Hickey. fDebatz'n.5 For the first time since 1932 a formal debating club was organized this year at Presque Isle under the expert direction of Charles W. Radcliffe. The team has made excellent progress and, up to this date, has won nineteen out of twenty-five debates and an opportunity to compete for the State championship at Bates Col- lege in April. In the most important series of debates to date, sponsored by the University of Maine, the squad made a surprisingly good showing while competing against some of the best teams in the State. The team of Wieden and Staples won five and lost one debate, but was eliminated in the semi-finals in a close decision won by Lewiston. The team of Shaw and Burleigh won four out of five debates and was eliminated by Orono, the eventual winner, in the quarter finals. Presque Isle was one of only three schools which had two undefeated teams in the quarter finals. At the county practice debate contest, Presque Isle tied for first place with the host team of Caribou with eleven wins and four losses. The team also gave two exhibition debates, one at the local Kiwanis Club and the other at the Fort Fairfield Grange. Considering the handicap of having to start with no previous debating experi- ence, the team should be commended for its excellent work. It is the hope of all that debating will once again take its place as one of the regular extracurricular activities of Presque Isle High School. The success of this year's team leads us to have high hopes for the future. HI-Y OFFICERS Seated: Larry Parker, Stuart Roderick, George Akeley, Standing: Mr. Bowden, Advisor: Ernest Hughes. U N' ' 1 1 , .2 i 1'11 fi '5 Q4 Great Teacher No one ever misses a biology class at Presque Isle High School unless it is absolutely necessary. Why? Because of the small, good-natured teacher named Glenn Chamberlain who has won the respect of students and adults alike. He is generally known as the finest high school. teacher in biology and chemistry in the New England area. His classes are informal, his lectures short, and his one de- mand is, Work, work, while you are in my classes. Colleges have tried to coax the balding professor away from Presque Isle but he has always refused and now has been here for twenty-six years. Not only is he a teacher but he is a writer also. He has written many books and pamphlets on flowers and the bird life of northern Maine. Aside from school his main interests are nature walks, chess, at which he is a master, and the piano. The latter is probably his favorite, his grand piano is always ready to bring forth a melody from Mozart, or a peaceful hymn from Brahms. He long ago gave up playing in chapel because chapel is compulsory and he said, I can feel when someone doesn't want to listen. One entire wall of his modest home is lined with records of the masters and they are played con- stantly. His house, after school, is usually full of boys, playing chess, listening to his music, or just eating his mints. Everyone knows his fondness for mints and often he has them with his coffee. His room is littered with five-pound boxes of mints and he nibbles on them constantly. Glenn is always teaching someone to play chess and loaning them books on the subject. He enjoys the thrill and excitement of chess as much as anyone younger enjoys a football game. When anyone who tries to tell him that chess is a game for old men, he only has to point to the countless pupils who play with him every noon hour. He is undoubtedly one of the finest chess players in this region, but he only says, I just push the pieces around. His school museum is large. He has a Herbarium, a place where mounted plants and flowers are kept, and it contains over fourteen hundred specimens. This makes it the largest in Aroostook, if not in Maine. Then there are shelves and shelves of animal life, everything from an oyster shell to a sawflsh's saw or bill. His classroom also includes four aquariums with different kinds of fish. Mr. Chamberlain will probably stay at Presque Isle for the rest of his life and he will surely teach for a long while. But when he is gone his laboratory will remain as a permanent monument. At night when the laboratory is dark, the air will smell of mints and his light laugh will echo' through the room. It will be a long time before Presque Isle forgets one of its finest teachers. Nothing, hey! beamed the king, with an elaborate wink at the maids-in- waiting. Hear that, girls? Modest, isn't he? Here roll him over! Let's have a look at the villian. Watch it girls-don't stand too close. He's still a magician, you know. Basil obligingly rolled him over with one paw. A cry went up from the ladies-in-waitingg a roar, from King Arthur. What's the meaning of this! This isn't Sweingali! This is my mayor. The Mayor of Camelot! cried the ladies-in-waiting. What's that? The Mayor of Camelot? queried the servants. Oh, no. Not the Mayor of Camelot! groaned Gundrun. 