V, PRICEAN Published By The SENIOR CLASS OF PRICE HIGH SCHOOL SALISBURY, NORTH CAROLINA VOLUME 38 FOREWORD Our activities during this school year represent a variety of interests. In this annual we are presenting some of the features of our school life that we have appreciated and enjoyed. We hereby offer our sincere thanks to Mr. J. H. Knox, our super¬ intendent, Mr. S. O. Jones, our principal and Mr. W. L. Miller, and Mrs. Abna Lancaster, our advisors, for their guidance, inter¬ est and leadership. To our parents and patrons, we extend our sincere gratitude. As we go to press we wish to express our thanks also to Rowan Printing Company, The Earle Studio, and the many Salisbury business firms, and organizations who have made it possible for us to publish this annual. For all advertisements furnished, and all donations given, the Senior Class is genuinely grateful. BARBARA JEAN McCLAIN Editor DEDICATION We, the members of the class of ' 55 hereby dedicate this annual to our beloved advisor, Mrs. A. A. Lancaster, in recogni¬ tion of her never tiring cooperation, vigilant guidance, patience, and her wholesome and understanding interest in our personal problems. We cannot begin to express our sincere appreciation for the many things that she has helped us accomplish. She has been a thorough instructor, and a mother as well. One of our goals is to follow her example of fine Christian leadership. Thus, her sympathetic understanding, her generosity, and her liberal kind¬ ness to all will cause her to remain in our hearts forever. OUR SUPERINTENDENT J. H. KNOX, Superintendent Salisbury City Schools April 4, 1955 I wish to extend my cordial good wishes to all members of the J. C. Price High School organization. Sincerely yours, T. H. KNOX, Superintendent J. C. Price High School Our Principal S. O. JONES, Principal May I take this opportunity to congratulate you on the pub¬ lication of this Annual. The Statistician Report I Nelson Pharr, having been chosen as Statistician for the class of ' 55 will strive to do my best to uphold this position by giving you an analysis of the class of ' 55. Considering our ages I find that most of us will graduate at 17 or 18 with the exception of Delaney White (who admits he has lost tract of his age,) and Mollucye Spratley who is fifteen. The shortest girl is Kay F. Chawlk and the shortest boy is Garland Gaither, though Deanna Redfern is 5 feet, 71 2 inches and George Tugman is 6 feet, 3 inches respectively and both are still growing. The girls favorite sports are: basketball, softball, and dancing, while the boys go for basketball and football. Willie Stewart prefers checkers. He says they are much easier to move. The girls spend most of their leisure time at the movies, dating and dancing. Mary Wiseman spends her ' s flirting. The boys go for sports and pool but Norris Currence says he prefers to stay home. Who believes him? I know I don ' t. The class has favorite types of movies. They are romances, comedies, and tragedies, but James Campbell said he would pay anything to see a good cowboy picture. Mercurys, Fords, Cadillacs, Lincolns, and Oldsmobiles are our favorite cars, though William Byers says he prefers anything rideable. Our favorite classes are English, Algebra, and History. Cleveland Harris prefers Study; he says you learn more and hear more. V neck sweaters, skirts, and Bermuda socks are the fashions for the girls, while the intelligent young men wear suits, tab collar shirts, and sport coats. The class ' s favorite candies are Mounds, Almond Joy, and 5th Avenues, but Odell Watson prefers suckers and Peppermint Sticks. He says you get more for your money. Classical, Waltzes, Be-Bop, and Jazz are the class favorite music, Johnnie Mae Linebeger prefers Hillbilly. She says it has more rhythm. Most of the television fans prefer Arthur Godfrey , Strike It Rich , and The Colgate Comedy Hour . The boys prefer sport programs. Fried Chicken and Sea Foods are the favorites of the class, Elijah Alexander recommends pork and beans and potted meat. In our class we have twenty-two students who plan to attend College, nine who plan to join the Armed Services, four who plan to attend Beauty Culture School, and the rest plan to be house-wives and workers. Most of our ambitions are to be; Teachers, Secretaries, Business Firm Owners, Manual Trade Instructors, Medical Surgeons, Nurses, Beauticians, Electrical Engineers, and Lawyers. The majority of us are Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterians. We also have mem¬ bers of other demoninations. Statistics show that this is one of the most fun-loving and intelligent classes that has attended Price High School. On the football team, seven lettermen come from our class. Four seniors are on the basketball