. The star vocalist is Dorothy Aldrich. In California, we see that San Quentin has a new warden, Thomas Steele. Some of the in¬ mates are, oh, oh, too much static. The Mac-rip- ro-graph hesitates to divulge this. Moving on, we see Milady ' s Fashion Center owned and operated by Barbara Smarr and Alice Tate. Among the best dressed customers are Doris Wilson and her good friends, Dorothy Koontz and Deborah Abel. In Hollywood, we see Evelyn McClain and Mary Wilkins (Mary uses her maiden name even though she ' s married to ????) They are currently appear¬ ing in that Oscar-awarding picture, The Young Kittens . •Their leading men are Leroy Woods and Rich¬ ard Walker, who have stuck together through thick and thin . Appearing at the Hollywood Bowl is that fa¬ mous contralto soprano, Joyce Ellis, accompanied by Lula Belle Norman. The leading gossip columnists of this era are Cletus Gibson and Rachel Gaither, who have re¬ placed Walter Winchell and Hedda Hopper. Giving piano lessons in Baltimore is Yvonne Standifer. Her child proteges are the daughters of the former Nell Wilson and Marselene Smith, respectively. Teaching laboratory technology at Meharry Medical College is Janie Morris. Among the top models in the country are Gwendolyn Ford and Marian Ross, who own and operate the Fo-Ro Modeling Agency which hires girls from all parts of the world. Their main office is in Paris, France. It is located alongside of Ada Burch ' s beauty salon. Ada ' s hair creations are ad¬ mired and respected on both sides of the Atlantic. Price Brown, one of America ' s top electrical engineers, recently received the Nobel Award for his outstanding contributions to mankind. His most famous project was wiring the rocket which reached Mars. It has not returned as of yet. Could something be wrong with the electrical wiring? I must compose myself, I must rid my¬ self of these preposterous thoughts. Nothing could possibly go wrong, or could it????? The most popular panel show today is Fort Knox Can Be Yours . Appearing on the panel are Helen Agnew, Shirley Harris, Henry Jordan and LaFrieta McMullen. The positions pay $250,000 annually. Molly Alexander is the new Sapphire on the Amos and Andy Show . Recently, Beatrice Lowery, Agnes Partee, and Elizabeth Pearson landed teaching contracts at their Alma Mater. Currently Price High School teachers get $10,500 a 9ear. In Salisbury we also see George Smith and Elsie Ragan, who are business partners. Among their many business ventures is Rock and Roll Taxi Company. Their motto is, Shake well before using . Their taxis certainly corroborate their motto. And now what happened to A. T. Turner? He is a famous lawyer. He has won several nation- ally-known cases. As a prosecuting attorney he has proved that crime does not pay if Turner knows about it. He lectures at public schools weekly in order to decrease juvenile delinquency. ARTHUR TURNFR Class Poem Now we must leave you, dear Price High; Our hearts are breathing with a sigh. We have to leave you, as you know; But we ' ll praise your name wherever we go. We ' ll walk new roads as we go ' long; Our hearts will sing a different song. We ' ll always strive to do our best; To show that Price can pass the rest. We thank our many teachers dear; Who worked with us through smiles and tears. Dear principal, we ' ll thank you too, For all the work you ' ve had to do. We must go on; we cannot stay; We must go on to future days. To classmates we will say adieu . And to our school mates, we love you . Together we will say goodbye; Goodbye to you, O dear Price High. Your precepts we shall e ' er uphold; Until we reach our final goal. MOLLY ALEXANDER CLASS COLORS CLASS FLOWER Pink and Blue Pink American Beauty Rose CLASS MOTTO The best is the key to success Class Song Tune: The Twelfth of Never Words by Joyce Ellis and Lallage Oglesby Price High, we hate to leave you, but we must part; We ' ll miss the toiling teachers who struggled with such art; And to our dearest classmates, we bid you adieu. And after graduation, we ' ll still be loving you. And as we travel upward and try to succeed, May God forever bless you and keep you safe indeed. We hope that you will remember the thanks we give to you. And after graduation, we ' ll still be loving Dear Price we hate to leave you, but we must part; We ' ll miss our friends and loved ones. Who struggled with such art; We ' ll miss the clubs and projects and things we loved to do, But most of all, dear Price High, we ' ll all be missing you. Chorus : W,e shall meet, maybe again someday; We shall meet, hand in hand along the way. The Statistician ' s Report I, George Goodman, statistician of the Class of ' 58, will hereby attempt to give you a summary of the idiosyncrasies of our class. Most of us will graduate at the tender ages of seventeen or eighteen with the exception of Rob¬ ert Johnson and Curtis Atkins who have lost track of their ages, and Agnes Partee who is only six¬ teen. Thomas Steele, Robert Ervin and George Smith are our only veterans. The shortest girls in the class are Lallage Ogles¬ by and Janie Morris. The shortest boy is Joe Pat¬ terson who says, I ' m a little piece of leather, but I ' m well put together . The tallest girls are La Frieta McMullen, Mary Wilkins and Lottie Robin¬ son, while James Martin, Price Brown and Melvin Reid are the tallest boys. Our favorite moving pictures are Sad Sack , The Young Lions , Peyton Place , Sayonara , and Marjorie Morningstar , but Leonard Graham has been rather sad since the Victory has closed. Chevrolets, Fords, Thunderbirds, Pontiacs