The band participated with dignity in the Pottsville Christmas and Memorial Day parades, the Pottsville and Saint Clair Halloween parades, the Schuylkill County Band Festival at Ashland, and was awarded a first place trophy at both the Schuylkill County Firemen's Convention parade at Cressona and the Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival. ' The band's field routines were built around solid arrangements of music by the band's two handsome directors, Mr. Arthur Delpaz and Mr. Rollin Miller. One of the most popular football shows demonstrated the various uses of rhythm in music. Another show saluted the music of Broadway. Added to the band front this year were eight red and white drill ilags, which augmented the band's general effect on the march. President ....... Vice-President ..,. Secretary ..... Treasurer. . MR. The nine returning senior lettermen formed a strong nucleus for the team. The Tide responded with an 8-3 rec-, ord. With a few breaks and a little luck, the slate might have been 11-0. However, all of us at P. A. H. S. were very proud of our Football Team. - POTTSVILLE 13 - BLUE MOUNTAIN 6 . ' g Pottsville opened its 1970 football season with a hard-fought 13-6 victory over a rugged Blue Moun- tain eleven. Paul Shellhammer and Vince Lopez scored the Tide's two six-pointers with Kim Uranko converting the P. A. T. Co-captain Joe Mazzuca and Leo Ostrosky played excellent' defensive games, while Lopez rushed for over 100 yards. Ostrosky pilfered two passes to pace the secondary. ' POTTSVILLE 19 - MAHANOY AREA 0 M , Pottsville, alive and kicking after its initial victory over Blue Mountain, stunned Mahanoy Area. This contest was for supremacy in Schuylkill County. Paul Shellhammer netted two TD's and picked up 122 yards passing. Vince Lopez sparked the offense with a score and Chuck Bobinis, Tom McGeoy, and Rick Fessler starred on defense. POTTSVILLE 43 - TAMAQUA 0 P. A. H. S. zipped Tamaqua 43 to 0 to register its second straight shutout. It was a night of long scor- ing runs. Ron Lombel and Dave Sydnorscored on 'punt returns of 70 and 61 yards. Junior Speedster, Ed Guers raced 70 yards for another TD. Bob Gronski scored twice on 13 and 11-yard pass plays. Lopez ended the TD parade with a one-yard plunge. Uranko kicked two placements and Lopez and Tra- bosh each ran for 2-point conversions. POTTSVILLE 28 - PANTHER VALLEY 14 Pottsville made it four in a row with a bruising 28-14 victory over Panther Valley. Offensively the Crimson Tide was paced by Shellhamer-2 TD's, 2-point conversions, and 66 yards rushing,-- and Lo- pez-1 TD, and option pass for 66 yards to Ron Lombel, and 93 yards rushing. Fessler, Mazzuca, Syd- nor, and McGeoy paced the Tide's rock-ribbed defense. A N 'POTTSVILLE 49 - SHAMOKIN 6 ' This game could be classified as the route of the year. Experts picked this to be a close battle, but the Tide put it all together for the mauling. Ron Lombel played an exceptional game olfensively, but this could also be said of everyone. Pottsville's scoring-Lombel's 24-yard pass, Lopez's 19-yard run, LaSe1va's 11-yard run, Guers' 25-yard run, Gronski's 3-yard pass, Fess1er's 1-yard run, and Jack Snyder rounded out the scoring with a fumble recovery in the end -zone. ' POTTSVILLE 12 - MOUNT CARMEL 28 P. A. H. S. stumied Mount Carmel with two quick scores on runs by Vince Lopez and Vince LaSelva. However, Mount Carmel snapped back for three quick scores and came out on top. Ron Lombel, Bob Gronski, and Dave Sydnor teamed up with Paul Shellhammer for sizeable passing gains. Mistakes deii- nitely hurt the Tide in this game. POTTSVILLE 0 - SI-IIKELLAMY 7 Despite the bitter loss, Pottsville's defense played, perhaps, their best game of the year against rugged Shikellamy. Pottsvi1le's heralded defense stubbornly gave up yardage and on several occasions held Shikellamy near the goal line. Ed Guers and Leo Ostrosky played a fine game, but the absence of Lom- bel and Lopez, because of injuries, hurt the Tide's offense. Chuck Bobinis, Rick Fessler, and Joe Maz- zuca starred for the defense, while Dave Sinbad Sydnor's pass catching shone for the offense. POTTSVILLE 34 - HAZLETON 12 Pottsville snapped a two-game losing streak by crushing Hazleton 34-12. Ed Guers galloped for three TD's and a two-point conversion. Junior halfback, Vince LaSelva, topped the century mark in rushing. Bob Gronski and Rick Thornburg snagged two passes. On defense, the shining crusaders were Chollie Shields and Junior, Glen Gaffney. POTTSVILLE 12 - WILLIAM ALLEN 26 Pottsville suffered its third setback of the season in dropping a disappointing verdict