A CELEBRATION. ,. xv 7o hundred year's OF A NATION I he idea of the original thirteen colonies and their leaders was born out of a passion to be free—to chart their own destiny of building a country out of this thin fabric called Freedom. The break from England was not to come easily, as this fledgling was viewed as a ser- ious threat to the tentacles of the vast and far-flung British Empire. atriots rose from every corner of the struggling country. Help came from other European countries to add to the flame of breaking the grip of England. Farmers, fish- ermen, cobblers and men from every walk of life took up their arms to defend this new- felt right to be free. As the smoke began to clear, ideas on organizing this diversity of colonies into a coalition of united states began to take shape. The form of a Constitu- tion and Bill of Rights was molded by states- men who previously were nonexistent. mm '•iff , si I s the word spread in other parts of the world of this new country, with its vast do- main and resources, thousands of immigrants poured in to start a new life. With the added growth of population, new frontiers were needed. This stretching brought new con- flicts with foreign powers who previously had laid claim to parts of the interior. il s the gangling country continued to grow, internal disagreement erupted into a battle of economic and philosophical differ- ences. The battle was to leave scars which would heal only after generations had passed. Out of the wounds came a stronger fiber of freedom for the individual man. The country had survived as a unit and now its energies would be put to work in rebuilding the found- ing fathers' ideals. r_l_ he need for new frontiers continued as movement spread West. A rapid explosion of technological advances pointed the country into the fore as an industrialized nation. Hl s one of the leading industrial nations, this strapping, growing giant became em- broiled in the first of the World Wars. After its success with other Allied Nations, a never- before-felt boom and prosperity was followed with the shattering bust of the Great De- pression. idlflmw™ New leaders were sought to pull the Country out of its fall, while on the horizon new storm clouds were building across the oceans. ..., -__ 1 “Tv z Aiit A XX second World War was fought to pro- - tect the cause of freedom, as the now grown giant emerged to take its place as the leader of the Free World. This new role has brought with it—many challenges—many successes— THE SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS WE DEDICATE OUR ANNUAL TO MR. HARMS The Senior Class is proud to dedi- cate this edition of Pauquette to you, Mr. Daniel Harms. P.H.S. has benefited greatly from your time and patience as a teacher and the many hours spent directing plays. Your talent as Master of Cere- monies, announcer at sport events, and sense of humor will long be remem- bered and appreciated. The class of 1976 extends many thanks for your contributions to the success and happiness of our high school years. 3 : .MR ;.:. r A WORLD OF INDIVIDUALISM A WORLD OF INVOLVEMENT A WORLD OF ACCOMPLISHMENT A WORLD OF CONCERN A WORLD OF PRIDE TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION SENIORS....... The challenges that face this nation today are as demand- ing of our people as the Revolutionary War period was for Americans of that era. I hope that the Class of ’76 accepts the challenges of today in the same spirit that was shown by their an- Mr. Noble To The Seniors: This Bicentennial year-1976-has been a busy and ac- tive one in our nation’s history as an effort to pay tribute and commemorate past deeds, development and attainment by our nation. Hopefully, it is also a time when we should project ahead to the future to formulate plans, set goals, and show concern for the route ahead. Shouldn’t similar personal concerns and thoughts apply to the class of 1976? Certainly, graduation is a cele- brative point in your life during which the past is reviewed and the future considered. Without this kind of thought, the chances of developing full potential is greatly hampered. Best of luck to the graduates of 1976 toward the attainment of a successful future. May your effort carry you to a point of achievement whereby twenty or thirty years from now you can be proud of personal progress and development. In conclusion, I would like to pay special tribute to those students who provided the necessary time and effort toward the development of the 1976 Pauquette. I am sure this production will result in countless hours of appreciation for all students and faculty of Poynette High School. BOARD SHOWS INTEREST This year the School Board contin- ued many of the programs instituted in past years Modular Scheduling, Open Campus, and the new Vocational Clus- ter Program are just a few. This year they have set up a committee to devel- op long-range building need priorities for the district. The board has shown interest in the student ideas through the student rep- resentative on the board. Each year the communication between students and the board has increased. We hope this trend continues in the future. The Juniors represented a wide range of interests, with many joining the