H flee f is Subs Autumn uyhery zu Two weeks before school began, candidates for the l93S Trojan football squad turned out en masse for ball practice. .Xmong the many Sopho- mores, hluniors, and Seniors who reported were fifteen letter men, three of whom, Jim Monk, lfred justice, and Clyde Redding, have had two K jug Football and hardest driving in the history of the school. The Trojans continued their hue play to defeat Cincinnati lilder 3-l to O. Un September SO, the Trojans traveled to Springfield and kept their record in- tact by defeating the XYildcats 26 to 6. years of varsity play. Coaches jenkins, Ramey, and lfllscsser put the boys through strenuous ex- ercises, drills on the fundamentals of football, and scrimmages, often under a boiling sun, to whip them into shape for their opening game. and coaches also held regular skull practices in order to fix each players tasks more firmly in his mind. Co-captains Fred Justice and Clyde Redding led their teammates to a hard-earned victory over .Xkron by a score of 12 to 71 the starting team turned out to be one of the heaviest The Reserves, under Coach Charles Lorentz, have had an equally successful month. The twenty-two players who composed the reserve team gave an excellent account of themselves in their two September games. They defeated the Raceland tirst squad ll to 6, and the lilaekfork varsity 26 to 6. Coach Fred Multer and his freshman were not so fortunate, however. They played the Central Catholic Reserves and the Sciotoville Reserves, but both games ended in ties, O to 0.

Y..-X. boys can be seen working on the stage settings for the pageant. These boys are also aiding in the construction ot' the huge tort which is being erected on the lfspla- nade. Members of the faculty who have l given much time and energy to the Am'z'czpafz'0n, festive 5pz'rz'z' are prevalent September closes with an uproar: in the high school. studying becomes an impossibility in an- ticipation of The Northwest Territory Celebra- tion. The Retail Merchants .Xssociation is con- ducting a voting contest to choose two queens to otticiate at numerous events during the sesquicen- tennial celebration. There is keen competition among several girls in the high school for the honor. The two queens are to receive as prizes, free trips to the New York XYorld's Fair in l939. The merchants in the business district are work- ing diligently to have their window displays ready for unveiling October 3. Many store win- dows are already crowded with articles of cloth- ing, documents, and dishes that were brought here hy the First settlers. These relics have been collected from families all over Scioto County. Many students are being called out ot classes to be measured by Mr. l.each to see if they can till the requirements necessary tor a part in the historical pageant, Our Heritage. Mr. Bert l.each, a prominent member of the faculty, spent many months in composing the pageant which is to be presented by all the city and parochial schools of Portsmouth, New Boston, Scioto County. .Xnnouncements are continually being 1nade over the speaking system stating that preparation for the celebration are Mr. jesse Xtagus, Mr. lired Muller. Miss Octavia Shinkle, Miss Dorothy Shultz, Miss Cleo Resler, Mr. Henri Schnabl. Miss Katharine Kauffman, Miss Marion Cialton, Mr. Donald Stewart. Mr. XYillard lillsesser. Mr. ,lames Corwin, and Miss Ruth Burton, Miss Charlotte liell is working continu- ously with her gym classes preparing several unique programs to be presented at the pageant. Miss lilizabeth Moore wrote the Song ot Ports- mouth , and Mr. Bert Leach wrote the lyrics. The highlight of the entire celebration will undoubtedly be the arrival of the Twentieth Century Pioneers . They are mostly young col- lege students who are traveling the same trails as did the early pioneers in settling the Northwest territory. Their long trek started from Massa- chusetts. continuing through New York and I'ennsylvania and down the Ohio River to Mari- etta. The caravan will go through l'ortsniouth on the return trip from Illinois. Many students are preparing to drive out of town to meet the caravan and escort the pioneers into the city. The members ot the caravan will lead a huge parade through the streets of the town, and present their pageant oi the settling of the North- west Territory.
