Killah Zin Qctiun Three short, crisp words telling little, meaning much. Not a great deal of space needed to put them in print, just enough space for a man's life. Not much to say. For those who waited in vain for his return there are no words to describe the pain, the suffering, the twisted blackness of Hell on From his station in eternity he turns to gaze upon the ones he loved, the thing he held close to his heart, out there. He looks with eyes that hold a glimmer of hope, a world of peace . . . Hope that we, the living, may build a world where no wars reach out to rob, destroy, sadden. Peace is his now, far better than the earthly peace for which he fought and died. With one last lingering look at those he leaves behind forever, he turns and he is gone. ROBERT HARTFORD Earth

Zvrewvrd Often the yardstick of one's personality is his ability to overcome reverses, relying upon his own ingenuity to pull him over the rough spots. Ir was a very rough spot, taking shape in the form of ma- terial shortages, which confronted the publication of this, our 1945 Totem. Yes, we had hopes plus talent, but we lacked sufficient materials-paper, plates, and film. It was the task of the editor and staff to overcome these obstacles and, as in other more plentiful times, to picture the year of events and achievements in a substan- tially efhcient manner. We accepted the challenge. Making good use of the unbeatable and undiminishable Yankee ingenuity, we con- trived to present a picture of a youth that has learned a few lessons in self-reliance and patience. We think of this Totem of 1945 as a symbol of how Portland High School can carry on in spite of any obstacle.
