We, the Publication Class, dedicate this 1969 HORNET to the memory of Pfc. Gerald Wayne Springer, our former schoolmate who was felled by a sniper’s bullet in Vietnam, August 29, 1968. It was, indeed, a great sorrow to us all ... it doesn’t always happen somewhere else - sometimes, it happens here! It is with deep regret but with deeper pride that we honor Gerald, for he chose to serve his country, volunteering for the draft on December 6. 1967 and was sent to Vietnam in May 1968. Gerald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Springer, was born April 27, 1948 near Prescott and attended our schools all 12 years. He graduated in 1966, receiving the ’’All Around Boy” Award. Other activi- ties to his credit were track, basketball, class plays and the Hi-Crier Staff - thus, leaving a fine ex- ample for his sisters and brothers ... Charlene, Steve, Rodney, Randy, and small Nancy. He was a popular boy in this town and had already made a place for himself in the community, as well as, in all our hearts. Perhaps, an excerpt from the letter of his Commanding Officer can best say it for us ... “Gerald was a very religious young man and read his Bible often. He was extremely well liked by his fellow soldiers, alert, brave, gave 1007» effort at all times and contributed immeasureably to the high state of morals within the platoon. Some men are born, live many years, and die without ever contributing to their fellow man. In my opinion, these men never really lived. Despite his youth, Gerald made the greatest contribution of all; not only did he sacrifice his life for the freedom of our nation, but was safety and inspiration to the other members of his unit. For that reason none of the men of this brigade will ever forget Gerald Springer - let us pray that the people of our nation do not forget him either. Gerald had been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the National Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and Service Medal and the Expert Badge with Rifle Bar. The Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal was awarded posthumously. We thank you, Gerald Springer - and may God Bless all the others who have and will live or die for our country. Signed ... 4 tk 1969 Uowat Qboty