4 4 4 Oh, well, he thought, sometime he'd get another chance. That was just bad luck! As he reached for another potato to peel, he patted Basil on the head. Any- way, Basil still glistened and his armor still shone as never before. Of course, the king wouldn't let him wear it. But after he was through with his duties in the kitchen, he could take a look at it-that is, after he had taken it out of moth-balls! C. WlEnEN. , af '1 3g'N. . - 7 N t thus ls' 010 what . Day Dreams As I look up at the blue sky above, And oil to the valley below, I think of many things that I love, And of places where I'd like to go. I'd like to visit a queen or king, Or maybe a harem on the Nile, Or hear an ancient church bell ring, IVith singers chanting all the while. I'd like to see two knights of old, Battle together on sea or land, Shouting while jousting, oh, so bold, Trying to win a lady's hand. All of these things I'd like to see As I dream here today, In the fixture it may come to be, And I shall travel far away. Maine 1 am glad that I live in Maine Glad for the blue, blue skyg I am glad for the sun, the rain, And the clouds that go floating by. I am glad for the streams and brooks, I am glad for every little nook, I am glad for each country lane, I am glad that I live in Maine. Once these snappy misses run out onto the floor and start the cheers, our gym and all the fans seem to perk right up. The game takes on a new meaning and new spirit creeps into the players and really lifts them along. Imagine any important game of the year. The fans are hoarse from shouting, players are sweating and panting and everyone is going wild. Who quiets down the crowd for a player to take a shot from the foul line? Who attempts to keep good sportsmanship among the fans? Mfho leads the Yea, Blue-Yea, White? Yes, the cheerleaders! And not only the varsity but also the jay-V and Freshman cheerleaders. Many a preliminary game would have been dull but for some snap- py cheerleader who got some spirit into the fans. Yes, we are proud of our cheerleaders. Why shouldn't we be? just look at them! X A j. C. I., 59-22. Then the Hanscomnites traveled to Houlton's spacious gym where they were handed a 45-38 defeat. It was in the following three games that the boys were at their best, both in shooting and in teamwork. At Caribou the XfVildcats, paced by Lee Parker, slaught- ered the Vikings to the score of 57-32, and then the same week traveled down to Portland to trounce the Little Boy Blues, 50-36. They didn't look as sharp in de- feating Washburn but they still looked quite good in their shooting. At Bangor the boys played a very good Hoor game but couldn't seem to get their shooting eyes and were beaten to the tune of 48-37. In their next game the boys won their last game of the season, beating A. C. I. 43-26, in a game which many termed the roughest ever seen on the local court. It was following this game that the YVildcats began their six game losing streak. In their game with Houlton the Wildcats staged one of the greatest comebacks of the season only to lose out by a score of 54-53. At Stearns, a little later, the team saw an eleven point lead disappear as they lost the game, 70-50. Next came the 55-48 upset win by Caribou and then to top it off there was the 59-42 loss to Fort Fairfield. The Wildcats then met Bangor in the tournament and were beaten 43-37, but not before they staged another of their famous fourth quarter comebacks. The season ended at YVashburn where they lost, 64-44. Next year the Ividcats should have a banner season with such men as Lee Parker, Ralph Shaw, Dick Smith and Gary Beaulieu on the squad. These men all received their letters along with Seniors Dick Barressi, Al Proulx, Ernie Hughes and Walt Adams. F. F. A. BASKETBALL First Row: P. Campbell. C. Morris, C. Hayden C. Guerette. C. Estes. The V.'s, in reality the varsity's second team, is made up of juniors and Sophomores on their way up to the first team. This year, having only a few of last year's team back, Coach Dyer built his team around the up and coming Sophomores. The starting five for the season was composed of Dana Shaw, Clayton Day, james Humphrey, Rodney Coffin and John Lambert. The V.'s started the season off with a bang, winning twelve straight games. The lost the next three, however, and finished off the season b winnin the last Y - , n . Y 8 game. This gave them a season s record of thirteen wins and only three losses, an impressive score. Cross Coun try Although the cross country team this year didn't equal the exceptional record which they set last year it was felt all around that the season, as a whole, was a successful one. The team's record of four wins and only three defeats is quite remarkable if we consider the fact that in some of the meets several key men were unable to compete because of injuries or sore muscles. If the boys had been able to practice more during the early fall they might have avoided some of these difficulties due to a lack of conditioning. The fact that they were able to place fourth in the State meet despite their handicaps is something that they can be proud of. The rest of the season's record included wins over Ashland, Caribou, and a victory in the County meet, plus a second place in a three-way meet held at Maine, and a fifth place in the Eastern Maine Intersectional Meet. Eight men received their letters and all will be available for service next year. The roster includes the following men: Dick Langley, Dana Shaw, Elwood Hewes, Keith Street, Bob Tardy, Merrill Ford, Rodney Coffin, Captain Neil Buck, and Manager Larry Parker. Car michael, Coach Thompson. fBa.sebalI Last years baseball season was only moderately surceslul. In a large part this could be traced to an inability to hit at crux ial moments and too many errors in the field. I-Iowever, the XVildt-ats have nine men returning this year and with the great progress that some ol the boys made last year our team should have a banner SCHSOII. The boys on the baseball team always do their best but sometimes their spirit would be helped if more Ians showed up for the games. Let's all go out to the ball park this year and show the boys that whether it is basketball or baseball the whole school is in back ol them.
