Terracin will long be remembered as a quiet, sincere, warm person. One of our two busy assist- ant principals of the past year, we were sorry to see him go. His duties included scheduling, making reports, pro- gram evaluation, and student counseling, but his door was always open to his students. Mr. Terracin is now attending an Administrative Seminar in Washington, D.C. The students of Portland High School wish him the very best of luck. Mr. David R. Wallace Mr. David R. Wallace came to Portland High School in February of 1965, as a member of the history depart- ment. His qualifications and outstanding performance dur- ing his first few years led him to the chairmanship of his department in September of 1970. As head of the history department, Mr. Wallace not only ran an excellent history program, but his dedication to the school was reflected in his involvement with the activities and the students. ln June of 1973, Mr. Wallace accepted the position of assistant principal at Lincoln Junior High School. The fac- ulty and students greatly miss this man. Appreciation Mr. Sarando P. Giftos Mr. Sarando P. Giftos came to Portland High School in 1947 as the chairman of the Business Department. He has been the head of the department since he began teaching at this school, and has taught longer than any other department head. For 25 years he taught in the main building, and then was transferred to the PRVTC building. He attended Boston University and graduated with a B.S. and Master's in Education degrees. He enioys work- ing with his students and is leaving with hopes and ambi- tions. He is a practicing public accountant, and will further his work in that field. Mr. Glen jordan Mr. Glen Jordan, who has been substituting at P.H.S. since the middle of last year, is leaving. Along with being an excellent teacher, he is the minister of the First Advent Church on Park Avenue. He enjoys teaching, but feels that the ministry is his first calling. Mr. Jordan's friendly personality and infectious smile always made the days delightful. With his outgoing per- 5on0llfY, he was pegged not only as a good teacher, but a friend to many of us. The staff of 1974, with love and appreciation, fondly dedicates this edition of the TOTEM to HOME and all that the word connotes. No words of ours can express the thoughts of home as beautifully as our famous poet, Henry W. Longfellow. We quote from the first stanza of Mr. Longfellow's poem MY LOST YOUTH. Often I think of the beautiful town That is seated by the sea, Often in thought go up and down The pleasant streets of that dear old town, And my youth comes back to me. And a verse of a Lapland song, ls haunting my memory still: A boy's will is the wind's will, And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts. , , ss. V K -s . as ,pf Q, i? :, J, -f', , f? W Longfellow FACULTY For two years now, Portland High School has been under the leadership ofa stern but fair man. Having come here five years ago as a disciplinarian, Mr. Hansen advanced first to assistant principal, and then to his present position. Sllllll Mr. C. W. Hansen He is respected by all the students and faculty and in turn respects them. He has done much for our hallowed halls, and will continue to do so. Underclassmen will come to know and admire him as the seniors do. We wish him much success in the future. PRINCIPAL Mr. Richard L. Whitmore Mr. Richard L. Whitmore, a graduate of Portland High School, is one of our busy assistant principals. The leaving of Mr. Terracin, last year, has altered his duties. He is now working with the seniors instead of the underclassmen, and is responsible for scheduling the students and working with the different depart- ments of the school. He spent two years in the service, graduated from the University of Maine in Orono, and holds a Master's degree in Administration. We appreciate the time and effort Mr. Whitmore has spent for our benefit. A5515 TA TPRINCIPAL5 Dr. Marshall Rosensweet L, Dr. Marshall Rosensweet, another of our assistant prin- 4 cipals, came to Portland High School from Dayton, Ohio, where he has held many and varied positions. Well qualified for this administrative position, Dr. Rosensweet holds a B.A. in education, an M.A. and a Ph.D. in educational administration. He is dedicated to his work and has a genuine interest in the school and its activities. We welcome Dr. Rosen- sweet and wish him much further success. ,,- OFFICE SECRETARIES: Miss Da fr- 1 1, iw lene Merrill Mrs Mary DiBiase Mrs Barbara Frisbie SECRETARIES Mr. Whiimore's secreicryy Mrs. Helen Higgins. This year, the Language Department, with chairman Ms. Theresa Johnson, has been making plans for a for- eign newspaper. lt will include stories written in German, Spanish, French, and Latin. Many students have shown interest in this paper, thinking it a worthwhile proiect. The department has always had a number of fun trips to Spain and France. The students of Portland High School again look forward to these trios. MATH DEPARTMENT: SEATED, L to R - D. Murphy, R. Allen, L. Gordius, R. Graff. STANDING - F. James, E. Coates, J. Pope, T. The Bulldogs earned their salt by beating team after team. This achievement can be attributed to the skill and determination of the players. Led by the sharpshooter, Jon Tomshick, the Forward, Danny Wohl, and Ace Jumpers, Daryl Mcllwain and Ed Redmond, the Bulldogs controlled nearly all aspects of every game. Mark O'Brion assumed the role of Floor General. Showing their true grit the Bulldogs battled back from a 9 point deficit in the South Portland game to overthrow the Riots. The Key Club Store and the Key Club Group, Fa-Da-Da, were formed early in the year. The group, composed of five throwbacks to the early sixties, was the maior attraciton at the Turkey Day Rally, the Sophomore Recep- tion, and the Keyette Record Hop. All considered, it must be said that the Key Club had a very successful year. Comm unity Successfully aw ff - J I r V ,...-' . - e e '- ' 51 ' 1.2. 5-Qi EA rf A 4 R bf 114 K ,- . Up the Down Staircase A Success Mrs. Sandra Guerra has done a tremendous job this year with the newly-revived Dramatics Club. The season's first perform- ance was received by all as one of the best productions ever performed in Portland High School. The play, UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE, involved over thirty actors and in spite of the many problems they ran into during production, the final results showed that the PHS Dramatics Club will do even bigger and better things in the future. Here we see Mrs. Guerra in one of her typical calamities, for example: When I said 'break a leg', I didn't mean it literally! ', Band and Majorettes Back School Spirit Bang ihe drum slowly! The Editorial Staff Eddie, you know you're not supposed to have food above the first floor. The Senior Section Editors were a well organized group this year. Accumulating the Senior pictures, organizing, and typing out activities proved to be a simple task for these devoted workers. As usual, the impending deadline was everpresent in their minds, but surmounting the many problems which arose, they managed to get it in on time.