to Allen 26-12, although the Tide outgained Allen statistically 3 to 1. The game was played in a sea of mud. The old nemesis, the fumble, hurt the Tide this night. Shellhammer scored twice while Lopez rushed for over 100 yards. Defensively, the standouts were Harold Smith, Tom McGeoy, Dave Sydnor, and Paul Shell- hammer. The loss of Jim Dittmar and Chuck Bobinis through injuries hurt the Tide. POTTSVILLE 27 - NORTH SCHUYLKILL 0 P. A. H. S. registered its third whitewash of the season by blanking the Spartans 27-0. This game marked the end for the seniors at home. Shellhammer had a fine passing game, and Harold Smith played outstandingly on defense. Ron Lombel scored on a 12-yard pass, Sydnor on a 37-yard pass, Mazzuca on a 2-yard run, Smith on a 30-yard pass interception, and Lopez converted three P. A. T.'s. Cioach Flynn substituted freely from the second quarter on to give some varsity experience to under- c assmen. Po'rTsv1LLE 26 - READING 16 V ' Pottsville stunned Reading 26-16 at Albright Stadium for the first time in Coach Flynn's tenure. Pottsville devastated Reading in the air and on the ground. Paul Shellharnmer threw T.D. passes to Vince Lopez, Dave Sydnor, and Bob Gronski. Rick Fessler, Harold Smith, and John Fernsler stood out on defense. All in all, it was a beautiful way to end a season, and P. A. H. S. owes something to the Seniors of 1971 who led the way. I f I? ! 1 if L ,. , . ps.-I-fs g xx A , P-L'x AV. Ff- rake' ROI! The team completed the iirst half with a record of'4-6, but made a speedy come- back in the second half with a record of 9-3. The J. V. team, coached by Mr. Jack Keating, had a final record of 10-12. The team won the Schuylkill County Relay Carnival, setting three Carnival rec- ords, and the Hazleton Invitational Track and Field Championship, nosing out Mount Carmel by two polnts. The team was second in the District Eleven PIAA Track and Field Championship, setting two new District Eleven records in the two-mile relay and the half-mile. Pottsville Area was second in the South- ern Conference Track and Field Championship a.nd the Mount Carmel Relays. The team also placed third in the Eastern League Track and Field Championship and was fourth in the Penn Relays. The team won nine trophies and ninety-five individual medals and ribbons. Outstanding scoring stars were: Captain James Messina, Co-captains Gary 'Comfort and Jim Ditt- mar, Ed Guers, Dave Wilson, Vincent LaSe1va, and Kurt. Jefferson. Captain Messina was fifth in the PIAA State Championship Half Mile at Penn State University and won a bronze medal. He set a new half-mile district record of one minute and fifty-nine seconds in the District Eleven Championship. He then proceeded to set a new Pottsville Area half-mile record of one minute and fifty-seven seconds in the Penn State State Championship. This replaces the 1:58 record of Pennsylvania Half-Mile state champion, Clyde Lowthert, in 1951. Messina won a full academic scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania where he was a member of their undefeated 1970 Cross Country team and also a member of their great two-mile team. Gary Comfort ran terrific quarters and half-miles and ran a one-minute fifty-seven and four-tenths second half-mile in placing eighth in the State Championship half-mile run. Ed Guers won third place in both 100-and 220-yard dashes in District Eleven PIAA Championship. Dave Wilson placed second in the 220, and ran at the Penn State State Championships. The two-mile relay team was simply phenomenal. They broke a record every time they ran with the exception of the time when they ran for the State Championship at Penn State University. They broke six records, two of them in one week. They hold the two-mile record in the Schuylkill County Relays, District Eleven PIAA, Southern Conference, Mount Carmel Relays, and the Eastern Track a.nd Field Championships. The team consisted of James Messina, Gary Comfort, Vince LaSe1va, and Kurt Jeffer- son. Junior Jim Dittmar was high scorer in the Held events, specializing in the javelin, shot put, and dis- cus. In the District Eleven Track and Field Championships he won a medal in every weight event, a new P. A. H. S. field record. The Track and Field Squad is coached by Mn Carlton Pete Sterner, head coachg Mr. Richard Laubach, Mr. Ray DiCello, and Mr. Michael Lazarchick, assistants. Standing, Left to Right-R. Longarini, T. Cas Malys was the leading scorer for the team with an average of 80. Cas was followed closely by Griif Lindsay, who had an average of 81.1. With the return of these two standouts, as well as such assets as Howie