team. Fourteen are members of the Glee Club. While twenty-one seniors belong to the band. We are forty- eight in number. You can see that every member uses his or her talent as best he can. Having done my best as Statistician I hereby sign my name: NELSON LEONARD PHARR, Statistician Witnesses DOROTHY WASHINGTON Charles McKinney Class History In 1951, 95 inexperienced students entered Price High School as Freshmen. We were divided into three divisions because of such a great number. Our advisors were Mrs. W. M. Williams, Mrs. H. C. Pope, and Mr. J. W. Nicholson. We soon realized that our education at Price was coming to a close and with this in mind we iriea iO do some of the things we knew if we didrRt do them now we would never do them. In October we were invited to attend the Annual Senior Day activities at A T. College, Greensboro, North Carolina. We were among a hundred other schools represented. Our chaperones were Mrs. A. A. Lancaster, Mrs. E. M. McClain, Mr. W. L. Miller and, Mr. A. Monroe, a former graduate of A T College. The trip was enjoyed by everyone. Thinking about parting brought a great deal of sadness to me until I thought of our combined physics, chem¬ istry, biology laboratory. I decided that this room of mystery probably could solve the problem of my sad¬ ness since it held so many unusual contrivances. One evening after school I went into this room and opened a box that had always been closed. I found therein a peculiar instrument looking somewhat like a telescope but having at its end a screen like that of a television. I attached a wire to an electric unit and immediately there flashed on the screen these words—“1955”-“1970”. On one side, of the screen I could see a picture of my friend Odell Watson, president of our class. He had his usual smile and seemed as jolly as ever. There was nothing unusual to that. In a few seconds I saw the 1970 part of the screen loom up and there I beheld Watson seated in front of a large desk with the word President on it. His firm was an internationally known engineering company. He was preparing for a confer¬ ence with the President of the United States and the Queen of England who wanted to see his plans for the eight-lane bridge to be built over the Atlantic. By a slight mistake I turned the instrument just a little and there I saw Geneva Jones teaching English in Mrs. Lancaster’s room at Price. By turning again I saw Irvin Hunt with a large contracting business with offices on Market Street in Greensboro. Edmond Hasty was teaching Industrial Arts at A. T. College. In the same city, Deanna Redfem was head surgeon at the Redfern General Hospital with Annie Lois Woods as superintendent of nurses. At the Metropolitan Opera House Clarice Gaither was singing in an opera written by Elaine Lash. Norris Currence had the hottest combo in the land. He played the trumpet and in the famous night spots there was no standing room when the “Currence Combo” played. Joan Montgomery was on a singing tour in Europe where the newspapers acclaimed her as “the greatest”. Margaret Scott was teaching voice at the University of California. There Betty Smoot was teaching general business. Turning the dial a little I saw a big baseball game in progress. Garland Gaither and Robert Abel were stars with the New York Yankees. In the stands, James Campbell was writing rapidly. He was sports writer for the New York Times, and owned a small news¬ paper in North Carolina. After the game Nathaniel Lowery rushed out to congratulate two classmates and handed both of them passes. Lowery was playing professional football in Canada. He was known as “Nat. the famous quarterback”. Resting my eyes a moment I wondered what had become of Johnnie Lineberger. In just a second I saw 1955 light up. Johnnie Mae was collecting pennies for the Penny Queen drive. Then 1970 lighted up and behold Johnnie Mae was in a big car in front of the Lineberger General Motors Company which she and George Tugman owned. As she drove off she passed two well-dressed gentlemen coming out of a beautiful building. They were Matthew Phillips and Eddie Wal¬ lace who had starred on Art College. The car then passed the “Wiseman-Logan Modeling School” operated by Mary Wiseman and Phyllis Logan. At the comer I saw the car stop in front of “Dot’s Smart Shop”, the leading dress store of Detroit, owned and operated by Dorothy Ford. A gust of wind came into the laboratory and the sound unit came on. I heard Dorothy Ford tell Johnnie Lineberger that she had just bought a hundred new dresses designed by Dorothy Washington. Miss Ford wondered how Dorothy Washington found time to de¬ sign as she took so much time looking after her famous husband and her very cute girl triplets. Another twist of the dial