Text from Pages 1 - 180 of the 1962 volume:

Looking back, couldn’t you describe this whole college experience as one of “growth’’? That is to say, a time of “building”? Where? Why do you have to Know where? You want to see it... Let’s try to do it this way: ... What was the very first thing you noticed when you came here? All right, what was the second thing you noticed, and this time stick to the school. You saw the trees and the grass... that’s very interesting. Now, when you weren’t studying the grass, didn’t you sense an awakening going on inside of you—that maybe you felt a little like a newly planted seed? You're sure that you didn’t feel like a seed. Not even a little bit. Okay. Suppose we concentrate on your college experience. Could you say that you were aware of a vitality in the air? Besides what came out of the candy factory. Well, perhaps the air is not the best place to begin. Look, you should be able to recall some moment of new inspiration, some unforgettable mental picture... You see! You thought of something. The gym; somebody is taking money from you in the gym. Yes, it was the Bursar. Wel-l, that was at registration, don’t you remember? REGISTRATION—what you had to go through to get into class. What difference does it make why it was in the gym? The Registrar says it’s in the gym, it’s in the gym. Somebody has to make the decisions. No, the Registrar doesn’t make them all. Because there are too many other people around who would like to. The discussion is on “growth and development”. Of course it’s not listed in the curriculum! This growth and development is of the individual. The individual what? Don’t you feel that you and your col- leagues have progressed somehow since the time you entered college? Certainly you have. Now that you think about it, can you be specific? You know, you’re yawning. What’s the matter? Isn’t your school work interesting to talk about? Between your field and your professors, school should be very exciting. You find that you’re not as excitable as you used to be. Well, perhaps that is some kind of progress. Really, you look terribly beat. That’s also part of your development? Now you can go for four days without sleep! Why would you have to do that? Don’t they give you a few weeks to present a design? What hap- pens to all that time? Uh huh. Yes. There are always some things that come easier than others. That _ is to say, they change and develop _ whether they are in a school or not. School should change them more, of ‘course, unless a person is just taking time out. Therefore it is the process of going to college that has the most impact on a student. The curriculum is there to inform, but it is the task of surviving .the curriculum that educates. This is not to argue that you would have done as well no t bothering with college at all. You might have, butthe chances are against it, and anyway, sooner or r would wish you could have. called yourself an alumnus. It isn’t necessary to defend the college _ structure, and it’s too early to criticize it. All we know is that it must have been a good structure, else we could not be talking the way we are.