and Dodges are our favorite cars, but Price Brown and Robert Ervin are still old-fashioned and stick to their Hope it don ' t, Hope it don ' t break down . Our favorite Rock ' n Roll musicians are Sam Cooke, Silhouettes, Pastels, and Bill Doggett, while Molly Alexander and Leroy Woods are nuts about the nationally-known Five Crowns. We goof behind such songs as Looking Back , Down On My Knees , Falling In Love , Maybe , Don ' t You Just Know It , and Head¬ ing for the Poorhouse , which is really where all of the seniors are going after publishing such a magnificent annual. These are our favorite songs but we know you ' re moaning We Can ' t Stand to See You Go . Many of us have earned letters in basketball and football, but Robert Massey has earned one in pool at J. Bridge ' s. Crew-neck sweaters, sack dresses and wrap¬ around skirts are most popular among the girls, while the boys are keeping pace in three, four and five button blazers, chino suits, Ivy League shirts and dark sun glasses. Instead of the bag look, Aljosie Baker prefers the gunny sack look. We have thirteen senior boys on the football team (most of them stars), one on the basketball squad (and he ' s the whole team). We have six girls on the basketball squad, twelve in the glee club and twenty-four in the band. Shrimp, lamb, barbecue, and spaghetti and meat balls are our favorite foods. However, Je¬ rome Ingram prefers sardines and peanut butter. Our favorite pastimes are movie going, dating, dancing, and various other hobbies, but a few of our erudite enjoy reading and seeing intel¬ lectual television programs. Most of us spend our spare time watching Gunsmoke , Climax , and Zorro , Playhouse 90 , and Have Gun Will Travel . These are among our favorite western programs but Melvin Reid prefers Have Feet Will Travel on East Mon¬ roe Street and Little Rascals . Our favorite subjects are General Business, Algebra II, English IV and Physics. Charles Par- tee ' s favorite classes are study hours because he has three or four of them. Our favorite hangouts are the Youth Center, Bea ' s Comeback, Skyline Cafe, Wilkin ' s Snack Bar, with the exception of Robert Johnson and Charles Hardin who, for unknown reasons, have to be home before the sun goes down. In our class we have twins, Cora and Ora Rob¬ ertson. Our class is very fond of them. The class ' s biggest eater is A. T. Turner, while some of the class members seem to think your humble servant is running a good race. Our gifted singers are Joyce Ellis and Charles Hardin, while Elaine Connor and Cletus Gibson were unfortunate not to have such a gift, but have a Ph.D. in talkin g. Evelyn McClain and Sarah Leach are two of our best writers, while Joe Patterson and Barbara Smarr are still printing Greek. Most of our vocabulary consists of money , food , and love , while Lloyd Yarborough stupe¬ fies us with his eloquent vocabulary. ' -m, % ■ ■ m NEW CAFETERIA Consolidation IMPRESSIONS OF THE JUNIOR HIGH DEPARTMENT There was something new when Price High School opened for business in September for the 1957-1958 school year. First, there were the new buildings— the cafeteria and the senior high wing—and the completely renovated main wing. And second, there was an almost entirely new educational climate with the coming of the seventh and eighth grades from Lincoln and Monroe Street Elemen¬ tary Schools to form the new junior high department. Naturally, there had to be a period of adjustment for the new junior high students and the senior high students as well. This adjustment was made very rapidly with no apparent ill-effects being suffered by any segment of the newer and bigger Price Junior-Senior High School family. Many educational as well as social advantages can be seen as having been derived from the type of organization completed and the use made of personnel and facilities for the junior high department. Students in this section have ex¬ pressed happiness at not having to face only one teacher every period of every day throughout the year. The personnel responsible for assisting junior high teachers with their classes as well as giving direct instruction in physical education, industrial arts and crafts, and music, have been instrumental in making the educa¬ tional life of the new students well-rounded and enriching. Students have been afforded a wider variety of educational pursuits than they have ever enjoyed before. They have been accepted in the full life of the school to a degree that leaves little to be desired. Groups to which they belong include the Junior Glee Club, Library Science Club, Student Council, Safety Patrol, Junior Varsity Basket¬ ball Team, Little Sisters, Little Brothers, and Band. Engaging in these types of activities will no doubt make for an ease in these students ' adjustment to the senior high mode of life as well as currently allowing them outlets for their social well-being. The writer feels that the idea of a junior-senior high school type of organiza¬ tion such as is possessed here at Price will reap even greater benefits in the years to come. He feels that the school wasted no time in getting started in this new venture. At year ' s end much can be seen as being accomplished in making the lives of students more enriching, more enjoyable, and at the same time more challenging. May the years ahead prove our faith in a bigger and better Price Junior-Senior High School that will continue to lift our boys and girls out of the darkness of ignorance and into the light of understanding necessary for a better community and a better world.