and I saw Harvey Chawlk and Willie Stewart discussing a case to come. before the Supreme Court. Both were famous lawyers in a firm known as “Chawlk. Stewart and White”. Th$y were waiting on Delaney White, their other partnfer, to join them. As he approached, I heard him saj , “Sorry, fellows, but I overstayed my time talking to Senator McKinney. As you know, Charles has just been appointed member of the United Nations and. I went in his office to congratulate him.” He added this: “Guess what? United Nations Building has a new beauty parlor. It is operated by Pauline Jones and Bessie Fair. Delegates from all over the world patron¬ ize this parlor. Vernal Coleman has a studio beside the parlor to let the ladies have their pictures taken and Cleveland Harris is head of the library at United Nations.” In North Carolina State College Barbara Partee was teaching philosophy and Angerlia Bradshaw was pro¬ fessor of Spanish. John McCorkle was Dean of the College and Kay Chawlk was his secretary. James Holmes was visiting the college and giving an exhibi¬ tion game. He was manager of the Los Angeles Rams. I heard Holmes tell Kay that Mollucye Spratley was married to a rich oil dealer in Texas and was very happy. The dial was turned again and I saw James Brother- ton, the first six-star general. He was sending a wire to William Byers accepting his invitation to go with him on a trip in Byers’ yacht. He stated that Admiral William Smith could not join them as he was in con¬ ference with the Secretary of the Navy. As Brotherton left the telegraph office, he stopped by a newsstand owned by James Jones. On the head¬ lines of the paper I saw in large letters “Nelson Pharr accepts position as Ambassador to France”. In another column I saw that Janie Krider’s School of Business was to dedicate a new building called “Powers’ Hall” in honor of her business teacher at Price. I paused a minute to think of the wonderful machine that could see into the future. I remembered that I hadn’t seen Barbara McClain or Floyd Massey or Joyce Muskelly. I turned the machine and saw a pretty young high school freshman girl talking to a handsome freshman boy. They were guides for the State Student Council meeting at Price. The girl was the daughter of Mrs. Joyce Muskelly, head of the Homemaking De¬ partment at Livingstone. The boy was Floyd Massey, III, who said he planned to be a business man like his father, Floyd Massey, Jr., who owned the Massey Food Stores. Both pupils said they hoped the meeting would soon be over so they could study their Math lesson for teacher, Miss Barbara McClain. There was only one more prophecy I wanted to see. I was almost afraid to turn the dial, but I did get the nerve. I saw myself as head of an Industrial Arts School for Boys. I was happily married and had a lovely home. Just then the picture faded. I was satis¬ fied. I put the machine back in its box and wondered if all of these pictures would come true. Who knows? Let’s see! —ELIJAH ALEXANDER Last Will And Testament We, the Senior Class of Price High School, saying farewell to this school and its members, and being of sound mind and body, do hereby make and declare this our will and testament. James Holmes and Nelson Pharr were voted the most valuable players of the season. Ray Reid was the most improved player of the team. We are looking forward to a good season next year in triple A, for we will have 22 lettermen returning. The seniors on the roster are: Nelson Pharr, James Holmes, Nathaniel Lowery, Garland Gaither, Vernal Coleman, Cleveland Harris, Edmond Hasty, Elijah Alexander, and Delaney White. The annual activity of the football squad of Price has been the Thanksgiving assemble Program. At our annual assembly program we gave thanks for the gifts which were given to many people. This year the teachers and students donated the equiva¬ lent of $70 worth of food. Varsity letters were given to the 22 outstanding players of the 1954 season. The Price High School Red Devils returned to the basketball court December ninth. The Devils won eleven games and lost four. James Holmes led the team in total scoring, and was followed closely by James Hawthorne. The Red Devils won the Salisbury Center tournament. The most valuable player for the Red Devils basketball team were James Holmes and James Hawthorne. The most improved was Donald Judge. The girls basketball team, under the direction of Mrs. B. D. Lee, had a fair season this year winning eight, losing six, and tying one. The most valuable player for the season was Geraldine Ormond. The most improved player was Barbara Goodjohn. Our girl ' s team was made up primarily of juniors and sophomores. We feel that the 1956 team will be one of the best in our district. FOOTBALL SCORES Price 6.Mt.
