THE PRICEAN Published by the 1957 SENIOR CLASS OF PRICE HIGH SCHOOL SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA UC UBRA SALISBURY, N C Foreword The class of 1957 hereby presents this annual. It includes written and pictorial features that we shall cherish for many years. As we look forward, it is our hope that other classes may be inspired to present a better annual than this one. We hope, also that all the standards, and traditions of dear Price will always be kept high. Above all we trust that the future senior classes will never fail to express their gratitude to those who have guided them into an appreciation of all that is good, beautiful, and true. We offer our sincere gratitude to Superintendent J. H. Knox and Mr. S. O. Jones our principal, for their supervision and leadership throughout our high school years. To the members of the faculty and to our patrons and parents, we offer our deepest appreciation. We especially wish to thank Mr. W. L. Miller and Mrs. A. A. Lancaster, our senior advisors, for their patient guidance in all of our class activities. As we go to press we desire to express our thanks to Rowan Printing Com¬ pany, the Earle Studio, and to the many business firms, organizations, and patrons that have made it possible for us to publish this annual. Bernard Feaster, Editor-in-Chief Samuel Leazer, Business Manager Freddie Evans, Chairman Advertising Committee Dedication MISS A. E. MARIE WEEKS The class of ' 57 dedicates this annual to Miss A. E. Marie Weeks, who for nineteen years was teacher of English and history, and director of the school chorus. Her diligence, interest, high standards, thoroughness, and her ability to produce singing groups of superior quality have left an indelible influence upon our class and upon the ma ny other classes that she taught. Although Miss Weeks was forced to retire because of ill health, she will ever remain in the hearts and minds of the pupils, teachers, parents, and friends. The Superintendent MR. J. H. KNOX To the Graduating Class of 1957: I wish to congratulate all members of the 1957 Senior Class of Price High School upon the successful completion of the high school course of study. My hope is that the knowledge, the associations, the services, and the skills all acquired, enjoyed, and developed will enable each of you to serve better and effectively in the years ahead, whatever your sphere of activity. The school system stands ready to assist you in whatever way the future. We hope that you will continue your associations with School in the years to come. Your services in building a stronger effective school program are needed and will be welcomed. we can in Price High and more June 4, 1957 Sincerely yours, J. H. Knox, Superintendent Price High Schoo The accomplishments made in this memorable institute will ever be an inspiration to us as we strive to reach higher goals in life. With gratitude, we shall always keep in mind, the solid foundation which has been laid for us by our superintendent, principal and teachers. Our Retired Principa L. H. HALL The class of 1957 takes pleasure in following other classes in saluting Mr. L. H. Hall, our retired principal. For thirty-six years he was the leader of the Negro Division of Public Schools in Salisbury. As principal of Price he was able to inspire many pupils who have now become successful. We salute Mr. Hall as a great educator and a great citizen. Since 1911 he has been superintendent of the Sunday School of Moore ' s Chapel; he has been trustee of the same church for twenty-two years. Mr. Hall has served as Tenant Interviewer for the Housing Projects, member of the Recreation Commission, member of the Interracial Council, Chairman of the Rowan Division of Boy Scouts, Secretary to the National Alumni Association of Livingstone College. The City of Salisbury has honored Mr. Hall in three significant ways: a street has been named for him; the gymnasium and shop building were named in his honor; he has been appointed as member of the Board of Education of the city. The Principa m r ‘ jirrvif rw rim n nr MR. S. O. JONES I am happy to congratulate you on the publication of the 1957 Pricean. Your enthusiastic cooperation and your willingness to work are clear indications that you have the ability to meet and solve difficult problems. The same qualities which you used in the completion of this annual—cooperation, industry, thoroughness, foresight, good taste, and, yes, cheerfulness—will help you