various clubs, as well as almost fifty participating in some phase of music. Representing our class on the Home- coming Court were Rad Caldwell and Carrie Luessman. Aided by Mr. Nichol- son our class adviser, our Float Com- mittee constructed a fine float entitled “We’ll Trap A Victory.” Out of the clear blue sky a brilliant idea came to light. Mr. Hamshire’s homeroom No. 211, surprised no one as it bolted down the $3 first prize in the Homecoming window decoration competition. The winning theme: ‘Thou Shalt Defeat Verona!” The Junior Class of this year has every right to look back with pride on its first three years in high school, and to anticipate a fine senior year at P.H.S. Our Homecoming representatives, Larry Kaschinske and Suzi Wade did a fine job. Our Class was extremely active in all types of PHS activities, and sports. This was the finest record a Poynette football team has had since 1969. The team was led by All-Conference running back Dan Tomlinson, who fin- ished the season with 1012 yards. He, also, won the conference scoring battle, with 108 points and 21 touchdowns overall. Also making All Conference were Chris Grinde—linebacker, Scott Panetti—tackle (offensive and defensive), and Roger Stoltenberg-end. Those making All Conference second team were: Roger Stolten- berg—defensive end and Dan Tomlinson—defensive halfback. Those who received honorable mention were: Jody Halverson-linebacker, Jim Kutzke-guard, Greg Smith quarterback, Kim Sopha—defensive guard, and Tom Webster—center. The season started off as expected, with the Indians trouncing Johnson Creek, 48-13 in a non-conference game. The next two games were lost, however, to DeForest and Waunakee, the latter team taking first place in the conference. The team, anchored by the seniors on the squad, pulled together and won the remain- ing five games. They had challenging games and bad breaks, especially early in the season, losing to Deforest and Lodi by close scores. The Indians kept spirit and determination even in the face of tough competition. The nucleus of the attack was by the five returning letter-winners: Randy McNicol, Greg Smith, Dan Tomlinson, Roger Stoltenberg, and Chris Grinde. The team worked hard and put forth many hard weeks of practice. Even with the excellent coaching of Mr. Carelli and the potential of the team, they just couldn’t seem to put it all together. At the Markesan Tournament, the team placed fourth out of eight teams with 1 first, 3 seconds, 4 thirds, and 2 fourths. Then at the Marshall Tourney 2 seniors were injured for the season. The team placed fourth overall with 3 seconds, 1 third, and 5 fourths. In our dual matches, we did better than during the previous years by winning 5 and losing 7. At Conference we finished last but had one person placing who was Jody Hal- vorsen at 155 lbs., receiving third place. With guidance from the returning lettermcn, Todd Case, Jim Crawford, Randy White, and Mike Walters, the loss of several strong performers last year was not noticed so prominently. The team is still very young and relatively inexperienced, but the future looks very bright for the team. BACK ROW: ADVISER: Mr. Dann, M. Ohncsorge, G. Steinhauer. D. Peterson.T. Schoeneberg.T. This was a considerable number compared to previous years. Although the team consisted of only two seniors and the rest being underclassmen, it had a pretty good season. After several practices in the gym, it finally became dry enough for the boys to go outside and really practice their swing. With all the experience gained by the younger members under the guidance of Mr. Dann, next year’s team should prove to be even stronger. VARSITY: B. MacLeish, T. Dushek, Coach Megow, S. Hebei, T. The Varsity completed its league sched- ule with a 5-1 record and defeated Portage in the play-off for the championship. Poy- nette also finished as runner-up in the First Event at the Wausau Bonspiel. Sectionals and State Playdowns loomed ahead as the Varsity set and accomplished its goals one at a time. For the second year, Lodi, Pardeeville, Portage, and Poynette girl curlers competed in a lettered sport with a conference of their own. Graduating five mem- bers from last year’s Varsity and J.V. teams, many positions needed to be filled by the incoming girl curlers. An inter-club was formed and practiced 4 times a week, curling both 7 a.m., the early shift, or at 4 p.m. the late shift. From the inter-club the Varsity and J.V. teams were selected. The Varsity had a record of 4-2, losing both games to Portage, taking second place. The J.V.’s finished in second place in their competition also. Going to Wausau for the Invitational Bonspiel proved to be a “truly great” experience, with Varsity girls bringing home the 1st place trophy for the 1st event. The show was comprised of songs from the sixties and there was a variety of music among the numbers. The girls all had a good time while improving their swimming skills. Our new coach, Mr. Garske and assistant coach, Miss Mercer generated a great deal of enthusiasm for the sport of Girls’ Track, which accounted for the large number of girls on the team. The skill and knowledge obtained cannot be measured by the win-loss column. The girls gained a lot of