Each morning high school students were sent to the various elementary schools in the area. Later, the grade schools organized their own safety patrol under Mr. Earl Strange. In 1931 selected members of the high school patrol organized the first drill team. During the past school year patrols were assigned positions in the halls be- tween classes and during study halls to keep them orderly. Also, the girls ushered at school functions and the boys assisted at tire drills. l,. The two girls, drill teams were captained by Margaret Levengood and Heather Davidheiser. Captain of the boysi team was Robert Gray. Pottstown drill teams have taken prizes many times in national competition in Washington due to the fine execution and variety of drills, as well as their appearance. Under the leadership of Betsy Shaw, presidentg Barbara Kalis, vice- presidentg Kathleen McCarthy, secretaryg Joyce Lias, treasurerg and the counseling of Mrs. Mildred J. Hutt, the forty-one members endeavored to prepare themselves for their lifework. Among the activities of the year were two field trips to hospitals. One was taken in the fall of the year and the other in the spring. The girls presented an assembly to the student body on February 25 in which they depicted the life of a student nurse. A scrapbook of the activities of the year was kept. To conclude their program the girls held a picnic. The members also purchased pins bearing the Florence Nightingale lamp, symbol of nursing. A. A. The job of the sophomore repre- sentatives was mainly to sell the P. ll. S. novelties in the A. A. Store. It was also the responsibility of the lfoard to take charge of all athletic asstmblies throughout the year. To stimulate an interest in aviation, Mr. Hamilton or- ganized the Aeronautics Club this year. Films distributed by the local Civil Air Patrol and the Air Scouts of Potts- town's airport were shown to the members. Discussions were held concerning the films and other phases of aviation. Each member of the club took advantage of the oppor- tunity of taking a fifteen- minute airplane ride over Pottstown and the surround- ing area. The Bookologists, met dur- ing the fourth week activity period. Their officers were: Joan Moses, president: Janice Begel. vice-president: and Doris Reitenbaugh, secretary. These two groups, under the leadership of Miss Eleanor Cornmesser, worked to pro- mote interest in books and other reading material. The club provided valuable experience for those expecting to be members of library staffs in the future. Steady drill in locating books in the library aided the girls and boys in finding books for the rest of the students. Several volunteered for library work before school, during study halls. and after school. Work behind the desk included stamping books for others to take out. receiving those books returned, and replacing books on the shelves. In addition, they were constantly searching for interesting new books. Besides carrying on correspondence with surrounding schools, the groups made a trip to the local newspaper office and to Kutztown State Teachers College. Q tAI'0M,g UOALITLQJ 0 l'l0LUA6JgQ . In one respect these four might sum up the 1954 football season: but in another. they would be inadequate to describe this team which defeated all its traditional rivals, set a new seasonal scoring mark, and ended with a record of eight wins and two defeats. From the opening kickoff of the season, everyone knew that this year Potts- town had developed one of the best all-around combinations it ever had. There were fleet backs. a stonewall line, and a magniticent defense. And they played up to all ex- pectations with only a two-game lapse of successive defeats to West Chester and Berwyn. The team compiled a total of 246 points to surpass the school record. Howard Bedell broke the school's individual scoring mark with a record-shattering 126 points. To add to their laurels. All Fhes-Mont League Choices included Howard Bedell and two ofthe co-captains. Earl Hunsicker and Merrill Shirey on the first team, while Clark Burns gained second-team honors. The jayvees compiled a record of four wins and five defeats. They were coach- ed by Mr. Grigg and Mr. Stofko. Eighty OPENING GAMES SIDELINE EXFITEMENT. Under the mentorship of a new coach, Mr. Charles Brown, the varsity basketball team made Pottstown High basketball his- tory as they gained the Ches-Mont League championship and thus set a new record of going undefeated through an entire season of 12 league games. Advancing as far as the District 1 semi-final round playoffs of the PIAA Class A championship, they de- feated Upper Perkiomen, 90-56, and then bowed to Lansdowne, 70-60. The season followed the pattern outlined by their genial coach, concentrating mainly on defense. The Trojan quintet exhibited several tight zone setups, a constricting man- for-man press. and a lethal scoring attack. Although several combinations of players were used in Coach Brown's quest for the most successful quintet. the Trojans' first fire normally consisted of two seniors, Merrill Shirey and Robert Gray: two juniors, Paul Zirkel and John Barber: and one sophomore. Alfred Laws. After the league season closed, all-league choices were announced. The Trojans were well represented on the first team by co-cap- tain Merrill Shirey and Paul Zirkel, while Alfred Laws and co-captain Robert Gray gained second-team honors. With a well-rounded team that had an offense and defense of equal efficiency. the ,iunior Trojans tied Coatesville for seclnd-place honors in the Ches-Mont League competition. winning thirteen of their two dozen games. As the eleyen sophomores shared the scoring honors. Coach Shantz did not find it necessary to depend upon one or two players for the jayyees' success. Leading the little Trojans in points scored with Hunter Matthews. followed closely by Robert Freese. Allan Eyans, Frank Waresak. and Linn Kressley. Probably the most formidable opponents encountered by the quick-moving jun- ior yarsity in the Fhes-Mont League were West Chester, which claimed the cham- pionship at the end of the season. and C'oatesyille. which the Pottstown J. Y.'s tied for second place. After a rather moderate start, the nimble-footed ,iayvees pressed onward in their campaign. ln spite of their eleyen losses the baby Trojans played excellent basketball. considering the fact that this was their first year together. They emerged at the end of the season as promising material for the Trojan varsity squads of 1956 and 1957. J. Y. To describe Pottstown High's 1954 baseball team is to describe a team that surpassed every known high school record in the nation's history. Over a period of four years they, along with their three predecessors, were victorious in 48 consecutive games. For their ef- forts, all members of these teams who could possibly make the trip were flown to Cooperstown, New York, where a plaque was dedicated in the Baseball Hall of Fame in honor of the great achievement of these four squads. The 1954 squad, under Coach Grigg and Coach Lessig, played under a tremendous strain in every gameg but the effect didn't tell until West Chester whipped the Tro- jans in a heartbreaking 1-0 game. After that defeat every score was a winning one, and the Ches-Mont cham- pionship was captured once more. hinfisi x s lIii1'oRD l'tb'l l'S'I'I,WN OPPONENTS Il ..... .. Central Bucks H 12 .. .. Forty-five girls reported for the first tryouts, twenty-two of them remaining the full season. Besides hard hitting and accurate fielding, base sliding was stressed. More than one fem- inine leg was bruised as a result of arriving at the base on the ground. Under the coaching of Mrs. Margaret Reitnour, the team had a successful season.