meet life ' s situations with a high degree of success. May God bless you, and may you always nurture the desire to give consecrated service for the advancement of humanity. S. O. JONES Principal Facu ry Miss Sara L. May we undertake the responsibilities ahead of us, and strive to make one step at a time but always forward. Juanita Alexander Class Prophecy It is April 5th. An unusual noise comes from the Industrial Arts room. For the past week we have seen Robert Beaty carrying strange objects from the physics laboratory to the industrial arts room. When questioned, he remains quiet or answers, “Wait and see. Just before classes are dismissed, Richard Baker (who always finds a way to get in the hall) announced in the study hall that, “Beaty ' s Beacon was now a reality. And what is the Beaty ' s Beacon ? It is an instrument combining radar, television, atomic energy, and a new electrical discovery which is able to fortell coming events with 80% accuracy. Beaty says, he will use it just once for he is afraid to hear too much of the future. As class prophet, I am one of the few he allows in the secret ses¬ sion. Now listen while I read you the recording as I hear it. The beacon points to 1972, fifteen years hence. Barbara Hemphill has just arrived on the Trans World Airlines from her singing tour in France. Guess who her accompanist is? ? ? Maestro Gar¬ land Chambers of course. She was very glad to have Carolyn Jamison as her Air Line Hostess. In the Armed Forces, Robert Beaty, Leroy Reese, John McElhaney, and Bernard Feaster are high ranking officers. Freddie Evans with his assistant, James Guest, now owns the Salisbury Post. My! My! the years they have spent in that place! They have per¬ mitted Cylista McNeely to write a column called, News Around Town. Who could be better? In her latest column she stated that James Hawkins had been in the Army for eight years and yet remains a buck private. Ella McCullough has twenty children in her kindergarten, half of whom are her very own. She requested that Annie Rivers come to help her, that is if, Miss Annie Rivers can leave her job at the Chicago Y. W. C. A. Bessie Robinson and Juanita Alexander, both are famous writers and teachers. Although married, Rachel McKee has been able to keep her good job at Penn State. Her field is Home Economics. She is not Rachel McKee any lonaer. Her name is? The invention was too full of static to let us know. Betsye Williams, an artist, and Ruby Johnson, a designer are making good in Hollywood with the movie stars. Often when they have time off, they go to see James Vincent, William Jordan, Harold Ramsey, and John Childers play football for the Los Angeles All Pro ' s. There are quite a few new T.V. programs. Henry Lowery is the new, Wild Bill and Thomas Hovis is, Jingles. Myrtle McClain is the Private Secretary. In a basketball game between the Globe Trot¬ ters and the Sceoters, the 1957 graduates of Price Hiqh School are well represented. On the Globe Trotters team are, James Muskelly, Ray Reid, and Richard Baker. Yes, Richard Redd is the manager. In big and bright lights Robert Hunt and his golden trumpet are featured guest artist at the Macamba. On down on this program, Josephine Hart is the guest singer. Irma Carson is now reducing for the latest picture You ' ll Never Know. She had big hopes of Samuel Leazer producing this movie but, Mr. Leazer is now teaching Mathematics at Michigan State and he is really satisfied. Well, what do you know? Annie McGee is teaching voice culture in Cuba. (This voice must have made an enormous change) I never would think Arthur McNeely liked an imals so well. He is traveling with the Big Top , training seals. Constance Redfern Hasty is doing fine in New Mexico where she is manufacturing clay vases. Mary Neely is dean of Women at Tuskeege In¬ stitute. I am proud to hear that Arthur Henderson is World ' s Heavyweight Champion. Marilee Stewart is married to the football coach of A T University. Martha Kerr has remodeled the People ' s Choice cafe into a fabulous Cafe Royal, rated one of the best in the South. She specializes in Piza Pie. The teenagers are demanding more Pin-Ups of Peggy Jo Hunter. She is a model for Sax Fifth Avenue Store. Dorothy Lyerly is announcer for, W. B. T. She advertises twice a day for Shirley ' s Fashion for Tiny Tots. Shirley Taylor is making big sales of her gar¬ ments for little ones. She and Myrtle Feaster are in business together. Their slogan is, Dress your kiddies