valuable skill and experience. This year the Junior Varsity came back with many good Sophomore members. They also added a fine group of Freshmen players. Although this was the first year for the Freshmen, they showed great promise for the future. The Varsity started out with a whole new line-up this year. All but one of last year’s team graduated. The victorious winners of this ex- citing, spine-tingling event were none other than our illustrious Male Faculty. This team consisted of: Mr. Megow, Mr. Hanick, Mr. Schmidt, and Mr. Garske. Following the “Challenging Chicken Chase Contest”, the cheerleaders led the Pep Rally in the elementary gym, which started off with a “bang” when Mr. Thurs- ton received a pie in the face. Afterwards the players and the Court were presented to the spectators by Mr. Thurston. A blazing bonfire continued to spark our “Indian spirit.” Thanks to the FFA and the community, our bonfire was a success. Leading the parade was our “Head Honcho”, Mr. Hanick, followed by the cheerleaders. After weeks of practice, the band fell into step. Close behind came the football players and the floats. With the great teamwork of our Varsity Squad, we had a happy ending to this day with a victory over Verona. “DON’T LET THE SUN GO DOWN ON ME” L. Kaschinske, S. Wade, B. Wilson, S. Anderson, R. The Grand March was at 10:15 with Queen, Peggy Sopha, and King, Bob Onstad leading the procession. Mountains and a brilliant sun were the background as the court walked through the snow covered peaks. “Hard Labor” played our theme. 80 81 THE SOUND This year the Poynette High School Band was greatly improved under the leadership of its new di- rector, Mr. Arthur Hintz. The Concert Band presented sev- eral concerts this year. These in- cluded annual events such as: The Pop Concert, The Christman Con- cert, and The Solo and Ensemble Contest. For The Mid-winter Con- cert, the band performed “The Sleepy Hollow Elementary School Band.” This was a new experience for the band members since it was their first try at aleatoric music. Also, there was one new addition this year-the band played an ex- change concert with Westfield High School. This year proved to be very suc- cessful for the band. The Poynette High School Chorus came back bigger than ever this year. It started the year with the Pop Con- cert, singing many contemporary songs. Solos were sang, and Mr Harms was, once again our Master of Cere- monies. . Next, there was the Christmas Concert to prepare for in a very short time. The Chorus sang many Christ- mas songs and a few selections from “The Messiah.” The program ended with the audience joining in singing “Silent Night.” After Christmas, there was the Mu- sic Festival to look forward to, which was held at Wisconsin Heights this year. The Chorus gave its last perform- ance at the graduation ceremony in June. 87 SOPHOMORE TRIPLE TRIO: BACK ROW: K. Koepke, P. Lloyd, K. Brendel, S. Wade, R. Arnold, T. Case. THIRD ROW: D. Then they began learning choreo- graphy for the songs “Spinning Wheel” and “What kind of Fool Am I?” They spent many long hours preparing for the Solo and Ensemble Contest, which was held at DeForest this year. They had the opportunity to sing at MATC for half an hour, in April. In May they sang at Portage. Many new members were added. The year was a very busy but successful one. SWING CHOIR 2: BACK ROW: K. The club started the year early by selling ads during the summer for the football programs. Many merchants from the surrounding areas bought ads which enabled them to put money into the treasury. When the 1975-76 school year started, the club changed its name from “Lettermens Club” to Varsity Club” and they also revised the constitution. One of the first projects of the year was the selling of white tube socks with orange and black stripes. They seem- ed to be in great demand at P.H.S. because all forty-eight pair were sold. A “foul indicator” was made for Waterloo by the club under the supervision of Mr. Garske, the adviser. They showed support for the Poynette Basketball team by buying an ad to go into the tournament program. VARSITY CLUB 99 We feel that it is time for Mrs. Ohnesorge to be recog- nized for all the work she does for us. Many of you may not know it, but Mrs. Ohnesorge is a necessary extra-hand to our library system. Without her it would be impossible for Mrs. Hilgendorf and Mrs. Schereck to run the libraries efficiently. Mrs. Ohnesorge processes all books, magazines, and AV materials for all the libraries of Jt. District No. 10 after the materials have been catalogued by Mrs. Hilgendorf and Mrs. Schereck. She is always there when people are in need —at the circulation desk, searching for the right magazine, a book needed for a report, or any other material that a student or teacher needs. But most important, she always has a kind word for a teacher or student. SIGHT 7V SOUND Have you ever seen a teacher frantically trying to get a machine to work as the time slowly dwindles away? Then the teacher gives up and calls, “HELP”! Hopefully one of the five trained students in Audoi-Visual equipment can come to the rescue. Limited time and other class responsibilities causes teachers to have frustrating moments with the