BIG HEARTED HERBERT The humorous drama Big Hearted Herbert was presented by the mem- bers of the Presque Isle High School Faculty on December 11, 1939, in the new high school auditorium. A special performance was enjoyed during the afternoon of December 11 by various high school and grammar school students. The general performance was at night. Because of its great success and wide appeal, a second presentation was requested and was given on the night of Jan- uary 15, 1940. Miss Fillmore is our supervisor. A small gold pin and a certificate certify each one's membership. Though the club has nct yet been very active, we are sure that this League which seems to stimulate so much more interest in Latin will attain top-most success in future years. L n , , , L ' The chapter has the largest number of State Farmers and American Farm- ers of any chapter in Maine Our chapter has won the recognition of being the out tandmg chapter in the state for the mnth consecutive year It also received honoralble mention in the Natronal Chapter Contest in 1936 and again rn 1939 and first place for New England in 1939 A team representing the chapter won second place in the State Sweepstakes Judging Contest held at the University of Maine last June The team competed in cattle potato and poultry Judging rafter cuttrng and rope splicing along with 42 other chapter teams rn Maine The team also won second place in the district contest at Carrbou and first place in cattle Judging at the Northern Maine Fair competing with 15 other chapters in Aroostook County and Northern Penobscot A large number of contests and exhibits have been won by the members of this group during the past year The State News Letter and Scrapbook contests were won by our chapter reporter which brought net returns amounting t S1500 In winning these two contests he automatically won the State Reporters ontest The prize for this was a large F F A Plaque Perhaps the greatest activity during the year was the annual Father and Son Banquet which vsas held in the new gymnastum on Novem er 21 Approximately 240 members dads and guests were rn attendance Lawrence James President served as toastmaster Ralph Walker spoke on behalf of the chapter presenting the address of welcome Mr F A Smith gave the response Other speakers on the program were Ray D Hews H E Cambridge and Harry Sutter Edward Hews a greenhand member delivered the Future Farmer Creed Bryce J rdan H W Kitchen and H E Bryant presented trophies plaques ribbons and other awards to the boys Alton Perry was announced the wmner of the annual potato exhibit Three fathers James Perry Cyrus James and Earl Osgood were elect ed and received honorary membership in the chapter The chapter chick hatching orgamzation operated agarn this past year pro ducing a total f 18 0:6 baby chicks with a net profit of S597 69 We are now in full operation for the present season Approximately 7000 have been sold in advance v.rth plans underway to produce and sell at least 14 000 during this pre sent season Over 3000 chicks have been delivered thus far this season The officers in charge of this activity are as follows General manager Dana Irving Chief delivery clerk Philip Hayden Chief egg tester Harold Farley The Presque Isle Future Farmers Seed Association has lust recently finish ed loading and shipping two carloads of 834 hundred pound sacks of certified seed potatoes to Future Farmer Chapters in West Virginia These potatoes netted the members apprcximately S2 80 per barrel a price which is considerably better than the market Officers of this cooperative association are President Clayton Sprague Secretary and Treasurer Alex McPrerson The chapter Thrift Bank IS another very important and successful actrvrly There are at present 62 members with savings accounts and a total deposit of S1 453 74 Albert Brewer Jr is President of this Bank and Robert Smith is the cashier The chapter F F A rad1o programs have been br adcast over station W A G M during the past year These presentations have been in charge of a com m ttee composed of three members namely Alton Perry, Lester Junkms and Merrill Allen Many of the members have taken an active part . . . This club has gradually become popular throughout the nation with high school boys, until at present we have 6,750 Hi-Y Clubs registered in the United States. The purpose of our clubs is to create and extend thrcughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. The platform upon which we .base our club is clean living, clean speech, clean athletics, and clean scholarshipg these things we believe are essential for good character.