Merrick and Bill Jones, the 1971 team should have a prosperous season. PAHS Opponents 1315 ....,..,.. S. Lassies, under the capable leadership of Miss Ellen Hildreth, produced a near per- fect slate of 9-1 during the 1970-'71 campaign. Pottsville opened its season by winning three straight before bowing to a powerful Pine Grove quintet by a count of 42-26. Nevertheless, the girls rebounded from the loss and outclassed their remaining foes. Linda Rega and Donna Sandherr co-captained the Lassies to many thrilling success stories over such formidable opponents as Cardinal Brennan, North Schuylkill, and Blue Mountain. In these critical contests, the girls kept their composure and proved that they are a great team. Seniors formed the backbone of this year's club. Barb Quigg and Donna Sandherr were the main- stays of the forward spots. The backcourt duties were ably handled by Nancy Bobby, Marilyn Miller, and Beet-footed Linda Rega. Claudia Knoll, who was always an offensive-scoring threat in the post posi- tion, pumped in a team-leading total of 107 points. The 1970-'71 roster was characterized by excellent sportsmanship, adept teamwork, and balanced scor- ing. Such traits are indicative of a championship team. Although the talents and resources of this year's graduates will be missed, there are four juniors and three sophomores who are returning to take up the reins. The seniors put their confidence in them, and hope they preserve the winning tradition of Potts- ville High. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council of Pottsville Area High School estab- lished in 1926 is one of the oldest organizations in the school. The main purposes of the Council are to promote better stu- dent-faculty relations and to improve the general attitude and welfare of the student body. At the start of the school term one representative is elected from each homeroom. The otlicers all members of the senior class are elected by the entire student body in the spring pre- ceding their term of office. This year's Student Council was much more active and had even greater contact with the student body than in previous years. Both traditional and new activities were carried out by the Council. As in the past it sponsored the presentation of Lyceum programs, sold book covers and sponsored the Penny - A - Week Drive. The funds from the drive were used to buy Christmas toys for the less fortunate children of the comnnmity. A new activity was the students' assisting as ushers at the newly initi- ated parents' Back To School Night. Several members of the Council aided the Pottsville Junior Chamber of Commerce with its Christmas shopping for the underprivileged children of Pottsville. t OFFICERS President ............,...,...... AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE The American Field Service is a newly revised club whose ,. goals, in addition to sponsoring a foreign exchange student to ff , ' ' this school and a P. A. H. S. student to a foreign country, include , showing the foreign student various facets of American life he 1, ordinarily wouldn't see while away from his native country. Eight groups of students have been organized to take the ex- change student to several places of interest. The destinations of these groups include, Eckley, Pa., Washington, D. Foreign Exchange Weekend, with over 20 stu- dents coming to Pottsville from the surrounding area. The activ- ities planned for this program included a talent show, a dance, an International Dinner, swimming, basketball, and a grand tour of the D. H. H. Lengel Middle School. It was a very exciting week end. Under the capable leadership of our officers and advisor, Mr. Joseph Hartley, A. F. S. will continue to prosper as one of the many 'outstanding clubs of P. A. H. S. Our A. F. S. guest this year is the very amiable Maurice Duque-Ortiz, from the South American country of Colombia. 'T-'PT OFFICERS President, . .,............,.,. With all the struggles to make it the best play yet, the cast found themselves with seemingly unend- ing rehearsals, tensions, and many times the feeling that November 19, 1970, would never come. VVhen the night finally arrived, all the work was refiected in the great performance. The love, laughs, prob- lems, and sadness were felt by all who attended the play. The Class of 1971 would like to express their sincere appreciation to Miss Sherill Silberling and Miss Geraldine Morgan, without whose patience and guidance the play would not have been possible The Senior Class would also like to thank those who supported their endeavor to make their play outstand- ing in P.
