V ' Knvich adds slx more to I-lerlong's misery. The largest turnout of football players in the history of Portola High School heralded the start of the 1958 season. Of the fifty-five boys, twenty-three were selected for the varsity team, where hard work.and determination became the key to success. The outlook for the season was questionable as we felt we were strong in some aspects of the game and weak in others. Every effort was made to round the team into a strong unit, but the ilrst part of the season found us without a scoring punch, as only 13 points were scored in the first three games and many opportunities were missed. The addition of a few new plays and more hard work enabled us to cross the important goal line enough times to down all our conference foes and to bring home the title. . It was a pleasure for me to work with this group of boys as the spirit and desire of the team were outstanding. The high points of the season for me were our victories over Chester and Greenville while the low point was the one point loss to the out- played Quincy Trojans.