machines. This is now eliminated because the students know exactly how to operate the ma- chines. They not only save time for the teacher but gain valuable learning experience in the area of AV materials. Teachers are now able to show AV media without any problems, thanks to these students. THE BOOK-EES The Student-Librarians’ program gives interest- ed students an opportunity to serve the school, to expand their knowledge, to use their special talents, and to work with others. It helps students to gain poise, courtesy, and a sense of responsibility. Some standards for qualification are: a love of books, punctuality, common sense, neatness, cleanliness, and a willingness to serve others. Mrs. Hilgendorf, as well as helping students find materials, shows the student librarians how to work around the library. The Poynette High School library would never run as efficiently with- out our faithful librarian. BACK ROW: A. Dorn, T. Case, F. Schmidt, A. Qualle, D. Tompkins. SECOND ROW: K.Koepke, A. HELPING IS OUR BUSINESS Students in Action for Education is an organization to help students discover new career opportunities and to aid other students. This year the members of S.A.E. were involved in parent-teacher conferences, careernights and, also, set up a collection of Campbell’s Soup Labels to purchase audio- visual equipment for the grade schools. We hope that Dekor- ra, Arlington, and Poynette grade schools will all benefit from this project. LEFT TO RIGHT: A. Qualle, L. Ashmore, P. Hill, R. Price, L. Hoch. The members of Photo Club spent a lot of time taking pictures of various school events for use by the Annual Staff and area newspapers. Members learned a lot about the art of photography from behind the camera and in the darkroom, under the direction of the club adviser. Mr. Dann. The Photo Club has a good variety of fine camera and darkroom equipment which can really benefit a stu- dent in learning a valuable skill and have lots of fun do- ing it. We have given hours on end to try and out do all previous annuals. The annual now completed for another year leaves a lot of relief for many. There were long hard hours ahead in August but now they are all behind. This may be the last annual for the class of ’76, but it will never be the final one of Poynette High School. As long as there are people who care, there will always be an an- nual. ' 107 OUR SCHOOL GOVERNMENT BACK ROW: President T. Case, B. Onstad, R. Megow, D. Seaman, B. Gorman, T. Breneman. SECOND ROW: R. Then in the 1975-76 school year, 1st and 2nd semester representatives were elected from the four homerooms of every class. These nineteen members plus their adviser, Mrs. Calkins made up the Student Council. This organization represented the student body and saw to it that its ideas were brought to the attention of the Board and Administration. Student Council has made sure that every year the Homecoming activities run smoothly. It maintains the pop machines in the commons, runs a con- cession stand at the basketball games, and gives scholarships to graduating seniors. It tries to make PHS the best it can possibly be. Over the past year our activities ranged from the formal FFA Banquet to the informal FFA Banquet and the very informal Challenging Chicken Chase Contest. There were times of rough water, and times of calm seas but our proud FFA’ers stuck together. Let it not be said that we never had fun, for the joy of this year will last forever. In the spring when the crops were planted our organization started anew. Election of officers was first on the agenda. Summer rolled around bringing warmth to the earth, signaling the fair. With spirits high our Chapter invaded the Columbia County fair grounds. The excitement was halted with an occasional water fight, or run around the grounds. Prizes had been awarded from Champions to last place. The turning of the leaves meant back to school and work. Livestock judging took up most of the time. Homecoming came next with our Chapter building the biggest bonfire ever. We, also, started a new tradition-the “Challenging Chicken Chase.” At six o’clock the chickens were released, filling the crowd with joy and amusement. The float for the parade was fun to work on but hard work, too. Vol- unteers stayed until 12:30 only to see the masterpiece fall apart in the parade. Fun- ny as it may sound, our sow just got tired of standing around. The parade was saved by an FFA member, as she led the pig down the street. Snow signaled Fruit Sales. Hopes were high to pass our 590 total cases of last year. With enthusiasm high, our goal was almost doubled. Prizes were given as our sales were completed. As the year ended we summed up our achievements, looked back, and laughed. no Duroc Judging Team THE FINISH Dairy Judging Team START The A-Maze-Ing FFA li=n_ Junior Livestock Judging Team Bon Fire Tractor Operators 111 RECIPE FOR: FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA By: Mrs. Webster 22 members evenly blended 1 leader, diced to perfection A pinch of hope A barrel of work Salt and pepper to season. At the beginning of the year, AFS club had a hay- ride to welcome Stella to Poynette. It turned out to be a great success, for the night was beautiful and every- one