This building was erected in 1893 at the location of the present Training School. ,IE STCRY OF P.I.H. . Because there has been another extensive addition to our school, We are presenting the story of Presque Isle High School in its entirety. The first Presque Isle High School, as such, was erected in 1893 with Mr. Henry Perkins as principal. The wooden structure was built on Academy Street near the present site of Training School. During this period, a school news- paper called the NORM was begun. In 1910 a larger school with Mr. E. M. Libby as principal was built on the corner of Third and Blake Streets. The courses taught were college, commer- cial', and agricultural. In October of 1914, Presque Isle High School sold its first publication of the FLYER, the only high school Weekly in Maine. An orchestra was organized by 1915, and the high school was Well on the way to its present size. However, during the Winter term of 1921 the building was destroyed by fire. Presque Isle High School in 1910 at the site of the present Cunningham School. This building burned in 1921. Presque Isle High School as of 1922 In 1922 a new building was constructed, and the following year Mr. Franklin S. Cunningham, a math teacher, assumed the office of principal. That year a contest was held to find an appropriate name for the yearbook which was to re- place the newspaper. Frances Lowry won the two dollar prize by reversing the high school initials and spelling Ship . A school library was opened the same year and a band was started soon afterwards, The 1930's proved to be equally eventful. Presque Isle won the state basket- ball championship in 1933, a prize coveted every year since. Interesting to note is the fact that the team had to do its traveling by train, About the same time, Westfield was included in the school district and a need for buses arose. Before 1940 a new wing was constructed, adding a larger gymnasium and more classroom space. Enriching the school's growing traditions was an official song written by Delia Houghton, Due to the labor shortage caused by World War Il, a harvest recess of three weeks was established to allow students to help with the autumn potato harvest, At this time high school football in Presque Isle was discontinued. In 1949 the original wing of the present school was constructed, and the old building was named Cunningham School in honor of Mr. Cunningham. The high , 'VIS'-A Presque Isle High School including 1939 addition. 'rf-Ftwqt, Presque Isle High School as of 1949. school was then reduced to a four year senior high school for grades nine through twelve, although the number of teachers had more than doubled the number on the faculty at the previous school. During the next ten years, physical education classes were discontinued for the lack of a gym. In 1959, however, a gym was built and a guidance department was established. In 1963 the school departments of Mapleton, Chapman, and Castle Hill joined with those of Presque Isle and Westfield to form School Administrative District Number One, the first consolidation in the state. The following year the freshman classes were moved to Cunningham and Skyway junior High Schools to provide needed room at the high school, Three ears later in 1965 some sad farewells were said as Mr Cunningham y , . retired after serving as principal of the high school for forty -two years. He was succeeded by the present principal, Mr. Hazen Moores. In 1968 a two-million-dollar addition was completed. This now gives Presque Isle an extensive vocational high school which is one of the most modern in the state . In conclusion, the yearbook staff would like to thank Mr, Cunningham, the Pres que Isle Historical Society, and the librarians of the Turner Memorial Library for their help in compiling the story of Presque Isle High School. :V -'al 1:11, in i' :Ewa fiwfl V -L : I ' 7'1 t1 F521 W L'7.'rf.j! 1112! 1: , .. , ' Presque Isle High School as of 1959. 6 I l FRANKLIN S. The many up-to -date facilities which are offered should help to make our educational experiences more enjoyable and rewarding. The enlarged principal's office com plex provides Mr. Moores with a carpeted private office. Connected by a hallway to the principal's office is the spacious and brightly furnished guidance office. lt provides a well stocked guidance library as well as private offices for the guidance counselors. Students will find the atmosphere quite relaxing while going through the harrow ing experience of choosing a college. New physics and chemistry laboratories have been constructed . . . . . and are furnished with the most modern of high school laboratory equipment. 10 The faculty of P. LH. S. has finally risen to the status where it de- serves a lace to et awa ' from it all The new teachers lounges P E ' 3' - look to be just the places for our teachers to relax during a particu- larly hard day. A modern clinic has been constructed in the former location of the kitchen. There are several new academic classrooms which are well-lighted and furnished with new and comfortable classroom equipment. it E ii, 3 5 Our new library iS a spacious, well- lighted room with a restful atmosphere. A lounging area, two conference rooms, a librarian's office, and a teachers' area provide the best facilities for everyone. Named for former superintendent Roland B, Andrews, the library has plenty of room for expansion and space for as many as 15, OOO books. 11 The home economics department encompasses a large area of the new building. The kitchen and food lab have four kitchen areas which are equipped with modern kitchen appliances. A living room area, large sewing area and laundry room constitute the remainder of the home economics facilities. The observance room, used for teaching child develop- ment, has as its main feature a one-way window which enables the natural actions of children to be observed. The bright and airy cafeteria which doubles as a study hall is one of the finest school cafeterias in the state. The kitchen, equipped more efficiently than the previous one, is adaptable to the preparing of large quantities of food. 12 mm, . 