with the best. Judy Kirksey is teaching dramatics in Nevada. She has plenty of students and two have won Emmy Awards. Maxine Welborne is head nurse at Freeman ' s Hospital and happily married to Dr. C. J. Wells. Wait, things are a little cloudy. I see Wynolia Hawkins as secretary to Nat King Cole. Charlotte Gaither is the Paris buyer for Macy ' s New York Department Store. AAiss Levonia Middleton is Laboratory Techni¬ cian at Rowan Memorial. Mary Frances Walker owns a beach; her life guard is Edward Harrison. At this beach also is Esther Kerns, who is respon¬ sible for the girls swimming class. Raemi Lancaster is teaching organ in Washing¬ ton, D. C. Her best student is my former class¬ mate, Virginia Kerns ' daughter. The invention gets a little hard to hear so Beaty puts a few drops of magic oil on it; here is what it says: Wilalma Bozeman is now Madame Shelia, the successor to Marianne Anderson. Why, I ask, is she madame and not miss ? Beaty Beacon goes blank. Well, I am satisfied, I suppose, yet if the invention is only 80% accurate, how much is true, and how much is false? Yes, I dipped into the future, far as human eye could see, saw the visions of the world, and all the wonders that would be. Wilalma Bozeman Class Poem Farewell to our classmates and teachers too, To our schoolmates we now must say adieu; And dear Price High, that we love so dear, We ' ll always remember you, whether far or near. We have striven to reach this goal for years; Sometimes through laughter, sometimes through tears No matter how dark and dreary the way, We have always looked to a brighter day. Farewell to our parents, farewell to our friends; Our days at dear Price High have come to an end. With our hopes for the future, and our heads held high We ' ll never forget you, dear old Price High. Let ' s love one another, let ' s strive for the right; Let ' s work for the good life with all our might. Let ' s honor our leaders, lift those who are weak; Let ' s always endeavor God ' s favor to seek. The shortest girls in the class are Carolyn Jamison and Bessie Robinson. The shortest boy is Ray Reid. The tallest girls are Myrtle Feaster, Betsye Williams, Raemi Lancaster, Annie Clay- borne and Cylista McNeely. The largest boys are James Vincent and Arthur Henderson. The tallest boys are Ernest Goodrum, Bernard Feaster and James Muskelly. Most of the seniors will graduate at the age of eighteen, with the exception of Harold Ramsey, James Hawkins, Freddie Evans, Irma Carson, An¬ nie Rivers, Rachel McKee, and Ernest Goodrum. They will be seventeen this year, but Raemi Lancaster will only be sixteen. A few other graduates will be nineteen and twenty. Bernard Feaster is the only veteran in the class. Our favorite subjects are algebra, science and Negro History. Harold Ramsey prefers something easy like study and physical education. The girls ' favorite automobiles are Fords, Buicks, and Oldsmobiles, but Wynolia Hawkins and Joyce Irby prefer the Big M . Our favorite Rhythm and Blues Singers are Fats Domino , Little Richard , and Ivory Joe Hunter . We like such songs as Blue Monday , The Girl Can ' t Help It , and Since I Met You Baby . The cutest girl in the class is Irma Carson. The statistician believes that Charlotte Gaither is the prettiest girl, I ' m sure you will agree with us. What about it boys? I have talked with a few of the girls and they think all of the boys are rather handsome, so lets call it a draw. Raemi Lancaster, C. J. Wells, and Peggy Hunter have the best personalities in the senior class. The girls do various things to pass away their time. Such as, looking at television, going danc¬ ing, going to the movies, reading comics, and visiting, but Mary L. Stewart and Martha Kerr prefer staying in bed. The boys like all sports. Most likely you will find them in the pool hall, shooting pool. A few of the boys like to travel but Robert Beaty prefers visiting on Graham Street. When choosing dates the boys go for the girls in the lower classes, Why is this? They are more reasonable or shall I say less sophisticated. Don ' t get me wrong, the senior girls are nice but they are too sophisticated. The girls prefer tall dark and handsome men, Wynolia Hawkins tells me Price has plenty of boys that fit that description. Now girls you don ' t have to leave town to find a tall dark and handsome man. You are surrounded by them. As we all know People ' s Choice and Bea ' s Comback are our favorite cafes. However, Mon¬ days and Fridays are