had a good time. A bike hike and picnic had, also, been planned but because of rain it had to be cancelled. It was rescheduled in the spring. The annual AFS candy sale started in March and went through April. Part of this money was contribu- ted to help send a Poynette High School student to an- other country in the summer of 1977. Money obtained from the candy machine in the commons was still used to bring a foreign exchange student to Poynette. The club was busy this year and everything ran smoothly under the guidance of its adviser, Mrs. Pres- cott. Mr. Bender, Kari Bender, Mrs. Bender, Stella Andersen, Bill Bender. FRIENDS OF THOSE FROM AFAR 115 SPECIAL DELIVERY FROM DENMARK mm Dear PHS’ers, I wish to thank everybody who made my stay here so very special and, of course, everybody who in the first place made it possible for me to come. It has been a great experience for me to come over to the United States of America. I am very happy here, and I am glad that I came to such a nice, friendly place as Poynette. It is hard to find some words that express my feelings. It is just that I have been enjoying my life here very much. It has been great to learn about your community, your way of living, and your country. I hope I gave you a little idea about life in Denmark. My home here is in Arlington. I am living with the Benders. I feel like a member of the family and I am happy here. My sister is Kari Bender. This Christmas vacation she took me skiing. It was the first time I have ever been on skis and she had a lot of problems trying to make me stand on my skis instead of lying on the snow. 1 like to though, so I became a member of the Ski Club and went skiing (lying in the snow). In Denmark I live on Fyn, the second biggest island in Denmark. There are about five hundred islands in Denmark, but only a hundred of them are inhabited. I live in the country just by the shore. In the summer I can be found in the water or ly- ing in the sun, if I don’t have to work or do dishes. Here I am out for synchronized swimming, which I enjoy. The climate in Denmark is very similar to the climate in Wisconsin. We usually don’t get temperatures under zero, but we have ice and snow in the winter. I only have one sister, Kirsten, she is thirteen years old, and we used to have fun together. She and I went horseback rid- ing together. I have my own horse at home, his name is Pimpernel. My sister has a donkey, but we share the horse. Jokum (the donkey) only does what he wants to do, and usually he does not feel like working. Here I also had the chance to go riding to- gether with Kari. It was fun, but different; at home I ride English, here it was with one hand and Western. My father is a carpenter and he has his workshop at home. I liked to go fishing with him. My mother is a kindergarten teacher and works in Assens, a town about nine miles from Logismoseskov (that is where 1 live). My mother and 1 like to go shopping, a thing I also have been enjoying here. Last year I graduated from school at home. Our school system is different from yours. We start in school when we are seven years old and after ten years we graduate. By us a class is about twenty-two persons, the class has its own classroom, and it is the teachers who move around, not the pupils. It was a little strange for me here in the beginning to move around alter each class. I like it though, in that way you meet a lot of different people. It was also nice to be able to choose the subjects you wanted. At home I had to have a lot of subjects and I could not choose. Last year I had to have German, English, Danish, math, science, history, geography, biology, and physical exercises; I had French as an extra subject. The games, (football and basketball) have been a lot of fun going to and cheering with the cheerleaders and everybody else is great. In Denmark the school does not arrange activities like football (soccer) and basketball. If you want to play these things you have to join a club. Half of my stay in Poynette is already over now; I do not know where the time has gone; it seems it is just running. In July I have to go home; I do not really want to think about it now. It is strange to think about; I mean, that you have to leave and you do not know when you can come back again. But, I am glad I had the chance to come, and I want to say thank you to all of you. The theme was, “We’ll lay an ‘A-patch’-ee on their tribe.” During the year bake sales and a variety of activities were sponsored. The main event of the year for many was the trip to Mexico. A group of students, some of whom were not Spanish Club members, Miss Mercer and other adult chaperones left on April 15 for a fun-filled bus ride to Mexico. Once in Mexico the fun began. Tours and excitement filled each of the ten days. This was a trip that will long be remembered by the many students and adults who participated. 118 Waugh, B. Ohnesorge, S. Anderson, L. In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence: the bliss of growth; the glory of action; the splendour of beauty; for yesterday is already a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision; but today, well lived, makes yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day!
