Vile were favored th any disguise at all-Jimmy Hoke. None of us had any room for comment, for by the time the party ended we were all pretty well disguised, as we resembled persons scrambling out of a pond with their clothes on- A delightful Hallowe'en Party having only one member attend wi we had been diving in after apples At Christmas we presented a clever program portraying a children's section in a large department store. At the close, pennies and fresh vegetables were tossed upon the stage. It might also be added that we received the prize for trimming the prettiest Christmas tree. By this time many experienced a slight difficulty in keeping abreast of the school work because of the swift way in which time seemed to speed. Needless to say, our Sophomore year came to an uneventful close with the usual final tests held during June. Our stream became wider and we finally began to float past some of the smaller tides of ignorance and soon were again launched into another school year. It was at this time that we were introduced to lVIr. Lengel, who was heartily greeted, and it has been under his inspiration and leadership that we have completed our last two and most successful years. For some rather unknown reason we failed to hold any parties during our Junior year. Several committees were formed, but their ideas never seemed to materialize. It may have been that more attention was given to study and scholastic standing. In sports we continued to rank among the first. The girls of the class formed a basketball sextette which resulted in the other classes following suit, and it was not long until many exciting games were being played. VVith the introduction of a school gym many of the members of the class were afforded an excellent opportunity to display their skill on the various pieces of apparatus. VVe were well represented on the Gym Team which won second place in the Stroudsburg lN'Ieet. As a climax to our activities we sponsored the annual junior Prom on the night of April 20. The Holly Roof was gaily bedecked with many artistic decorations under the direction of a very capable committee. Socially it was judged a great success. At the conclusion of the eventful year we looked back with both satisfaction and regret over a term full to capacity with various interesting activities and some study. Our river Was fast becoming more turbulent, and we began to discover many under- currents which We had not thought were there. VVe were being tossed rather aimlessly about, and it was ever more difficult to evade the many tides of ignorance and tempta- tion so as to continue in the proper course. We were given one more opportunity for serious thought before being flung into the great sea of life, and it was then that We paused for our last year in P. H. S. Maily have said, Dear old Seniors! If we appeared old it was from the serious outlook of our last year in this institution we have really learned to love and respect. XVith a brief resume of our past three years we formed plans to make this year our best. As a start we issued challenges along scholastic and athletic lines to the other classes, thereby endeavoring to raise their standards as well as our own and to strengthen the good fellowship among students. In 'only one branch of activities were we somewhat sluggish-and that debating. Miss Unger's and Mr. Gaskins, urgent requests for representatives from the Senior Class for the Debating Team will always ring in our ears. All were a bit awed and some fearful at our entry into a domain we had for years hoped to realize. lt is amusing to recall the various thoughts which passed through our minds in those early days of school. VVe began first of all to consider our privileges and some even came to the conclusion that classes were only to be attended if nothing of importance presented itself. But it was within a short period of time that our ideas were rather radically changed and we viewed things from a different angle. All in all, it was not long until, with a true spirit of acclimation, we fell in whole-heartedly with the school routine and shared the responsibility of supporting an Alma Mater-our Alma lllater and for some the only one. It is much less difficult to recall our many social and athletic activities of that first year than to remember the subject matter we derived from our text books. In athletics our enthusiasm knew no bounds, but socially we were very ill at ease. This was fullv proved bv a Jarty held at Dives' Hun alow chaperoned bv bliss Un er Y .- 1 . - . 3 . - g. and lvflr. Brown who did their ver ' best to make it lI'ltC1'CStlI1 and create some spirit 5 g Many games were attempted, and of cooperative friendship among those present. some of the braver individuals carried things so far as to try dancing. We can hardly classify it as a success. by sponsoring a Pirate Party for our Later on the Junior Class came to our aid benefit. As we emerged from the elevator that night and walked the plank in true pirate fashion we were just a little awed as who had lent realism to their brave attempt activity. Their efforts were not in vain! we gazed on the robbers of the seas to scare us into some kind of social our athletic standing from the start. We, the Class of '30, have been proud of Trux Williams was our first candidate for Varsity Football and has continued through four years of school to remain the pride of the class as he moved from the scrub team to the Captain of the Varsity. It required a year to become thoroughly accustomed to high school life, and with the completion of our final examinations which marked the close of our Freshman year we uttered a sigh of relief. We had eliminated one milestone which we dedicated to the past and looked forward to three more school terms of hard study and faithful striving towards worthwhile goals. The streani widened and we found ourselves returning to Patterson Building for another year's adventure. Here and there were new faces and then again we were aware of the absence of some. We were really Sophomores! How well that sounded and how happily we gazed on the poor bewildered Freshmen-in fact it was with a feeling of conscious aloofness that we viewed all our surroundings and with difhculty that we submitted ourselves to class room instruction. Strangely enough, those individuals known as Faculty did not consider us in the same light and we were promptly presented with textbooks and a complete schedule of assignments. Our active part in class football placed us among the leaders with second highest honors. We were especially proud of the girls who displayed their spirit by organizing a Hockey Team and who closed their season without a defeat. M44 aHhI7l?7, M,W-Z3Q,,7,,,,,,,,j' In the music field we were ably represented by the efforts of of Paul Schlintz in the T group which sang in the National High School Chorus in Chicago. Our social activities for the year were started off with a bang when we held a very novel Collegiate Hop in the Gym. With the varied colored streamers hung from the lights and the walls gayly decorated with modernistic designs the place was hardly recognized, and it was clothed in such an atmosphere of modern charm that from the time the orchestra began playing until the dance came to an end it was a round of continuous gayety. Everyone left pleased with the attempt. Another unusual undertaking of the class was the sponsoring of monthly dances with the members of the other classes as the invited guests of the evening. At the first hop we invited our sister class, the Sophomore, followed by Junior and Freshman. VVe hope the Seniors of the future will follow our lead. As the time sped on, it was not long until the halls again echoed with the strains of the charming Nlinuet, which was lightly tripped by a group chosen from the Senior Class and directed by Miss Critz. In athletics we were unusually well represented and pleased with our showing. For captain of the Football Team we had Trux Willialiis, and with the Basketball Squad it was George Serfass who was honored. Our girls came out first in Hockey, and the members of the Varsity Basketball Team are certainly to be commended. The call for track candidates was the first token of approaching spring and the reminder of the few remaining months of school. YVith our last year' in Pottsvile High drawing to a close we glance back over the four happy years and within ourselves express our earnest gratitude to our instructors and to those who made possible those four memorable years, while the boys of Mr. Gaskinsl home room will ever recall his untiring efforts to lead them into higher types of conduct. And with minds wrapped in serious thought our mighty river carries us swiftly from the protecting portals of P. H. S. into the great sea where we are all scattered in many directions with the possibility of never coming together again in that unit so well remembered as the Class of 1930. And so like beavers we had worked many days to finish that famous dam of reason and commonsense which we had vaguely hoped might stem the waxing tide of igno- rance and intolerance. Henry B.