our youth center nights. Our favorite film stars are Shelly Winters, Errol Flynn, Grace Kelly, and Robert Preston, however; Harold Ramsey likes Marilyn Monroe. The majority of us enjoy comedies, romances, adventures, and Western pictures. The television fans enjoy Toast of The Town , Lux Video Theatre , The Late Show , and The Ford The¬ atre but Samuel Leazer prefers Annie Oakley . The radio fans favor Randy who plays all the rhythm and blues songs. They also listen to Nashville, Tennessee, and Buckley ' s Music Shop, however; James Hawkins prefers Sleepie Joe and his Fairy Tales. We have twelve senior boys on the football team, six on the basketball team, four girls on the basketball team, seventeen seniors in the Glee Club, and fourteen in the band. The sodas most popular among us are grape and orange, but Shirley Taylor prefers a Coca- Cola. Our favorite foods are ham, steak, and liver. However, James Muskelly prefers pinto beans. The colleges that have been chosen by the seniors to attend are North Carolina College, A and T., Winston-Salem Teacher ' s College, Shaw University, and Livingstone College. We have forty-eight students planning to continue their education, ten going to service, and seven to become housewives. Among the forty-eight, they are planning to be lawyers, doctors, teach¬ ers, musicians, and beauticians. Your statistician and advisors wish the class of 57 the best of luck and happiness. It is true that Price High has had many fine classes to leave this wonderful school. The class of 57 is the greatest class in the school ' s history and will remain the best class for many years to come. This class will never be forgotten. I hereby sign my name as statistician of this class. HALL GYMNASIUM C-Iu e w Price Sports News The Price High School Red Devil ' s football squad under the direction of Coach S. W. Lancaster, had an unsuccessful season this year, in the sense of winning games, yet it was successful in that the boys learned new techniques for the coming years. The Red Devils re-entered the triple A division of the NCNHSAA. Leading the Red Devils in the return to the triple A competition was Arthur Henderson at halfback, and with James Vincent, Harold Ramsey, and Freddie Evans, on the forward wall. Ray Reid was the team ' s leading scorer with 18 points, while Robert Ervin, William Jordan and Arthur Henderson led the team in the yardage. James Vincent and Ray Reid were voted the most valuable players of the season and Freddie Evans, the most improved player with his defensive and offensive playing. The Red Devils were honored to have two of their players selected to participate in the first Negro Shrine Bowl game which was held in Durham, North Carolina. They were William Jordan, and James Vincent. Richard Walker, Edward Mitchell, and Robert Beaty also turned in fine work for the Red Devils. The senior football players whose names will never be forgotten by fellow students are: James Vincent, Arthur Henderson, Ray Reid, Ernest Goodrum, Garland Chambers, James Muskelly, Robert Hunt, Harold Ramsey, John Childers, Leroy Reese, Robert Beaty, William Jordan and Freddie Evans. An annual event of the football squad of Price High School has been the Thanksgiving program and the giving of baskets of food to the needy families. This year the teachers, students and surrounding grocery stores donated the equivalent of $80.00 worth of food. The Price High School Red Devils returned to the hardwood to begin the basketball season on Decem¬ ber 18th. The Devils won eight games and lost only three. The Devils were then qualified to play in the North Carolina High School elimination tournament in Charlotte. They lost to Concord 56 to 54, which showed how evenly matched the teams really were. James Martin and Ray Reid were the high scorers for the Devils during the season. Martin totaled 235 points and Ray Reid 125. Ramsey and Baker were outstanding performers, Baker with 79 points and Ramsey with 81 points. This season ended the high school basketball career of Ray Reid, James Muskelly, Lovie Reid, Richard Baker, Harold Ramsey, and James Vincent. Watch for these fellows in college basket¬ ball! ! ! The girls basketball team, under the direction of Mrs. B. D. Lee had a fair season this year in winning two and losing three. The most valuable player was Barbara Hemphill. The most improved player was Evangeline Salmon. Our girls basketball team feels that the team of 1958 will be the best in the conference.