'Q Near the cafeteria is the driver education room which is equipped with twelve Mark V Drivotrainers which have both automatic and standard transmissions. Films are used as teaching aids. ,-Xlso near the cafeteria is a class- room in which a course in quantiq foods is offered. Students here get experience in preparing meals for large groups of people. 1 The automotive shop is a large area where students are given instrumjon in basic auto-mechanics. Learning by doing is practiced regularly. The building trades shop is operated as an actual builder's shopg the students design, sketch, and lay out their own work. The main project is constructing actual build- ings which, upon completion, are disas- sembled, transported to appropriate sites i and reconstructed. 13 The agricultural rooms, with more machines and storage space than ever before, make possible the expansion of thc vocational agriculture program. The Industrial Arts Shop, also large, pro- vides industrial arts students with many new and long-needed facilities. An arts and crafts course is also offered in the Industrial Arts Department. Soundproofed, perhaps fortunately, the band 'Y ' room has more practice area, private practice rooms, and instructors' offices. Our new superintendent, Mr. joseph MCBIiH2, is fortunate to have a new and spacious office complex . 14 The business education department now consists of four typing rooms, stenography rooms, and a distributive education room. There are enough typewriters for all students and tape recorder systems for use in practicing shorthand. gs 'x to l i ttiissr i s. e- t ga ,J .... The girls of Pll-IS :ire very fortunate to have Cl new and large gynin:isinin in which to take one of their favorite courses, physi ed. The gym also provides for Lin expanded program of girls' athletics. Presque lsle High School is now one ofthe niost modern and Well equipped secondary schools in the Northeastern United States. Realizing this, we hope that the students of PIHS will live up to their good reputation and treat their outstanding school with the care and pride that it deserves. 15 f --. Carroll E. Parker DEDICATION To a friend Who, through his frank and sincere approach, taught us the importance of honesty and individuality and made learning a fascinating and challenging experience. His concern for us as individuals and his dedication to our learning have made him a teacher whom we will never forget. It is with a great deal of pleasure and pride that the Class of 1969 dedicates this edition of the SHIP to Mr. Carroll E. Parker. 1 ff' - ff W ,I Z Z iii? yx X! X XE . ff'fv1,x,mFr! A fl . , 1 QUQDSUZFQ ,HUM A V I have enjoyed being associated With you, the class of 1969, and Iwish you success as you leave Presque Isle High School. It appears that success has become an extremely important force in our lives today. It is not measured by scholastic achievement aloneg neither can it be measured by a popularity rating. Success can be measured by a combination of realities: the ability to think and to reason, the ability to get along with others, the ability to respect and to honor your country and its laws, the ability to accept both victory and defeat gracefully, and above all, the ability to realize that no matter how much you have learned, there is still much, much more to be learned. As seniors, you have reached a point at which you are able to measure the success of your high school years. A segment of your lives is finishedg however, you can not stop here. Each of you must go his sepa- rate Way to make his own mark in this world. My best Wishes go With you. Sincerely Mr. Hazen A. Since October, l967, PIHS has held the presidencies of all three state YMCA youth programs--the Older Girls' Conference, the Older Boys' Conference, and the State Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y Cabinet. Four of our clubs were named Honor Clubs, the highest award that can be given to a club in the state. Only three other clubs in Maine were so honored. Five of the state's twelve delegates to the National Hi-Y Assembly in Minnesota were from PIHS and one of the two Maine dele- gates to the Inter-American YMCA Youth Con- ference in Brazil was from PIHS. Presque Isle Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y were fur- ther honored by having an article about their activities appear in the national magazine, HI-Y WAYS. A write-up on the National Hi-Y Assembly which appeared in PARADE maga- zine featured two PIHS delegates. Our advisors are two of only four advisors in Maine who have received the jeweled ad- visor's pin, the highest nationalrecognition that can be given to an advisor. Presque Isle Hi-Y and Tri -Hi-Y members are proud of the services they perform, the levels of achievement they attain, and the credit they bring to themselves, their school, and their community. 197 MICHAEL GARDINER Delegate to National Hi-Y Assembly. Each one of us as citizens, not only of these great states, but also of the World, has an obligation to fulfill his potential. Now that We are free in the World to meet the challenge of developing that potential, We must be determined and aggressive enough to undertake the tasks and to surmount the hurdles which may face us. Each one must find his own road, whether it be a Well-paved highway or a country laneg the climax of one's life is knowing that one has been instrumental in promoting the advancement of human relations for all of mankind. As a leader of our times, Robert Kennedy said, Some men see things as they are and say 'Why?' I dream things that never were and say 'Why not'?' This is our challenge! We must accept it and make the impossible dream come true. X ' ug xp X 'Nr . A, R ffl -a if 5 M4 ffl f I l , M ,fy ls - xl' 5-HIM' N f iw we ' r l l .J I :- af 214 UIQ . V My ,Y ' M ..
